Small-amplitude Red Giants Elucidate the Nature of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch as a Standard Candle

The tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) is an important standard candle for determining luminosity distances. Although several 105 small-amplitude red giant stars (SARGs) have been discovered, variability was previously considered irrelevant for the TRGB as a standard candle. Here, we show that all stars near the TRGB are SARGs that follow several period–luminosity sequences, of which sequence A is younger than sequence B as predicted by stellar evolution. We measure apparent TRGB magnitudes, m TRGB, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using Sobel filters applied to photometry from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment and the ESA Gaia mission, and we identify several weaknesses in a recent LMC-based TRGB calibration used to measure the Hubble constant. We consider four samples: all red giants (RGs), SARGs, and sequences A and B. The B sequence is best suited for measuring distances to old RG populations, with M F814W,0 = −4.025 ± 0.014(stat.) ± 0.033(syst.) mag assuming the LMC’s geometric distance. Control of systematics is demonstrated using detailed simulations. Population diversity affects m TRGB at a level exceeding the stated precision: the SARG and A-sequence samples yield 0.039 and 0.085 mag fainter (at 5σ significance) m TRGB values, respectively. Ensuring equivalent RG populations is crucial to measuring accurate TRGB distances. Additionally, luminosity function smoothing (∼0.02 mag) and edge detection response weighting (as much as −0.06 mag) can further bias TRGB measurements, with the latter introducing a tip-contrast relation. We are optimistic that variable RGs will enable further improvements to the TRGB as a standard candle.

RR Lyrae Mid-infrared Period–Luminosity–Metallicity and Period–Wesenheit–Metallicity Relations Based on Gaia DR3 Parallaxes

We present new empirical infrared period–luminosity–metallicity (PLZ) and period–Wesenheit–metallicity (PWZ) relations for RR Lyae based on the latest Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) parallaxes. The relations are provided in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) W1 and W2 bands, as well as in the W(W1, V − W1) and W(W2, V − W2) Wesenheit magnitudes. The relations are calibrated using a very large sample of Galactic halo field RR Lyrae stars with homogeneous spectroscopic [Fe/H] abundances (over 1000 stars in the W1 band), covering a broad range of metallicities (−2.5 ≲ [Fe/H] ≲ 0.0). We test the performance of our PLZ and PWZ relations by determining the distance moduli of both galactic and extragalactic stellar associations: the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy in the Local Group (finding μ¯0=19.47±0.06 ), the Galactic globular clusters M4 ( μ¯0=11.16±0.05 ), and the Reticulum globular cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud ( μ¯0=18.23±0.06 ). The distance moduli determined through all our relations are internally self-consistent (within ≲0.05 mag) but are systematically smaller (by ∼2–3σ) than previous literature measurements taken from a variety of methods/anchors. However, a comparison with similar recent RR Lyrae empirical relations anchored with EDR3 likewise shows, to varying extents, a systematically smaller distance modulus for PLZ/PWZ RR Lyrae relations.

802 A safer candle project South Africa

BackgroundThere are two main causes of shack fires in South Africa: Fallen candles and paraffin-related burns. These fires lead to devastating consequences and huge economic losses.Aim/goalThe goal of this project is to facilitate and promote safer use of candles in a glass jar, with the ultimate aim to prevent fires, burn injuries and deaths caused by fallen candles, targeting individuals and families who live in informal homes.Material and methodsChildsafe South Africa personnel conducted a number of trials to test the “Candle in a glass jar” concept. In 2006, the project was piloted in an informal area that exclusively uses candles as source of light. Further demonstration and educational sessions have taken place and over 100,000 jar units have been distributed to various communities to date.ResultsThe Safer Candle Project has become one of Childsafe’s established out-reach programmes over 10 year period.It has been widely accepted and been approved by World Wide Fund for Nature SA (WWF) for Earth Hour and endorsed by various stakeholders and sponsors.SignificanceThe idea of candle in the glass jar is recommended as its very simple and preventative measure to reduce fires mainly caused by candles tipping. One of its advantages is that it places no financial burden on families, as there are virtually no costs involved.
