Search continues for illuminating answer on Naval Academy Bridge Editor's Desk
by
Hutzell, Rick
in
Buck, David
2017
We've been reporting on this mystery since 2011: Lights on, lights dim, lights out. You can't drive across this scenic entrance to Annapolis without wondering what is causing it. Not everyone was happy. Bob Bruninga, a senior research engineer at the academy, criticized the results at the time as a \"light bomb\" that endangered motorists and messed up the view from the Yard's Clark Telescope. \"You're not working apples-to-apples anymore, it's one technology versus something that was a little different,\" he said.

The new LED lights will be installed at Route 50 interchanges, including those with Route 424, Interstate 97, Aris T. Allen Boulevard and Riva Road, Jennifer Road, southbound Route 2 and Rowe Boulevard. The project is a \"major investment\" and it doesn't make sense for the SHA to repair a handful of broken lights when they'll eventually have to be taken out for the LED installations, [David Buck] said. \"We recognize (Route 50) was an area that needed to see upgrades,\" he said. \"We want folks to know that we're working.\"

Blevins, Jason

Buck, David
2002
The lodge and its snowcat skiing operation has been marketed privately since last fall and is listing for $3.95 million. [David Buck] said the property, which includes 90 acres surrounding the cedar- log lodge, was appraised at $4.56 million. Irwin has changed hands several times since 1976, when a Texas oil baron built his dream ski home in a lush valley beneath the Ruby and Anthracite mountain ranges surrounding Lake Irwin and a former mining town. The Irwin Ten acquired the lodge in 1997 after it had been shuttered for a year. The lodge's previous owners were forced to sell when federal watchdogs discovered sewage treatment and storage violations.

The SHA's e-Road Ready brochure highlights more than 130 work zones leading to \"active lane closures\" that will be popping up across the state. \"E-Road Ready is our way of helping motorists be prepared for the work zones popping up all around the state in the next couple of weeks,\" [Sandra Dobson] said. \"It's a guide to keeping you prepared and safe on the road.\"

Front: Class divide in health is widening, thinktank warns
by
Campbell, Denis
in
Buck, David
2012
The findings have cast doubt on the prospect of the health secretary, Andrew Lansley, fulfilling his pledge to \"improve the health of the poorest fastest\" in order to reduce glaring health inequalities. England's richest citizens live seven years longer on average. The report also reopens the debate over how to encourage poorer people to adopt healthier habits. Those from poorer backgrounds or with less education are more likely than others to develop long-term conditions such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease earlier and to experience them more severely, [David Buck] said. \"As well as this being a public health problem, this does also store up problems for the NHS in future, as people with these conditions will be a drain on the NHS at a time when its resources are going to be very constrained,\" he explained. The authors found that the better off someone is, the more likely they are to have begun living a healthier life during 2003-08. \"The [widening] inequality gap is due to the improvement in those at the top, and, to a lesser degree, those in the middle, not because those at the bottom have got worse per se. They're stuck in a rut,\" Buck said.
