Charlie and the great glass elevator
Inside the Great Glass Elevator, Willy Wonka, Charlie Bucket and his family are cruising a thousand feet above the chocolate factory. They can see the whole world below them, but they're not alone. The American Space Hotel has just launched. Lurking inside are the Vernicious Knids - the most brutal, vindictive murderous beasts in the universe. So grab your gizzard! Hold your hats! Only Charlie and Willy Wonka can stop the Knids from destroying everything!
Analysis on the “Douyin (Tiktok) Mania” Phenomenon Based on Recommendation Algorithms
As one of the most popular short video platform, Douyin has accumulated more than half of the Chinese netizens as its daily active users. Many users spend plenty of time viewing Douyin short videos, which make Douyin addiction become a widespread phenomenon. In this paper, the author analyzes algorithm principles used in Douyin. Combining both perspectives of mass media communication and algorithm technology to explain how it effects Douyin addiction. For one thing, the recommendation algorithm caters users by fully meeting their needs. Using the hierarchical interest label tree, the user persona and the partitioned data buckets strategy to recommend more accurate and personalized contents. For another, the algorithm uses the collaborative filtering algorithm and low-cost interaction design mechanism to make traps for users. The author also finds that there is a closed-loop relationship between Douyin addiction and algorithm optimization. The algorithm principles positively effects users’ continuance intention. Meanwhile, the more frequent the user uses Douyin, the more accurate the algorithm will be. If not intervened, the addiction may be severely exacerbated. So, the author comes up with a few suggestions for Douyin developers and users, trying to break the closed-loop.
Experimental Investigation on Effect of Hoop Thickness on Performance of Hooped Pelton Wheel
A recent improvement in Pelton runner design, the hooped runner, is based on a redistribution of behaviour among the buckets and hoops and which allows stresses to be minimized and efficiency is nearly equivalent to conventional Pelton Runner apart from low nozzle opening of 40% and 60%. This advanced design having a couple of superiority from the mechanical orientation as well as from the assembly point of view without any different difficulty from the hydraulic orientation that establishes the significance of this unique concept. In the present work, an actual laboratory-scale hooped Pelton runner is developed. The thickness of its hoop is varied as 2 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm and to prove the competence of this advanced design and the influence of hoop thickness on the hydraulic performance of the Pelton wheel, detailed experimental studies have been performed. From the results it has been concluded that the power output and efficiency of hooped Pelton runner are nearly the same as the conventional Pelton runner at all nozzle opening.
Charlie and the great glass elevator
Taking up where Charlie and the Chocolate Factory leaves off, Charlie, his family, and Mr. Wonka find themselves launched into space in the great glass elevator.
Seismic Fragility Analysis of Offshore Wind Turbines Considering Site-Specific Ground Responses
This study investigated the seismic performance and assessed the seismic fragility of an existing pentapod suction-bucket-supported offshore wind turbine, focusing on the amplification of earthquake ground motions. A simplified suction bucket–soil interaction model with nonlinear spring elements was employed within a finite element framework, linking the suction bucket and soil to hypothetical points on the OWT structures at the mudline. Unlike conventional approaches using bedrock earthquake records, this study utilized free-field surface motions as input, derived from bedrock ground motions through one-dimensional wave theory propagation to estimate soil-layer-induced amplification effects. The validity of the simplified model was confirmed, enabling effective assessment of seismic vulnerability through fragility curves. These curves revealed that the amplification effect increases the vulnerability of the OWT system, raising the probability of exceeding damage limit states such as horizontal displacement of the tower top, tower stress, and horizontal displacement at the mudline during small to moderate earthquakes, while decreasing this likelihood during strong earthquakes. Comparisons between the Full Model and the simplified Spring Model reveal that the simplified model reduces computational time by approximately 75%, with similar seismic response accuracy, making it a valuable tool for rapid seismic assessments. This research contributes to enhancing seismic design practices for suction-bucket-supported offshore wind turbines by employing a minimalist finite element model approach.
Charlie and the chocolate factory
Each of five children lucky enough to discover an entry ticket into Mr. Willy Wonka's mysterious chocolate factory takes advantage of the situation in his own way.
Ultimate Limit State Scour Risk Assessment of a Pentapod Suction Bucket Support Structure for Offshore Wind Turbine
Scour risk assessment considering reaction force at foundation was proposed and applied to newly developed pentapod suction bucket support structures for a 5.5 MW offshore wind turbine under ultimate limit state environmental load. Scour hazard was obtained according to scour depth by using an empirical formula, which is the function of marine environmental conditions such as significant wave height, significant period, and current velocity. Fragility of the pentapod support structure was evaluated using the bearing capacity limit state criterion under ultimate limit state load case. Scour risk was assessed by combining the scour hazard and the fragility. Finally, scour risk of the developed pentapod suction bucket support structure under ultimate limit state has been assessed.
