2023
Figma is the most complete tool for designing apps, websites, and other types of user interfaces (UIs). Unsurprisingly, it's also the most-used UI design tool according to the 2022 Design Tools Survey. Figma can take product design teams all the way from ideation to high-fidelity prototyping—covering all the design processes in between. It can also facilitate diagramming, collaboration, and research. Figma's design handoff and design system management features can help bridge the gap between design and development. It's available for Windows, macOS, and as a browser app. In this book, we'll immerse ourselves in everything Figma has to offer as we design a simple web page. * Get acquainted with Figma. Learn where everything is, while using some of Figma's biggest and most exciting features. * Learn how to collaborate with stakeholders * Discover how to create and use Styles and Components, and how to create Design System Libraries to hold them. * Cean up your design, check its accessibility, export its assets, and make sure that it's ready to be \"handed off\" to developers. * Take a deep dive into some advanced Figma workflows.

Realistic 3D geovisualization is necessary to facilitate the perception of a landscape designer in relation to the environment, which is a determining factor in decision-making in landscape planning and management. In the field of landscape design teaching learning environments, game engines can offer an immersive 3D geovisualization mode through Virtual Reality technology, which, in addition, can be motivating for the student. Game engines allow designing the scenarios where videogames take place, but game engines can also be used for geovisualization tasks in landscape design teaching environments. In this article, we present the landscape workshop, using a Unity 3D game engine. Twenty-five architect students performed landscape design tasks and worked with an interactive 3D geovisualization low-immersive desktop screen environment. The perception of the 3D environment during geovisualization was analyzed through the Questionnaire on User eXperience in Immersive Virtual Environments, and the motivational factor with the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory. Results showed a high perception of the 3D environment during geovisualization in the nine subcategories (sense of presence, engagement, immersion, flow, usability, emotion, judgment, experience consequence, and technology adoption) analyzed. The game engine-based teaching approach carried out has been motivating for students, with values over 5 (in a 1–7 Likert scale) in the five subscales considered.

Structure- and property-based drug design is an integral part of modern drug discovery, enabling the design of compounds aimed at improving potency and selectivity. However, building molecules using desktop modeling tools can easily lead to poor designs that appear to form many favorable interactions with the protein’s active site. Although a proposed molecule looks good on screen and appears to fit into the protein site X-ray crystal structure or pharmacophore model, doing so might require a high-energy small molecule conformation, which would likely be inactive. To help scientists make better design decisions, we have built integrated, easy-to-use, interactive software tools to perform docking experiments, de novo design, shape and pharmacophore based database searches, small molecule conformational analysis and molecular property calculations. Using a combination of these tools helps scientists in assessing the likelihood that a designed molecule will be active and have desirable drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic properties. Small molecule discovery success requires project teams to rapidly design and synthesize potent molecules with good ADME properties. Empowering scientists to evaluate ideas quickly and make better design decisions with easy-to-access and easy-to-understand software on their desktop is now a key part of our discovery process.

Finding Aids Unleashed
2025
New York University Libraries recently completed a redesign for their finding aids publishing service to replace an outdated XSLT stylesheet publishing method. The primary design goals focused on accessibility and usability for patrons, including improving the presentation of digital archival objects. In this article, we focus on the iterative process devised by a team of designers, developers, and archivists. We discuss our process for creating a data model to map Encoded Archival Description files exported from ArchivesSpace into JSON structured data for use with Hugo, an open-source static site generator. We present our overall systems design for the suite of microservices used to automate and scale this process. The new solution is available for other institutions to leverage for their finding aids.
