Reclaiming Basque : language, nation, and cultural activism
The Basque language, Euskara, is one of Europe's most ancient tongues and a vital part of today's lively Basque culture. Reclaiming Basque examines the ideology, methods, and discourse of the Basque-language revitalization movement over the course of the past century and the way this effort has unfolded alongside the simultaneous Basque nationalist struggle for autonomy. Jacqueline Urla employs extensive long-term fieldwork, interviews, and close examination of a vast range of documents in several media to uncover the strategies that have been used to preserve and revive Euskara and the various controversies that have arisen among Basque-language advocates.
Marching against gender practice
Marching against Gender Practice asks why the majority of people in the Basque town of Hondarribia do not accept women's broader participation in the Alarde parade which represents locality, regionalism, and nationalism. It is centered on two opposing gender worldviews between the betikoak traditionalists and Women of Mugarrietakoa feminists.
European Union and the accommodation of Basque difference in Spain
How does the European Union affect devolution and nationalist conflict in member states? Does the EU reduce the scope of regional self-government or enhance it? Does it promote conflict or cooperation among territorial entities? These are pressing questions in Spanish politics, where devolution has been an important tool for managing nationalist disputes, and for the Basque Country, where protracted and sometimes violent nationalist conflicts persist. Addressing these issues, this book explores prospects for an autonomous Basque role in EU politics; institutional arrangements for autonomous community participation in EU decision making; Basque government alliances with other regions and the EU's supranational bodies; EU incentives for collaboration among Basque and central state authorities; the impact of EU decisions on politically sensitive Basque competencies; and the incidence of EU issues in nationalist disputes. It presents a new theoretical framework for analysing the impact of the EU on regional power and will be of interest to students, researchers and general observers of Basque, Spanish and EU politics.
Basques in the Philippines
The Basques played a remarkably influential role in the creation and maintenance of Spain's colonial establishment in the Philippines.Their skills as shipbuilders and businessmen, their evangelical zeal, and their ethnic cohesion and work-oriented culture made them successful as explorers, colonial administrators, missionaries, merchants, and.
Fleeing franco
In 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, four thousand children escaped by ship from Bilbao and were given sanctuary in Britain. The book focuses on the experiences of the exiles who came to Wales where four Homes were established; it includes several first-hand accounts from surviving refugees. In one camp unrest by some of the boys became headline news, but overwhelmingly the children’s experiences were of generosity and solidarity from ordinary people, even though Wales was itself suffering from extreme poverty.
Bridge
The Romanization of Central Spain
Curchin explores how, why and to what extent the peoples of Central Spain were integrated into the Roman Empire during the period from the second century BC to the second century AD.He approaches the question from a variety of angles, including the social, economic, religious and material experiences of the inhabitants as they adjusted to change, the mechanisms by which they adopted new structures and values, and the power relations between Rome and the provincials. The book also considers the peculiar cultural features of Central Spain, which made its Romanization so distinctive.
The purpose of this paper is to present several unpublished fragments of five stelae from Lara de los Infantes. Two of them form a quadrangular piece that was part of a stele of considerable dimensions. Two others come from discoidal stelae, one with a warrior scene and the other with a horseman with a spear. Another fragment comes from a stele with a semi-circular head. The last fragment comes from a discoid stele with a horseman, which could be a Celtiberian stele.
