Woman wakes up from surgery with British accent
by
Wagner, Falon
in
Butler, Karen
2012
[Karen Butler] was now speaking in an accent with a broad mixture of Irish, Scottish, northern British, it even sounded a little Australian and South African. While little research has been done on foreign accent syndrome, there is a chance Butler's mixed accent could fade and she could go back to her old-Oregon drawl. For now, Butler says she and her family are enjoying playing with the new accent. Butler says it is like having a new toy.

ACCENT FROM NOWHERE
by
Ross, Winston
in
Butler, Karen
2011
[Karen Butler] once spoke like you'd expect any Oregonian to - a bland, neutral Pacific Northwest American English. She has family, friends and home videos to prove it. But ever since she awoke from the conscious anesthesia brought about by the drug Halcion during her oral surgery in January of last year, she's been talking funny. She can't revert back to her old American English even if she labors to do it, another possible symptom of the condition Butler believes she has: Foreign Accent Syndrome. \"Our director, Joe Michaels, thinks it's Irish,\" said a thoroughly intrigued Today Show host Meredith Viera, who flew Butler to New York earlier this month for a live interview. \"But he wants to hear the word 'Guinness,' and then he'll be sure.\" Because there's nothing medically wrong with her, Butler's insurance won't cover the kinds of brain scans that might determine what has prompted the mixture of accents to arise in her. In the hours after her surgery, she said her dentist told her she'd surely stop talking strange once her mouth was no longer numb.

Butler, Karen
2006
\"It is Diabetes Awareness Month, so we are trying to focus on the fact that controlling type 2 diabetes is very important in terms of reducing the long-term risks of diabetes complications,\" said Karen Butler, the manager of MEDIC -- a diabetes education program with the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region. \"What we are seeing is that type 2 diabetes is progressive. So for more and more people with type 2 diabetes, insulin therapy might be the best option for them as their diabetes progresses over time,\" Butler said. There are about 13,800 people with diabetes in the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region and each year on average about 1,200 people are diagnosed with diabetes. The majority of those have type 2 diabetes, Butler said.

Parkway workshop crowd unsupportive ; One attendee calls whole public meeting 'a farce'
by
Jacobs, Don
in
Butler, Karen
2006
[Bittle]'s house on W. Gallaher Ferry Road won't be directly affected by the proposed 26.5-mile-long road that he fought as an elected official. At one public meeting, Bittle ripped off his suit jacket in 2002 ready to engage in fisticuffs with the former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Transportation because of a dispute about the route. Bittle, who retired from office in 2004, was opposed to the route that joins Interstate 75 in Loudon and Anderson counties by cutting through Hardin Valley in West Knox County. He favored a more westerly route -- deemed a blue route by TDOT -- that would cut around Roane County and skirt Oak Ridge. People gather around a map of the nearly complete plans for the Knoxville Regional Parkway during a public workshop at Pellissippi State Technical Community College on Tuesday. About 315 people attended the meeting, and their general mood was not supportive of the route. SAUL YOUNG/NEWS SENTINEL
