The Tim Burton encyclopedia
Umland looks at all aspects of this idiosyncratic storyteller's films, which frequently display childlike wonder and a macabre humor. Entries in this volume focus on Burton's artistic inspirations as well as creative personnel behind the camera, including writers, cinematographers, costume designers, art directors, and other collaborators, notably his frequent composer Danny Elfman. Recurring actors are also represented. Film entries include all of his features such as Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Big Fish, and Dark Shadows. Each entry is followed by a bibliography of published sources, both in print and online. Features entries focused on every stage of Burton's career--including early animated shorts like Frankenweenie and his work as a producer.
The Tim Burton Encyclopedia
The entries in the encyclopedia are listed alphabetically which, in this case, is a little confusing to the reader. Since the encyclopedia includes many different types of creative works, it is hard to distinguish each entry just from the title alone. The audience for this encyclopedia could range from the novice film student to the seasoned professional.
Technology Update
The program incorporates state of the art flash animation that creates innovative, interactive lessons, peppered with animation, graphics, real life problems and quizzes that are designed to help dispel the fear of math, improve student motivation, and lead to better results. In addition to the 2008 publication, The World Book Web, an online site, includes all the articles in the print edition as well as thousands more from World Book's contributors and access to additional resources, including an online atlas, pop-up dictionary, student activities, multimedia resources, and editor-selected websites for additional exploration along with teacher resources and curriculum correlations for educators.
