A survey of prototype and experiment for UAV communications
Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications have attracted significant attention from both academia and industry. To facilitate the large-scale usage of UAVs for various applications in practice, we provide a comprehensive survey on the prototype and experiment for UAV communications. To this end, we first provide an overview on the general architecture of the prototype and experiment for UAV communications, and then present experimental verification for air-to-ground channel models and UAV energy consumption models. Next, we discuss measurement experiments on two promising paradigms of UAV communications, namely cellular-connected UAVs and UAV-enabled aerial communication platforms. For the former, we focus on the feasibility study and address the interference mitigation issue. For UAV-enabled aerial communication platforms, we present three scenarios, namely UAV-enabled aerial base stations, UAV-enabled aerial relays and UAV-enabled aerial data collection/dissemination. Finally, we point out some promising future directions for prototype and experimental measurements of UAV communications.
Explaining individual job performance in work from home (WFH) arrangements
PurposeThis study investigates which factors are conducive to individual job performance in large-scale work from home (WFH) arrangements that rely on the current generation of technology, such as information and communications platforms.Design/methodology/approachThe researchers proposed a research model based on research on WFH arrangements. The model was tested based on a survey of 1,183 respondents who engaged in large-scale WFH arrangements during an extensive national COVID-19 lockdown.FindingsThe proposed research model explains 41% of the variance in individual job performance in WFH arrangements. The findings show that the strongest positive predictors for job performance are home office quality and the reach and communication quality of information and communications platforms. A sense of professional isolation was found to have a negative impact.Originality/valueThis study is based on a unique situation of large-scale mandatory WFH arrangements that are comparable to a natural experiment, and it is one of the first studies to conduct an extensive exploration of WFH that relies on the current generation of digital technology.
Linux Scheduler Improvement for Time Demanding Network Applications, Running on Communication Platform Systems
Communication platform systems as, e.g., advanced telecommunication computing architecture (ATCA) standard blades located in standardized chassis, provides high level communication services between system peripherals. Each ATCA blade brings dedicated functionality to the system but can as well exist as separated host responsible for servicing set of task. According to platform philosophy these parts of system can be quite independent against another solutions provided by competitors. Each system design can be different and can face with many computer systems design problems. One of the most difficult design problems to solve is system integration with a set of components running on different operating system levels. This paper presents Linux scheduler improvement possibility to make user space application classified as time demanding (required to be serviced by CPU in given amount of time) running in user space together with complicated kernel software structure in the system.
Automated Design and Integration of Asset Administration Shells in Components of Industry 4.0
One of the central concepts in the principles of Industry 4.0 relates to the methodology for designing and implementing the digital shell of the manufacturing process components. This concept, the Asset Administration Shell (AAS), embodies a systematically formed, standardized data envelope of a concrete component within Industry 4.0. The paper discusses the AAS in terms of its structure, its components, the sub-models that form a substantial part of the shell’s content, and its communication protocols (Open Platform Communication—Unified Architecture (OPC UA) and MQTT) or SW interfaces enabling vertical and horizontal communication to involve other components and levels of management systems. Using a case study of a virtual assembly line that integrates AASs into the technological process, the authors present a comprehensive analysis centered on forming AASs for individual components. In the given context, the manual AAS creation mode exploiting framework-based automated generation, which forms the AAS via a configuration wizard, is assessed. Another outcome consists of the activation of a virtual assembly line connected to real AASs, a step that allows us verify the properties of the distributed manufacturing management. Moreover, a discrete event system was modeled for the case study, enabling the effective application of the Industry 4.0 solution.
Closing Connectivity Gap: An Overview of Mobile Coverage Solutions for Not-Spots in Rural Zones
Access to broadband communications in different parts of the world has become a priority for some governments and regulatory authorities around the world in recent years. Building new digital roads and pursuing a connected society includes looking for easier access to the internet. In general, not all areas where people congregate are fully covered, especially in rural zones, thus restricting access to data communications and inducing inequality. In the present review article, we have comprehensively surveyed the use of three platforms to deliver broadband services to such remote and low-income areas, and they are proposed as follows: unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), altitude platforms (AP), and low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. These novel strategies support the connected and accessible world hypothesis. Hence, UAVs are considered a noteworthy solution since their efficient maneuverability can solve rural coverage issues or not-spots.
Food choice, embodied knowledge and circumscribed agency: factors influencing adolescent girls’ and boys’ dietary practices in three states in northern Nigeria
The objective of this study was to explore adolescent dietary practices, related norms and acceptable communication platforms in northern Nigeria to inform future nutrition project design. This was a qualitative formative research study. We used purposive sampling and conducted thirty focus group discussions with male and female adolescents aged 10-14 and 15-19 years ( 180) and six with adult influencers ( 36). We also administered a 24-h dietary recall with the adolescents using the Diet Quality Questionnaire. The study was conducted in urban and rural areas in three states in northern Nigeria. Adolescents reported consuming six nutritious food groups the previous day on average. However, there was a wide disparity and only half consumed all five recommended food groups. Adolescents' food choices were influenced by perceptions of the functional and physical benefits of nutritious foods and preferences for satisfying foods. Diverse foods were available in the food environment, but affordability constrained access to nutritious foods. Limited access to income and gender norms constrained adolescent agency over food choice. Girls, particularly those who were pregnant, had less agency related to food than boys. Adolescents thought that peers should be reached through group discussions, radio and phones, among other communication platforms. Adolescents consumed relatively diverse diets. Adolescent food choice was influenced by their embodied experience and knowledge related to nutrition and taste, home food environment and circumscribed agency. Opportunities exist to support healthy diets for adolescents by strengthening adolescents' embodied knowledge, food environments and social support.
Research and Experimental Testing of a Remotely Controlled Ankle Rehabilitation Exoskeleton Prototype
Today, there is a high demand for remote rehabilitation using mobile robotic complexes all over the world. They offer a wide range of options for convenient and effective therapy at home to patients and the elderly, especially those bedridden after musculoskeletal injuries. In this case, modern approaches to the development of exoskeletons for the rehabilitation of the lower extremities are especially relevant for the effective restoration of lost motor functions. Taking into account the advantages and features of robotic rehabilitation, this work is devoted to the development of a prototype exoskeleton for the ankle joint and experimental studies of the remote control module. The proposed new exoskeleton prototype design was integrated with a mobile wireless communication platform, allowing remote control of the position of the exoskeleton foot using a remote control device. As a result of functional testing, the root mean square error (RMSE) was 23.9° for dorsiflexion/plantarflexion movements and 12.8° for inversion and eversion movements, as well as an average signal transmission delay of about 100 ms and packet loss of 0.6%. These results reflect the technical feasibility of remote control at a distance of up to 10 m. The developed system is mobile, autonomous, and easy to use, which confirms its suitability as a laboratory platform for functional verification and testing of module consistency.
Vulnerabilities of the Open Platform Communication Unified Architecture Protocol in Industrial Internet of Things Operation
Recently, as new threats from attackers are discovered, the damage and scale of these threats are increasing. Vulnerabilities should be identified early, and countermeasures should be implemented to solve this problem. However, there are limitations to applying the vulnerability discovery framework used in practice. Existing frameworks have limitations in terms of the analysis target. If the analysis target is abstract, it cannot be easily applied to the framework. Therefore, this study proposes a framework for vulnerability discovery and countermeasures that can be applied to any analysis target. The proposed framework includes a structural analysis to discover vulnerabilities from a scenario composition, including analysis targets. In addition, a proof of concept is conducted to derive and verify threats that can actually occur through threat modeling. In this study, the open platform communication integrated architecture used in the industrial control system and industrial Internet of Things environment was selected as an analysis target. We find 30 major threats and four vulnerabilities based on the proposed framework. As a result, the validity of malicious client attacks using certificates and DoS attack scenarios using flooding were validated, and we create countermeasures for these vulnerabilities.
Digital communications between firms and investors: Impact of explanatory responses on investor engagement in online financial Q&A
The emerging trend of digital communications between firms and investors through online question-and-answer (Q&A) platforms is recognized as a vital strategy for managing investor relations, contributing to enhanced market efficiency and information transparency through increased information exchange. Potential investors can seek responses from firm managers to address their information needs, thereby mitigating market uncertainties. To provide foundational insights, we conduct a survey of investors to assess their awareness, usage, and perceptions of firm-investor Q&A platforms. In the subsequent empirical study, we specifically focus on the substance of managers’ responses, which are primarily aimed at clarifying firm events or information. In terms of linguistic properties, our attention is directed toward the use of causal explanations within managers’ responses on investor interactive platforms. Through an examination of user-generated content, i.e., Q&A pairs on the investor interactive platform, we discern a positive correlation between the use of causal language in managerial responses and subsequent investor engagement in firm-investor Q&A communications. In addition, we highlight the role of negation words and response relevance, two language attributes indicating the diagnosticity and informativeness of responses in corporate communication efforts. These findings contribute to a more profound understanding of online communications between firms and potential investors, emphasizing their significance in the management of investor relations. The insights gained offer valuable implications for both firm managers and regulatory entities.
