Āyurveda and Mind-Body Healing
This paper explores the early autobiographical work of the popular health and wellbeing guru, Deepak Chopra. The autobiography (entitled Return of the Rishi) is Chopra’s account of his early forays into meditation and Āyurveda, the Indian health tradition. It is the story of his “spiritual transformation” and his development into a proficient Āyurvedic healer. Following the lead of his one-time guru and mentor, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Chopra represents Āyurveda as “consciousness-based” medicine. This paper demonstrates how, by means of a series of narrative strategies deploying the motif of the semi-divine ṛṣi, or sage, and fore-grounding personal experience as the ultimate source of spiritual legitimacy and authority, Chopra (a biomedical doctor with little or no formal training in Āyurveda) seeks to secure legitimacy as an authority on Āyurveda and an adept with extraordinary healing powers.
Are the grapes sour...?
[INLINE:1] \"When you blame and criticize others, you are avoiding some truth about yourself\" -Deepak Chopra Over the last one and a half years, the hot topic of discussion among maximum number of academicians was the admission of students in post graduation (P.G.) and their likely choice. The number of seats, which went vacant last year in the subject of Periodontology, demonstrated the loss of interest among graduates of dentistry towards the subject and an emerging crisis for our branch. An availability of huge number of periodontal patients in dental colleges provides an opportunity to the students to master the science of periodontology besides providing the patients with treatment at affordable cost.
Intention and the Unexpected: Manifesting the Storytelling Librarian’s Goals
Telling stories to children requires planning and creativity. With thorough plans and tools, the storyteller librarian intends to benefit children. However, what often occurs during storytime is ultimately not in the librarian’s control. One can hope storytime goes well, but transforming that hope into a manifested outcome begins with intention. Intention is a means of activating our will and creativity to do what is necessary to accomplish goals. Setting intentions for dealing with the unexpected includes what we desire to happen. This helps create a type of container for storytime that includes skills, tools, and desires. Here I’ll explain how to work with intention in ways that benefit the storyteller librarian, referred to in this article as storyteller.
The Work of Andrew Weil and Deepak Chopra-Two Holistic Health/New Age Gurus: A Critique of the Holistic Health/New Age Movements
Despite the popular roots of the holistic health/New Age movements, a growing number of biomedical physicians have become proponents of holistic health as well as New Age healing. Over the past two decades, Andrew Weil and Deepak Chopra, two biomedically trained physicians, have emerged as the visible and financially successful spokespersons of the movement. This article provides brief biographical sketches of Weil and Chopra and compares and contrasts their respective views on health, illness, healing, and health care. It also considers the response of various biomedical parties to these holistic health/New Age gurus who have attempted to integrate biomedicine and various alternative healing and metaphysical systems. Finally, this article argues that Weil and Chopra both epitomize the limitations of the holistic health/New Age movements, albeit in different ways.
