Zsigmond Kemény wrote his pamphlet Forradalom után („After the Revolution”) a year after the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-1849. In his work he analyses the years of the Revolution and the political events of the 25 years preceding it. According to his perspective, the Revolution had led to a national catastrophe that may render the future of the Hungarian nation as uncertain. The aim of this essay is to investigate the means by which Kemény seeks to re-interpret the political events and leaders of the time between 1825 and 1849 in order to restore the Hungarians’ historical continuity, broken by the Revolution. In the analysis I shall examine the semantic layers of the notion ‘revolution’ used in the pamphlet, Kemény’s collective views of the future and his opinion of Lajos Kossuth.
DIVERSITY, EQUITY INCLUSIVITY AND BELONGING IN ONCOLOGY NURSING PRACTICE: CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION
Significance & Background: Diversity, equity, inclusivity and belonging (DEIB) is key to providing quality care. To be effective, it needs to be woven into all areas of nursing practice which means full engagement by staff and leadership. In 2022, we began work in our ambulatory clinic to improve our nursing practice with respect to DEIB. Through regular education sessions, we created a path for change by fostering active conversations versations and setting expectations regarding DEIB and its relevance in current nursing practice. Creating engagement of staff in the DEIB conversation has been an obstacle frequently discussed, as our journey continues, we set out to find answers to what motivates staff. Purpose: We sought to find different ways to actively engage our staff in DEIB projects and to start thinking about nursing practice in a more inclusive manner. Interventions: We created a DEIB-based survey to discern what the staff wanted to learn consisting of five questions. A post-intervention survey of three questions was also given. The surveys enquired what DEIB topic or community they wished to learn about and if they felt they had the knowledge, tools and resources to give appropriate care to this community. The post intervention survey focused of perceived efficacy. Results: We learned this team had a high population of patients who identified as either Hispanic or Latinx and many were Spanish speaking only. The staff requested education and identified specific tools they needed to give equitable care. A second virtual translator device was obtained to account for the high population of Spanish speaking patients. Patient education and literature were translated into Spanish. They also noticed their patient brochures were filled with Caucasian patients only. They escalated this concern by requesting new brochures that directly reflected the diverse communities we serve. The post intervention survey showed that the staff felt that they were more aware of disparities facing Hispanic and Latinx patients. Discussion: Having the staff decide which topics are most relevant to them results in their becoming actively involved in the changes they want to see. This engagement changed how they thought about inclusivity and belonging from the patient's perspective, and they continue to include DEIB strategies in their practice. By continuing the conversation as part of regular practice and with active engagement we are now in the work of meaningful
