Revisiting the corporate social performance-financial performance link: A replication of Waddock and Graves
Research summary: In this study, we revisit the relationship between corporate social performance (CSP) and corporate financial performance (CFP) by conducting a replication of Waddock and Graves (1997). Using 1990 KLD ratings as the CSP measure, the original study reports a positive bidirectional relationship between CSP and CFP. However, our replication analyses with a larger sample over a longer time period indicate that the findings of the original study may not be generalizable to different samples. We argue that our replication casts doubt on the original study and can serve as a starting point to reconsider the CSP-CFP relationship. Based on the findings of our replication, we discuss the differences between the replication results and the original findings, and then suggest several approaches to revise and extend the original study. Managerial summary: Advocates of corporate social performance (CSP) have long argued that \"doing good leads to doing well.\" However, the evidence to support this argument is not strongly convincing, and managers hence doubt whether better CSP leads to improved corporate financial performance (CFP). In this article, we directly examine the relationship between CSP and CFP. Our article reports that CSP may not have a positive influence on CFP. Instead, our article shows the complexity of the relationship between CSP and CFP. Therefore, we cannot simply argue that doing good will necessarily lead to doing well.
Isolation, Genomics-Based and Biochemical Characterization of Bacteriocinogenic Bacteria and Their Bacteriocins, Sourced from the Gastrointestinal Tract of Meat-Producing Pigs
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant challenge to animal production due to the widespread use of antibiotics. Therefore, there is an urgent need for alternative antimicrobial strategies to effectively manage bacterial infections, protect animal health, and reduce reliance on antibiotics. This study evaluated the use of emerging approaches and procedures for the isolation, identification, and characterization of bacteriocin-producing bacteria and their bacteriocins, sourced from the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of meat-producing pigs. Out of 2056 isolates screened against Gram-positive and Gram-negative indicator strains, 20 of the most active antimicrobial isolates were subjected to whole genome sequencing (WGS) for the prediction of coding DNA sequences (CDS) and the identification of bacteriocin gene clusters (BGC) and their functions. The use of an in vitro cell-free protein synthesis (IV-CFPS) protocol and the design of an IV-CFPS coupled to a split-intein mediated ligation (IV-CFPS/SIML) procedure made possible the evaluation of the production and antimicrobial activity of described and putatively novel bacteriocins. A colony MALDI-TOF MS procedure assisted in the identification of class I, II, and III lanthipeptides. MALDI-TOF MS and a targeted proteomics, combined with a massive peptide analysis (LC-MS/MS) approach, has proven valuable for the identification and biochemical characterization of previously described and novel bacteriocins encoded by the isolated bacteriocin-producing strains.
The role of marketing capability in linking CSR to corporate financial performance
PurposeThe authors use signaling theory in proposing a conceptual framework that simultaneously incorporates both the mediating effects of corporate reputation (CR) and the moderating effects of marketing capability (MC) into the corporate social responsibility (CSR)–corporate financial performance (CFP) link and theorize a single moderated mediation model. The empirical results of the research confirm the theorized moderated mediation model among the four variables, where a firm’s CR plays a mediating role in the relationship between CSR and CFP, and a firm’s MC moderates the effect of CSR on CR exclusively in the first link. Both theoretical and practical implications of the moderated mediation model are discussed.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses structural equation model estimations with the relevant secondary datasets collected from publicly available databases.FindingsThe empirical results confirm the theorized moderated mediation model in the conceptual framework that uses signaling theory. Specifically, the results identify the moderating role of MC in only the CSR- CR link (but not in the CR and CFP link), such that CR plays a moderated mediation role in the CSR–CFP link.Research limitations/implicationsThe current research is not without limitations. These limitations mainly stem from data sets used in the empirical analyses. More details are discussed in the limitations and future research directions section.Practical implicationsThe empirical findings suggest that a firm needs to develop a consolidated CSR-marketing program, simultaneously satisfying stakeholders’ needs for both the firm’s socially desirable business practices and value-creating marketing programs to increase its CR, which will, in turn, lead to better profitability for the firm.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, the current research is the first to use signaling theory in building a conceptual framework that theorizes a moderated mediation model regarding the simultaneous effects of CR and MC on the relationship between CSR and CFP and to empirically test this conceptual framework of the single moderated mediation model. By doing so, the current research clarifies an unanswered question in the literature of whether the underlying mechanism in the CSR–CFP link is based on a mediated moderation or moderated mediation of CR and MC.
Reviewing the Business Case for Corporate Social Responsibility: New Evidence and Analysis
This study complements previous empirical research on the business case for corporate social responsibility (CSR) by employing hitherto unused data on corporate social performance (CSP) and proposing statistical analyses to account for bi-directional causality between social and financial performance. By allowing for differences in the importance of single components of CSP between industries, the data in this study overcome certain limitations of the databases used in earlier studies.The econometrics employed offer a rigorous way of addressing the problem of endogeneity due to simultaneous causality. Although the study's results provide no evidence that there is a generic or universal business case for CSR, they indicate that there is a strong link between single stakeholder-related issues of CSR and financial performance. However, the analysis does not establish causality within these relationships.
FAST, a method based on split-GFP for the detection in solution of proteins synthesized in cell-free expression systems
Cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) systems offer a versatile platform for a wide range of applications. However, the traditional methods for detecting proteins synthesized in CFPS, such as radioactive labeling, fluorescent tagging, or electrophoretic separation, may be impractical, due to environmental hazards, high costs, technical complexity, and time consuming procedures. These limitations underscore the need for new approaches that streamline the detection process, facilitating broader application of CFPS. By harnessing the reassembly capabilities of two GFP fragments—specifically, the GFP1-10 and GFP11 fragments—we have crafted a method that simplifies the detection of in vitro synthesized proteins called FAST (Fluorescent Assembly of Split-GFP for Translation Tests). FAST relies on the fusion of the small tag GFP11 to virtually any gene to be expressed in CFPS. The in vitro synthesized protein:GFP11 can be rapidly detected in solution upon interaction with an enhanced GFP1-10 fused to the Maltose Binding Protein (MBP:GFP1-10). This interaction produces a fluorescent signal detectable with standard fluorescence readers, thereby indicating successful protein synthesis. Furthermore, if required, detection can be coupled with the purification of the fluorescent complex using standardized MBP affinity chromatography. The method's versatility was demonstrated by fusing GFP11 to four distinct E. coli genes and analyzing the resulting protein synthesis in both a homemade and a commercial E. coli CFPS system. Our experiments confirmed that the FAST method offers a direct correlation between the fluorescent signal and the amount of synthesized protein:GFP11 fusion, achieving a sensitivity threshold of 8 ± 2 pmol of polypeptide, with fluorescence plateauing after 4 h. Additionally, FAST enables the investigation of translation inhibition by antibiotics in a dose-dependent manner. In conclusion, FAST is a new method that permits the rapid, efficient, and non-hazardous detection of protein synthesized within CFPS systems and, at the same time, the purification of the target protein.
Production of Pumilarin and a Novel Circular Bacteriocin, Altitudin A, by Bacillus altitudinis ECC22, a Soil-Derived Bacteriocin Producer
The rise of antimicrobial resistance poses a significant global health threat, necessitating urgent efforts to identify novel antimicrobial agents. In this study, we undertook a thorough screening of soil-derived bacterial isolates to identify candidates showing antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. A highly active antagonistic isolate was initially identified as Bacillus altitudinis ECC22, being further subjected to whole genome sequencing. A bioinformatic analysis of the B. altitudinis ECC22 genome revealed the presence of two gene clusters responsible for synthesizing two circular bacteriocins: pumilarin and a novel circular bacteriocin named altitudin A, alongside a closticin 574-like bacteriocin (CLB) structural gene. The synthesis and antimicrobial activity of the bacteriocins, pumilarin and altitudin A, were evaluated and validated using an in vitro cell-free protein synthesis (IV-CFPS) protocol coupled to a split-intein-mediated ligation procedure, as well as through their in vivo production by recombinant E. coli cells. However, the IV-CFPS of CLB showed no antimicrobial activity against the bacterial indicators tested. The purification of the bacteriocins produced by B. altitudinis ECC22, and their evaluation by MALDI-TOF MS analysis and LC-MS/MS-derived targeted proteomics identification combined with massive peptide analysis, confirmed the production and circular conformation of pumilarin and altitudin A. Both bacteriocins exhibited a spectrum of activity primarily directed against other Bacillus spp. strains. Structural three-dimensional predictions revealed that pumilarin and altitudin A may adopt a circular conformation with five- and four-α-helices, respectively.
Impact of the new round of Hukou system reforms on rural household development resilience in China
This study employs data from the China Family Panel Studies to construct a staggered difference-in-difference (DID) method, examining the impact of hukou (household registration) system reforms on rural household development resilience. The key findings are as follows: (1) Hukou system reforms significantly enhance rural household development resilience, increasing it by an average of 0.42%. (2) Mechanism analysis reveals that hukou system reforms strengthen rural household development resilience through two paths: facilitating upward mobility and mitigating downward risks. (3) The effects of hukou system reforms exhibit heterogeneity. Regarding household characteristics, the impact is more pronounced for households with with migrant workers. In terms of regional heterogeneity, the reforms have a stronger effect in regions with a higher proportion of primary industry employees. This study not only reveals the mechanism through which hukou system reforms influence the development resilience of rural households, but also provides important practical insights into how these reforms can be better leveraged to promote the sustainable development of rural households.
Exploring the Potential of Cell-Free Protein Synthesis for Extending the Abilities of Biological Systems
Cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) system is a simple, rapid, and sensitive tool that is devoid of membrane-bound barriers, yet contains all the mandatory substrates, biomolecules, and machineries required for the synthesis of the desired proteins. It has the potential to overcome loopholes in the current in vivo production systems and is a promising tool in both basic and applied scientific research. It facilitates a simplified organization of desired experiments with a variety of reaction conditions, making CFPS a powerful tool in biological research. It has been used for the expansion of genetic code, assembly of viruses, and in metabolic engineering for production of toxic and complex proteins. Subsequently, CFPS systems have emerged as potent technology for high-throughput production of membrane proteins, enzymes, and therapeutics. The present review highlights the recent advances and uses of CFPS systems in biomedical, therapeutic, and biotechnological applications. Additionally, we highlight possible solutions to the potential biosafety issues that may be encountered while using CFPS technology.
The relationship between social capital and health from a configuration perspective: an evidence from China
Background The debate on the relationship between social capital and health is still ongoing. To enhance previous research, this study uses data drawn from China to analyse the situations in which social capital is related to good health and the various configurations that result in good health outcomes. Methods Using the data of China Family Panel Studies, the conditions of age, gender, marriage, education, income, structural social capital and cognitive social capital were included to analyse the sufficient and necessary conditions for achieving good general health and their different configurations using the fsQCA method. Results None of the listed conditions were prerequisites for excellent general health in terms of either their presence or their absence. The sufficiency analysis found 11 configurations with an average of 3–4 conditions per configuration; in no configuration was the condition of social capital present alone. Structured social capital and cognitive social capital exhibited negative states in configurations 1 and 2, respectively. The most prevalent factor in all configurations was the condition of age. Conclusions The relationship between social capital and health is both positive and negative, with cognitive social capital playing a larger role in the positive relationship than structural social capital. Social capital is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for health, and it must be combined with a variety of other factors to promote health. A variety of methods can be used to promote an individual's health, as different populations require different approaches to good general health, and no single pathway applies to all populations. In the Chinese population, an individual's age is a significant determinant of their health status.
Engineering the Signal Resolution of a Paper-Based Cell-Free Glutamine Biosensor with Genetic Engineering, Metabolic Engineering, and Process Optimization
Specialized cancer treatments have the potential to exploit glutamine dependence to increase patient survival rates. Glutamine diagnostics capable of tracking a patient’s response to treatment would enable a personalized treatment dosage to optimize the tradeoff between treatment success and dangerous side effects. Current clinical glutamine testing requires sophisticated and expensive lab-based tests, which are not broadly available on a frequent, individualized basis. To address the need for a low-cost, portable glutamine diagnostic, this work engineers a cell-free glutamine biosensor to overcome assay background and signal-to-noise limitations evident in previously reported studies. The findings from this work culminate in the development of a shelf-stable, paper-based, colorimetric glutamine test with a high signal strength and a high signal-to-background ratio for dramatically improved signal resolution. While the engineered glutamine test is important progress towards improving the management of cancer and other health conditions, this work also expands the assay development field of the promising cell-free biosensing platform, which can facilitate the low-cost detection of a broad variety of target molecules with high clinical value.
