Collecting and Integrating National Laws and Regulations on Construction in Coastal Areas
Instructions for designing coastal structures in order to create coordination and uniformity in the criteria for designing, constructing, supervising and executing coastal structures and projects subject to that instruction, as well as observing the principles, methods and technologies appropriate to the applied equipment and compatible with the conditions and requirements. So present study aimed to collecting and integrating national laws and regulations on construction in coastal areas was performed. Descriptive and analytical method is a suitable method for the present study. The study method in the research is library method and is a tool for collecting information from valid domestic and foreign sources.Also, the publication has been tried to be compiled in such a way that due to the limited access to the texts of standards and regulations and in order to expand the culture of technical knowledge and transfer it to the design and implementation factors of projects, the content of applicable instructions and technical criteria to be available to users as much as possible. Compilation of comprehensive instructions for designing coastal structures with all its positive features seems necessary to design specific instructions for Iran in accordance with environmental conditions. However, in the current situation where other guidelines are used as a basis, it is necessary for the academic education system to move in this direction and identify the shortcomings and deficiencies of this foreign guideline and rewrite it based on local characteristics. Instrucciones para el diseño de estructuras costeras con el fin de generar coordinación y uniformidad en los criterios de diseño, construcción, supervisión y ejecución de estructuras y proyectos costeros sujetos a dicha instrucción, así como observar los principios, métodos y tecnologías adecuados a los equipos aplicados y compatibles con las condiciones y requisitos. Por lo que se realizó el presente estudio destinado a recopilar e integrar las leyes y normativas nacionales sobre construcción en zonas costeras. El método descriptivo y analítico es un método adecuado para el presente estudio. El método de estudio en la investigación es el método de biblioteca y es una herramienta para recopilar información de fuentes válidas nacionales y extranjeras. Asimismo, se ha intentado que la publicación sea compilada de tal manera que debido al acceso limitado a los textos de normas y reglamentos y con el fin de expandir la cultura del conocimiento técnico y transferirlo a los factores de diseño e implementación de proyectos, la el contenido de las instrucciones aplicables y los criterios técnicos para que estén disponibles para los usuarios tanto como sea posible. La compilación de instrucciones completas para diseñar estructuras costeras con todas sus características positivas parece necesaria para diseñar instrucciones específicas para Irán de acuerdo con las condiciones ambientales. Sin embargo, en la situación actual donde se toman como base otras pautas, es necesario que el sistema educativo académico avance en esta dirección e identifique las falencias y deficiencias de esta pauta extranjera y la reescriba en función de las características locales.
The Climate of Rebellion in the Early Modern Ottoman Empire
The Climate of Rebellion in the Early Modern Ottoman Empire explores the serious and far-reaching impacts of Little Ice Age climate fluctuations in Ottoman lands. This study demonstrates how imperial systems of provisioning and settlement that defined Ottoman power in the 1500s came unraveled in the face of ecological pressures and extreme cold and drought, leading to the outbreak of the destructive Celali Rebellion (1595–1610). This rebellion marked a turning point in Ottoman fortunes, as a combination of ongoing Little Ice Age climate events, nomad incursions and rural disorder postponed Ottoman recovery over the following century, with enduring impacts on the region's population, land use and economy.

Examining the science of stream restoration, Rebecca Lave argues that the neoliberal emphasis on the privatization and commercialization of knowledge has fundamentally changed the way that science is funded, organized, and viewed in the United States.Stream restoration science and practice is in a startling state. The most widely respected expert in the field, Dave Rosgen, is a private consultant with relatively little formal scientific training. Since the mid-1990s, many academic and federal agency-based scientists have denounced Rosgen as a charlatan and a hack. Despite this, Rosgen's Natural Channel Design approach, classification system, and short-course series are not only accepted but are viewed as more legitimate than academically produced knowledge and training. Rosgen's methods are now promoted by federal agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, as well as by resource agencies in dozens of states.Drawing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Lave demonstrates that the primary cause of Rosgen's success is neither the method nor the man but is instead the assignment of a new legitimacy to scientific claims developed outside the academy, concurrent with academic scientists' decreasing ability to defend their turf. What is at stake in the Rosgen wars, argues Lave, is not just the ecological health of our rivers and streams but the very future of environmental science.
Comparing futures for the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta
An ecosystem in freefall, a shrinking water supply for cities and agriculture, an antiquated network of failure-prone levees—this is the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the major hub of California's water system. Written by a team of independent water experts, this analysis of the latest data evaluates proposed solutions to the Delta's myriad problems. Through in-depth economic and ecological analysis, the authors find that the current policy of channeling water exports through the Delta is not sustainable for any interest. Employing a peripheral canal-conveying water around the Delta instead of through it—as part of a larger habitat and water management plan appears to be the best strategy to maintain both a high-quality water supply and at the same time improve conditions for native fish and wildlife. This important assessment includes integrated analysis of long term ecosystem and water management options and demonstrates how issues such as climate change and sustainability will shape the future. Morphoanatomical leaf “D” evaluation of pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr. var. comosus) in response of two cropping systems in Corrientes, Argentina
A feasible possibility to cultivate tropical species in the subtropics is compensate the limitations of the low temperatures using plastic covers that modify the environment and the consequent crop response. The aim of this research was to evaluate in morphoanatomical terms, the \"D\" leaves of pineapple plants growing under different cropping conditions, linking some differentiations in their morphological, anatomical and ecophysiological characteristics in relation to the year seasons. Leaf area, fresh and dry weight, sheet thickness, water holding capacity, number of spines, chlorophyll content were measured and histological sections for morphoanatomical observations were carried out. In the present research, it was found that the environmental conditions under coverage, increased leaf area, dry weight and fresh weight of \"D\" leaves pineapple during and after the cold seasons, respect to those cropped under field conditions. Pineapple Leaves growing under greenhouse conditions, increased stomatal frequency, performed more fiber beans but thinner aquifers and chlorenchyma than those grown in field conditions, indicating phenotypic plasticity.

There is a growing consensus in the scientific realm that the world’s oceans are reaching a state of crisis as commercial fisheries are more widely overexploited and many coastal ecosystems are approaching collapse. A number of scientists and resource managers have argued that a successful understanding of the current crisis can be found through the development of a deeper historical perspective of the ecology of coastal ecosystems and the impacts that humans have had on them. In Modern Oceans, Ancient Sites: Archaeology and Marine Conservation on San Miguel Island, California , Todd Braje works to provide just such an understanding, bridging the divide between the archaeological record and the modern crisis.   Using archaeological, paleoecological, and historical datasets from California’s Channel Islands and the larger Santa Barbara Channel region, Braje explores the evolving relationship between humans and fragile island ecosystems. Instituting nature
Greater knowledge and transparency are often promoted as the keys to solving a wide array of governance problems. In Instituting Nature, Andrew Mathews describes Mexico's efforts over the past hundred years to manage its forests through forestry science and biodiversity conservation. He shows that transparent knowledge was produced not by official declarations or scientists' expertise but by encounters between the relatively weak forestry bureaucracy and the indigenous people who manage and own the pine forests of Mexico. Mathews charts the performances, collusions, complicities, and evasions that characterize the forestry bureaucracy. He shows that the authority of forestry officials is undermined by the tension between local realities and national policy; officials must juggle sweeping knowledge claims and mundane concealments, ambitious regulations and routine rule breaking. Moving from government offices in Mexico City to forests in the state of Oaxaca, Mathews describes how the science of forestry and bureaucratic practices came to Oaxaca in the 1930s and how local environmental and political contexts set the stage for local resistance. He tells how the indigenous Zapotec people learned the theory and practice of industrial forestry as employees and then put these skills to use when they become the owners and managers of the area's pine forests--eventually incorporating forestry into their successful claims for autonomy from the state. Despite the apparently small scale and local contexts of this balancing act between the power of forestry regulations and the resistance of indigenous communities, Mathews shows that it has large implications--for how we understand the modern state, scientific knowledge, and power and for the global carbon markets for which Mexican forests might become valuable.The hardcover edition does not include a dust jacket.
