Nuevas propuestas de la clasificación de diabetes: revisión narrativa
Contexto: según datos de la Federación Internacional de Diabetes (IDF, según sus siglas en inglés) correspondientes al año 2021, tres de cada cuatro pacientes con diabetes viven en países de bajos o medianos ingresos y se espera que el número de individuos alcance los 783 millones para el año 2045. La diabetes fue la causa de muerte del 12,2 % de las personas en el mundo para el año 2021 y, actualmente, los países con mayor número de personas que padecen diabetes son China, India y Estados Unidos. En América del Sur, Brasil ocupa el primer lugar, seguido de México y Colombia. El manejo integral de la diabetes es recomendado en las guías y los programas de abordaje interdisciplinario que buscan un adecuado control, con disminución de hipoglucemias, de complicaciones y generación de autocuidado. La clasificación de la diabetes es un pilar fundamental en el abordaje terapéutico, pronóstico y posibles complicaciones. Objetivo: se realizó una revisión bibliográfica narrativa de la clasificación de la diabetes y sus características. Metodología: se realizó una búsqueda de artículos indexados entre los años 2016 y 2022, en los buscadores Pubmed, Embase, Science Direct y Scopus. Resultados: se encontraron un total de 45 artículos y se seleccionaron 19 por conveniencia. Conclusión: una adecuada clasificación de la diabetes mejora el pronóstico, previene complicaciones y disminuye los gastos. La clasificación de la Asociación Americana de Diabetes y las variables propuestas no son suficientes para subclasificar los fenotipos de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2. El uso de más variables en la subclasificación generará un proceso más complejo, pero permitirá una mejor precisión en tratamientos, prevención de complicaciones y disminución de costos.
Non-monophyly of the woody bamboos (Bambuseae; Poaceae): A multi-gene region phylogenetic analysis of Bambusoideae s.s
The taxonomy of Bambusoideae is in a state of flux and phylogenetic studies are required to help resolve systematic issues. Over 60 taxa, representing all subtribes of Bambuseae and related non-bambusoid grasses were sampled. A combined analysis of five plastid DNA regions, trnL intron, trnL-F intergenic spacer, atpB-rbcL intergenic spacer, rps16 intron, and matK, was used to study the phylogenetic relationships among the bamboos in general and the woody bamboos in particular. Within the BEP clade (Bambusoideae s.s., Ehrhartoideae, Pooideae), Pooideae were resolved as sister to Bambusoideae s.s. Tribe Bambuseae, the woody bamboos, as currently recognized were not monophyletic because Olyreae, the herbaceous bamboos, were sister to tropical Bambuseae. Temperate Bambuseae were sister to the group consisting of tropical Bambuseae and Olyreae. Thus, the temperate Bambuseae would be better treated as their own tribe Arundinarieae than as a subgroup of Bambuseae. Within the tropical Bambuseae, neotropical Bambuseae were sister to the palaeotropical and Austral Bambuseae. In addition, Melocanninae were found to be sister to the remaining palaeotropical and Austral Bambuseae. We discuss phylogenetic and morphological patterns of diversification and interpret them in a biogeographic context.
Identification and Classification of Bulk Paddy, Brown, and White Rice Cultivars with Colour Features Extraction using Image Analysis and Neural Network
We identify five rice cultivars by mean of developing an image processing algorithm. After preprocessing operations, 36 colour features in RGB, HSI, HSV spaces were extracted from the images. These 36 colour features were used as inputs in back propagation neural network. The feature selection operations were performed using STEPDISC analysis method. The mean classification accuracy with 36 features for paddy, brown and white rice cultivars acquired 93.3, 98.8, and 100%, respectively. After the feature selection to classify paddy cultivars, 13 features were selected for this study. The highest mean classification accuracy (96.66%) was achieved with 13 features. With brown and white rice, 20 and 25 features acquired the highest mean classification accuracy (100%, for both of them). The optimised neural networks with two hidden layers and 36-6-5-5, 36-9-6-5, 36-6-6-5 topologies were obtained for the classification of paddy, brown, and white rice cultivars, respectively. These structures of neural network had the highest mean classification accuracy for bulk paddy, brown and white rice identification (98.8, 100, and 100%, respectively).
Landraces: a review of definitions and classifications
The first reference to landraces as genetic resources dates from 1890. Some 20 years later the first definitions of a landrace were published. In the period 1909-1952 several definitions of the term landrace have been presented. No definitions were discovered in articles published in the period 1953-1974. The reason could be that after the Second World War attention of plant breeders and others was focussed on making instant progress. New definitions have been presented since 1974. Genetically related landraces form a landrace group. Synonyms of the term landrace and landrace group as cited in the literature are also given. The classification of types of landraces given by Mayr in 1934 had been discussed and an amended classification provided, paying attention to contamination caused by seed change. As a landrace has a complex and indefinable nature an all-embracing definition cannot be given. However, I suggest the following: an autochthonous landrace is a variety with a high capacity to tolerate biotic and abiotic stress, resulting in a high yield stability and an intermediate yield level under a low input agricultural system.[PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
Conflict between morphology and molecular data: a case of the genus Caryophyllaeus (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), monozoic tapeworms of cyprinid fishes
Molecular analysis of an extensive specimen collection of morphologically distinct tapeworms of the genus Caryophyllaeus (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), parasites of cyprinid fishes in the Palaearctic Region, brought evidence of host-related plasticity in critical morphological characters widely used for species circumscription and classification of these tapeworms. The results obtained here do not support the traditionally used morphological concept of species-defining characters of the order Caryophyllidea Carus, 1863, especially due to high morphological plasticity of the scolex and the anterior end of the body. Several morphotypes within both Caryophyllaeus laticeps and Caryophyllaeus brachycollis generally corresponding to different hosts and geographical regions, were recognised likely suggesting host- and geography-related intraspecific morphological variability. Genetic data confirmed euryxenous host specificity of both species, most profoundly C. laticeps, but did not support the existence of cryptic species. In fact, some of the fish hosts may harbour both of the congeneric species including several of their respective morphotypes. The pattern of morphological and genetic divergence observed in both cestode species studied indicates a scenario of possible host range extensions and subsequent parasite diversification. If molecular sequence variability and host-related morphological polymorphism are confirmed in other groups of monozoic cestodes, it may complicate species identification and straightforward classification of these parasites.
Some aspects of the taxonomy and biology of adult spirurine nematodes parasitic in fishes: a review
About 300 species belonging to four superfamilies (Gnathostomatoidea, Habronematoidea, Physalopteroidea and Thelazioidea) of the nematode suborder Spirurina are known as the adult parasites of freshwater, brackish-water and marine fishes. They are placed in four families, of which the Gnathostomatidae are parasites of elasmobranchs, whereas Ancyracanthus contains one species in teleosts; the Physalopteridae is represented in fish by four genera, each with several species in both elasmobranchs and teleosts. The majority of fish spirurines belongs to the Rhabdochonidae, which includes 10 genera of species parasitizing mainly teleosts, rarely elasmobranchs, and the Cystidicolidae with about 23 genera. Most species of these parasites are poorly known. In Cystidicolidae, several genera have been based on details in the cephalic structures visible only with the aid of SEM, but it will be evident whether or not these tiny features are of generic importance only when more cystidicolids are described using SEM and comparative molecular data become available. Data on the biology of fish spirurines are scarce. In known cases, their life cycles involve aquatic arthropods as intermediate hosts; sometimes, fish paratenic hosts are known to occur in cystidicolids parasitizing as adults piscivorous definitive hosts. Some spirurine species are pathogenic and are known as causative agents of serious fish diseases.
Vignette methodologies for studying clinicians’ decision-making: Validity, utility, and application in ICD-11 field studies
Vignette-based methodologies are frequently used to examine judgments and decision-making processes, including clinical judgments made by health professionals. Concerns are sometimes raised that vignettes do not accurately reflect “real world” phenomena, and that this affects the validity of results and conclusions of these studies. This article provides an overview of the defining features, design variations, strengths, and weaknesses of vignette studies as a way of examining how health professionals form clinical judgments (e.g., assigning diagnoses, selecting treatments). As a “hybrid” of traditional survey and experimental methods, vignette studies can offer aspects of both the high internal validity of experiments and the high external validity of survey research in order to disentangle multiple predictors of clinician behavior. When vignette studies are well designed to test specific questions about judgments and decision-making, they can be highly generalizable to “real life” behavior, while overcoming the ethical, practical, and scientific limitations associated with alternative methods (e.g., observation, self-report, standardized patients, archival analysis). We conclude with methodological recommendations and a description of how vignette methodologies are being used to investigate clinicians’ diagnostic decisions in case-controlled field studies for the ICD-11 classification of mental and behavioural disorders, and how these studies illustrate the preceding concepts and recommendations Las metodologías basadas en viñetas se utilizan frecuentemente para examinar los procesos de toma de decisiones, incluyendo los de profesionales sanitarios. No obstante, existen dudas sobre si las viñetas reflejan adecuadamente los fenómenos del “mundo real” permitiendo resultados y conclusiones válidas. Ofrecemos una visión de las características, variaciones de diseño, fortalezas y debilidades de estos estudios para examinar cómo los profesionales forman juicios clínicos (como el diagnóstico y tratamiento). Siendo “híbridos” de las encuestas tradicionales y los métodos experimentales, estos estudios pueden ofrecer la alta validez interna de los experimentos y la alta validez externa de las encuestas, para aislar múltiples factores predictivos del comportamiento de los clínicos. Un diseño adecuado para poner a prueba preguntas específicas acerca de los juicios y la toma de decisiones permite resultados altamente generalizables a la “vida real”, sin las limitaciones éticas, prácticas y científicas de los métodos alternativos (observación, auto-informe, pacientes estandarizados, análisis de archivos clínicos). Concluimos con recomendaciones metodológicas que se ilustran tras una descripción del uso de las metodologías de viñetas para investigar las decisiones diagnósticas de los clínicos en los estudios de campo de casos y controles para la clasificación de los trastornos mentales y del comportamiento en la CIE-11
Stability of soil aggregates and their ability of carbon sequestration
One of the most important binding agents for forming stable aggregates is a soil organic matter (SOM), which can be retained in various size fractions of aggregates. If aggregates are water-resistant, they retain more carbon. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the stability of aggregates and their ability of carbon sequestration in different soil types and soil management systems in Slovakian vineyards. The highest content of water-stable macro-aggregates (WSAma) was determined in Cambisols, and the lowest in Fluvisols. The highest content of WSAma (size fraction 0.5–3 mm) was determined in Chernozems, decreasing within the following sequence: Fluvisols > Leptosols > Cambisols > Luvisols. The soil type had a statistically significant influence on the re-distribution of soil organic matter in size fractions of water-stable aggregates. The highest content of SOM in water-stable aggregates of the vineyards was determined in grassy strips in-between the vineyard rows in comparison to intensively cultivated rows of vineyard. The highest values of carbon sequestration capacity (CSC) in WSAma were found in Cambisols > Leptosols and the lowest values of CSC were in Fluvisols. The micro-aggregates represented a significant carbon reservoir for the intensively cultivated soils (rows of vineyard). On the other hand, increasing of macro-aggregates (size fraction 0.5–3 mm) was characteristic for grassland soils (between the rows of vineyard).
A pathway-based classification of breast cancer integrating data on differentially expressed genes, copy number variations and MicroRNA target genes
Breast cancer is a clinically heterogeneous disease characterized by distinct molecular aberrations. Understanding the heterogeneity and identifying subgroups of breast cancer are essential to improving diagnoses and predicting therapeutic responses. In this paper, we propose a classification scheme for breast cancer which integrates data on differentially expressed genes (DEGs), copy number variations (CNVs) and microRNAs (miRNAs)-regulated mRNAs. Pathway information based on the estimation of molecular pathway activity is also applied as a postprocessor to optimize the classifier. A total of 250 malignant breast tumors were analyzed by k-means clustering based on the patterns of the expression profiles of 215 intrinsic genes, and the classification performances were compared with existing breast cancer classifiers including the BluePrint and the 625-gene classifier. We show that a classification scheme which incorporates pathway information with various genetic variations achieves better performance than classifiers based on the expression levels of individual genes, and propose that the identified signature serves as a basic tool for identifying rational therapeutic opportunities for breast cancer patients.
