Dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) and Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) crossbreeding husbandry practices in Turkey and Kazakhstan: An in-depth review
2020
Hybridization between dromedaries and Bactrian camels has been carried out since ancient times in various areas of the Middle East and Central Asia. The primary force behind such practice was to obtain a better pack camel for trade caravans and military interventions. Today, camel hybridization is carried out systematically in only two areas: Turkey and Kazakhstan. In Turkey, camel cross-breeding is mainly done to obtain large animals for the annual camel wrestling competitions, while in Kazakhstan, cross-breeding is done to obtain camels that are more productive and better able to resist the harsh climate of Central Asia.

The curious case of the camel in modern Japan: a metonymy for Asia in the modern Japanese imagination and a barometer of colonialism, orientalism, and Japan's position between Asia and Europe
2022
In The Curious Case of the Camel in Modern Japan Ayelet Zohar critically analyzes camel images as a metonymy for Asia, and Japanese attitudes towards the continent. The book reads into encounters with the exotic animals, from nanban art, realist Dutch-influenced illustrations, through misemono roadshows of the first camel-pair imported in 1821. Modernity and Japan's wars of Pan-Asiatic fantasies associated camels with Asia's poverty, bringing camels into zoos, tourist venues, and military zones, as lowly beasts of burden, while postwar images project the imago of exotica and foreignness on camels as Buddhist 'peace' messengers. Zohar convincingly argues that in the Japanese imagination, camels serve as signifiers of Asia as Otherness, the opposite of Japan's desire for self-association with Western cultures.

We used PCR, Sanger sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis to identify Wesselsbron virus (WSLV) clade 1 in sick camels from Borana Zone, Ethiopia. Although WSLV primarily infects sheep and cattle, its pathogenicity in camels remains unclear. Camel farmers in the region should be aware of WSLV and its health effects in camels.
