Going with the flow A major refurbishement has transformed Netherton House into a sleek living space. By Elizabeth McMeekin
2006
IF a kitchen is the heart of a home, then Netherton House, in the village of Blanefield, has a lot of love to give. This nineteenth- century property boasts a beautiful modern kitchencum-dining area which epitomises elegant, modern living. After a lot of thinking and plenty of building work, [Sarah Bridge] totally transformed this property into a clean and modern living space. But instead of taking a hammer to the whole building, she insisted that the original features of the house be retained. \"It was really important to me that we kept details like the wood panelling and the fireplaces, \" says Sarah. \"There were a couple of things like the range cooker that we were past saving, but otherwise we kept everything we could.\" The kitchen and living area are truly outstanding. Sarah decided to knock a wall down in order to create one large social space that can be used for throwing parties or simply having friends around for dinner. A sleek white kitchen with wooden work surfaces is complimented by integrated appliances, and there is also a large breakfast bar that doubles up as an extra seating area.

SARAH BRIDGES NELSON MARCH 5, 1944-NOV. 27, 2010
2010
[Sarah Bridges Nelson] was a strong believer in education and in helping others. Her mother told her (and her grandchildren) that \"education is the one thing that nobody can't take away from you.\" Sarah used this wisdom to earn her bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and her master's degree in Guidance Counseling from Duquesne University. Always having interest in the development of children, Sarah served for 26 years in the Pittsburgh Public School System as an elementary school teacher and guidance counselor. During her career, Sarah worked at many schools, including East Hills, Sunnyside, Martin Luther King, and Dilworth. She cared deeply for her students and worked conscientiously for their benefit, often worrying over them well beyond the school day and even the school year.
