The future starts here
\"For these kids,\" says Darrel Woodley, Ontario Hockey League's director of central scouting, \"this is the Stanley Cup.\" \"We're looking at skills and skating and trying to find out as much about character as we possibly can,\" says Hamilton Bulldogs coach George Burnett. \"Who can play the game without the puck and hockey sense - those are all critical things for our program.\" \"I've seen lots of games, but the staff has worked all year long,\" he says of Hamilton's half-a-dozen-or-so area scouts. \"It's nice to be able to ask our guys questions - why don't they like a particular individual or why do they like a particular individual - and see them in a tournament situation at a critical time of the year.\"
Dogs battle to win in North Bay
\"I'm hopeful it's exactly what we need, a team that competes as hard as they do,\" he said before Wednesday's game against North Bay. \"We have to turn up our compete level or it will be a result like last weekend.\" Connor Walters scored 34 seconds into overtime to push [George Burnett]'s Bulldogs past the host Battalion 4-3. The comeback win ended a two-game skid and gave the club sole possession of the final Ontario Hockey League playoff spot.
Momentum shot down by Spitfires
[George Burnett] said one positive take-away was the performance of goalie Kaden Fulcher, who stopped 35 shots Sunday to Mario Culina's 14. Hamilton native Cristiano DiGiacinto was the first to beat him, evening the score three-quarters of the way through the opening period with his first goal in 18 games. After that, it was Bradley Latour, Hayden McCool and Logan Brown with singles and Christian Fischer with a pair. Niki Petti and Jack Hidi scored for Hamilton. Over the course of two games, the Bulldogs took unnecessary penalties. They allowed untimely goals and lacked leadership from their veteran players. They were outshot and outmuscled, and they didn't come close to matching the Spitfires' compete level - which is simply to say Windsor wanted it more.
Bulldogs, Generals in race to the wire
\"It's human nature to look at the team you're battling with and see their results,\" said head coach George Burnett. \"But I think the team that seizes the opportunity and takes care of its own business probably has the best chance of playing in the post-season.\" \"Obviously we have an eye on Oshawa,\" the captain admitted. \"Still it's very important these remaining games that we're worried about the Hamilton Bulldogs and no one else.\" \"We certainly know what's ahead of us, we know who we're playing and we have a pretty good idea of what their schedule looks like as well,\" said Burnett. \"It's still a game at a time, though. That's how we've got to look at it.\"
No bark as Bulldogs drop sixth straight
\"We didn't check much, we turned some pucks over and, I think, when you don't move your feet, you're susceptible to mistakes,\" said head coach George Burnett. \"It's definitely not what you want in your first game,\" said the six-foot-three, 187-pounder who came to Hamilton from Sarnia in the [Charlie Graham] swap. \"It's just - it was just a tough one.\" \"D-zone coverage and responsible, accountable play,\" he added. \"That's where we've got to start.\"
Bulldogs put losses aside
\"Erie is a good hockey club. We didn't get blown out of the water and I thought that at times we played with them,\" said [Niki Petti], who was back in the lineup after missing two games and several practices last week with the flu. \"Obviously, losing isn't what we wanted to do, but against a club like that I think you've got to take the positives and build on those.\" Notes:Steve Staios ushered in the new year in Edmonton. The Bulldogs president and former Oiler was recognized at a game Dec. 31 as part of the team's season-long farewell to Rexall Place. Edmonton is moving to a new downtown rink, Rogers Place, this fall ... The Bulldogs were back in blue Sunday. The club will sport its coloured jerseys - either red or their freshly debuted royal blue - at home games for the rest of the season ... Defenceman Jack Hanley didn't dress against Erie Sunday after blocking a shot against the Otters Saturday night. [George Burnett] didn't know the extent of the injury, saying it would be assessed further Monday ... Justin Lemcke is back on two feet. The Bulldogs' captain was spotted walking without crutches for the first time in three months Sunday, and said he hopes to be skating in as little as two weeks. Lemcke has been out of the lineup since Oct. 4, when he fractured his fibula in a game against Sault Ste. Marie.
Stoney Creek's Webb ready to return
\"I've been taking some contact in practice for a week, so that's probably the best thing for it,\" said the 16-year-old defenceman. \"But practice isn't really like a game.\" \"I think he can go out there and skate hard and stop and start and feel all the pain and the burn to get back to where he's at,\" he added. \"But ultimately that's not getting into a game against a guy who wants to run you over or go by you. So I think that's the challenge - to create some situations at practice for him that are competitive.\" \"He thinks he knows and we think we know where he's at right now, but until he gets in a game against someone who really doesn't like him, we don't know,\" [George Burnett] noted. \"So, we'll evaluate that on this road trip or over this week and kind of see where he's at and go from there.\"
