Thermal Imaging for Detection of Defects in Envelopes of Buildings in Use: Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Building Energy Performance

The proposed interdisciplinary method of identifying defects in the building envelope insulation enables the user to quickly assess the scale of heat loss problems in occupied buildings. The method rests upon the quantitative analysis of macroscopic infrared images of the buildings. The method was applied in practice to assess effects of thermal upgrade project in Dźbów housing estate in Częstochowa, a city located in southern Poland. The results confirmed the applicability of the method to monitoring energy performance of buildings in use without intervention into the building’s fabric and without disturbing the occupants.

Toward Reproducible Computational Research: An Empirical Analysis of Data and Code Policy Adoption by Journals

Journal policy on research data and code availability is an important part of the ongoing shift toward publishing reproducible computational science. This article extends the literature by studying journal data sharing policies by year (for both 2011 and 2012) for a referent set of 170 journals. We make a further contribution by evaluating code sharing policies, supplemental materials policies, and open access status for these 170 journals for each of 2011 and 2012. We build a predictive model of open data and code policy adoption as a function of impact factor and publisher and find higher impact journals more likely to have open data and code policies and scientific societies more likely to have open data and code policies than commercial publishers. We also find open data policies tend to lead open code policies, and we find no relationship between open data and code policies and either supplemental material policies or open access journal status. Of the journals in this study, 38% had a data policy, 22% had a code policy, and 66% had a supplemental materials policy as of June 2012. This reflects a striking one year increase of 16% in the number of data policies, a 30% increase in code policies, and a 7% increase in the number of supplemental materials policies. We introduce a new dataset to the community that categorizes data and code sharing, supplemental materials, and open access policies in 2011 and 2012 for these 170 journals.

Soil health pilot study in England: Outcomes from an on-farm earthworm survey

Earthworms are primary candidates for national soil health monitoring as they are ecosystem engineers that benefit both food production and ecosystem services associated with soil security. Supporting farmers to monitor soil health could help to achieve the policy aspiration of sustainable soils by 2030 in England; however, little is known about how to overcome participation barriers, appropriate methodologies (practical, cost-effective, usefulness) or training needs. This paper presents the results from a pilot #60minworms study which mobilised farmers to assess over >1300 ha farmland soils in spring 2018. The results interpretation framework is based on the presence of earthworms from each of the three ecological groups at each observation (20 x 20 cm x 20 cm pit) and spatially across a field (10 soil pits). Results showed that most fields have basic earthworm presence and abundance, but 42% fields may be over-worked as indicated by absence/rarity of epigeic and/or anecic earthworms. Tillage had a negative impact (p < 0.05) on earthworm populations and organic matter management did not mitigate tillage impacts. In terms of farmer participation, Twitter and Farmers Weekly magazine were highly effective channels for recruitment. Direct feedback from participants included excellent scores in trust, value and satisfaction of the protocol (e.g. 100% would do the test again) and 57% would use their worm survey results to change their soil management practices. A key training need in terms of earthworm identification skills was reported. The trade-off between data quality, participation rates and fieldwork costs suggests there is potential to streamline the protocol further to #30minworms (5 pits), incurring farmer fieldwork costs of approximately £1.48 ha-1. At national scales, £14 million pounds across 4.7 M ha-1 in fieldwork costs per survey could be saved by farmer participation.

Building Family Capacity: supporting multiple family members to implement aided Language modeling
Family-centered capacity-building practices have been shown to benefit children and families. However, limited research explores these practices for children who use augmentative and alternative communication. This study explored an intervention to teach family members to implement an Aided Language Modeling (ALM) strategy across natural activities at home. A single case multiple probe design was used to evaluate the intervention with five family members and a girl with autism. Results showed the intervention increased family members’ percentage of high-fidelity ALM strategy use and rate of ALM. Descriptively, a modest increase was also observed in the proportion of the child’s communication using the speech-generating device. Social validity interviews suggested the goals, procedures, and outcomes were socially valid and supported family capacity building.

Technology acceptance in private spaces has not received much attention, although users' behaviour may be different due to the space in which usage takes place. To address this gap, the present study proposed a model exploring individuals' values, users' perception of technology performance and attitudinal beliefs in relation to use behaviour and satisfaction when using smart technologies in their homes. The study employed a sample of 422 participants in the USA. Structural equation modelling was utilised to test the proposed hypotheses. The model provided robust results explaining factors underpinning the use of pervasive technology in private settings. Specifically, the study showed that hedonic and utilitarian beliefs are critical for the perception of task fit, whereas privacy and financial factors were found to be not significant. The fit between tasks and technology demonstrated a significant role in predicting perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, use behaviour, and satisfaction. Lastly, use behaviour showed a positive correlation with satisfaction.

PurposeThe aim is to reveal contemporary research trends and patterns in Internet of Things (IoTs) so that social scientists who are new to the discipline may be steered towards rightful directions when examining this phenomenon.Design/methodology/approachA total of 169 IoT articles indexed in the Web of Science database were analyzed via bibliometric analysis and content analysis. The VOSViewer software was used to identify popular keywords of the IoT topics, its publication productivity, the most relevant journals, and the most prolific authors within. Content analysis was conducted manually to determine the most popular research methods used, the most frequently studied contexts, the most popular IoT application areas, the most highly examined user perspectives, and the most often employed theories.FindingsThe synthesis of both the bibliometric and content analysis results suggest the necessity of investigating the post-adoption technology usage behavior of IoT technology in developing countries, particularly in smart home. This is especially so from new landscapes using other theories or models, apart from the overwhelmed Technology Adoption Model (TAM) and its variants.Originality/valueWith a focus on addressing the state-of-the-art of IoT in social science, and to synthesize its future research directions systematically, this study was conducted with both bibliometric and content analysis, in order to enhance the overall analysis for higher accuracy and more reliable results.
