aqua viva - How the Earth Works Part 7: In the swim for life
by
Briscoe, David
in
Briscoe, David
2003
The early Earth was rich in energy. Volcanoes gushed through the restless crust, radioactive elements decayed, thousand-year long lightning storms raged as the atmosphere cooled and ultraviolet light from the young sun seared Earth's surface through the clearing skies. These intense sources of energy combined atmospheric gases to make the `building-blocks' for life - amino acids, sugars and so on. As rains condensed water vapour to liquid, organic molecules accumulated in the first oceans. When humans first walked on the moon, we thought the ocean depths were fairly devoid of life, with a few creatures waiting for food to fall from above and some weird glowing fish. Subsequent exploration has proved how wrong we were. Hydrothermal vents are cracks in the ocean floor, where water penetrates the Earth's crust and then gushes back up, rich in minerals. Around these vents exist complex ecosystems that are entirely independent of sunlight. Bacteria harness energy from the minerals. These microbes provide food for huge tubeworms, giant clams, crabs and fish.

Arnold) Schwarzenegger established that it would go up only temporarily until July 1.\" \"That's the good news - it did go down,\" Botello said. \"Of course the notices are reaching people almost on the day, or after the day, their renewal is due.\" \"A lot of people are not reading those green inserts,\" he said. \"Basically we're just telling people don't throw away that insert - read it.\"

Forget what you know about physical therapy
2008
She's one of the first patients to use the Wii as part of her therapy. Adding the game system to the clinic's repertoire of equipment was the brainchild of David Briscoe, the physical therapist who owns MedCare, and he's dubbed it \"Wii-Hab.\" Nintendo's latest innovation, the Wii Fit, also fits perfectly into Briscoe's therapy. This unit includes a pad on which players stand and then move to pre-selected exercise programs such as yoga, running, balance and so on, and it's what [Valerie McGill] has been using for her therapy. \"He's not always nice,\" McGill noted. Next, Briscoe led her through the soccer game, where she had to balance on the pad and move her head to try to hit the soccer balls flying at her on the TV screen ahead.
