Distinguished journalist, UF grad Burt dies at 81
In many ways, [Al Burt] \"became the voice of Florida\" through those columns, said the Herald's current executive editor, Anders Gyllenhaal, who described Burt as a \"magnificent writer\" and, more important, a \"dedicated reporter.\" In 2002, UF's College of Journalism and Communications included Burt among its \"alumni of distinction.\" He also is in the Alligator Hall of Fame. Burt wrote several books, including \"Florida: A Place in the Sun\" (1974), \"Becalmed in the Mullet Latitudes\" (1984), \"Al Burt's Florida\" (1997), and \"The Tropic of Cracker\" (1999).

Bob's back at UF
in
Burt, Al
,
Graham, Bob
2008
\"He handed out cards,\" Burt recalled. \"On one side he listed his name and candidacy. On the other he declared, 'I hate politics.' \" Later, when the young man ran for chancellor of the Honor Court, Burt said, he put up campaign posters depicting, not his own \"fresh-faced\" image, but rather that of \"a bearded old man: Abraham Lincoln.\" It is entirely appropriate that [Bob Graham] would return to UF in an educator's role. I don't recall ever hearing Graham referred to as \"the people's governor,\" although he has registered Cristlike popularity ratings in his career. But Al Burt once dubbed him \"the teacher-politician.\" He's been tagged \"pedantic,\" \"professorial,\" \"eggheadish,\" \"dweebish\" and that most feared of all (for politicians at least) superlative, \"intellectual.\"

Get rid of the Rodman
in
Burt, Al
,
Crider, Dale
2005
[Al Burt]'s talk reminded us why we love this part of Florida so much, whether it be hiking along a 200-feet-high bluff above the Apalachicola River, kayaking through an ancient seascape on the black waters of the Suwannee River, or swimming in one of the crystal-clear springs that feed the Ichetucknee River. Al could remember what the Ocklawaha was like before the Rodman Dam was built in 1968 as part of the ill-advised Cross Florida Barge Canal. The reservoir it created is now a shallow, weed-choked, stump-infested impoundment. To quote Al Burt, it's time to remove the Rodman Dam, \"the Dam shame.\"

PSAL A BOYS PLAYOFFS Brandeis Gives Sneak Preview
1993
\"Brandeis just forces you to play that way, there's nothing you can really do about it,\" lamented Lafayette coach Ira Levine. For three quarters, however, the Frenchies did a great job of keeping their poise and remaining within striking distance despite a subpar performance from center Kareem Sims (6 points), who didn't score his first basket until 4:31 was left in the game. After an 8-0 spurt in the first 2:47 of the second quarter, gave Brandeis a 21-14 lead, Sadrach Santiago (15 points) nailed a three-pointer and sophomore Peter Mauro hit a jumper to trim the lead to 25-21. The half ended with Brandeis ahead, 27-22. [Corey Wright] sank five of six from the line and [Al Burt] had 13 points in the fourth quarter as Brandeis finally was able to give itself a little breathing room.

Brandeis Turns Back Manhattan Center
1993
Al Burt is back, and the Brandeis Braves are badder than ever. The 6-3 forward, hindered for most of the season by a fractured right wrist, excelled yesterday. Although he did not start, Burt scored a team-high 26 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and handed out 5 assists in 30 minutes as defending champion Brandeis stuffed Manhattan A division rival Manhattan Center, 83-71, in a rematch of last season's PSAL boys basketball championship at Madison Square Garden.

PAPA DOC - THE TRUTH ABOUT HAITI TODAY
1971
United States foreign policy is challenged by the authors in the same vein as Lederer in Our Own Worst Enemy. The authors believe that the introduction of Marines as military advisors in the early sixties was not in the best interest of the Haitian peoeple. It is inferred that the Marines were not attuned to the situation within the country while they were there.
