Lisa Carrington might be making her Olympic debut but the New Zealand kayaker left the experienced eastern Europeans in her wake as she stormed to gold in the women's sprint . The 23-year-old world champion, who is part Maori, beat Ukraine's Inna Osypenko-Radomska and Hungarian Natasa Douchev-Janics, who picked up silver and bronze. Carrington - who wears a greenstone Maori necklace when she's racing for 'wildtail strength and protection' - said: \"You can never predict how fast everyone is going so I just went as fast as I could.\"

I started entering small competitions and then kept setting the goals higher each time.\" Setting herself the goal of a top 20 ranking, she now says she has learned how she will take on her older peers next year in the open competition. \"I have brought back the knowledge that I have to train harder and become stronger and fitter - in the open teams fitness is so important.\"

AUCKLAND, Feb 14 NZN - Young paddler Aimee Fisher's impressive performances at the national canoeing championships has continued with her direct passage through to the K1 200m final. The Hawke's Bay 20-year-old had earlier combined with North Shore's Caitlin Ryan to take out the K2 500m title, ahead of [Lisa Carrington] and Jaimee Lovett. Carrington and Lovett got a measure of revenge in the K2 200m final, with Fisher and Ryan collecting silver.

Linda Tangi, 64, of Lancaster, Calif., was driving her black 1999 Jaguar west on Seltice Way at about 4 p.m. when she clipped a Dodge truck that she was trying to pass on the right shoulder, said Sgt. Lisa Carrington of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department. The 2001 truck, driven by Michael Knight, a 52-year-old Newman Lake resident, landed in the middle of oncoming traffic. Deborah Zak of Worley, Idaho, was driving east on Seltice Way and couldn't avoid hitting the truck, Carrington said.
