The Effect of Conductor Expressivity on Choral Ensemble Evaluation
2014
Visual information can contribute significantly to the opinion one makes, the meaning one ascribes, and the interpretation one derives from musical information. An ongoing series of studies has examined whether a conductor’s use of gesture in a manner considered either “expressive” or “inexpressive” affects listeners’ evaluations of an ensemble performance. Prior results have indicated that among university music students instrumental performances led by conductors deemed to be expressive were evaluated more positively than those led by inexpressive conductors even when the performances were actually identical. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether a similar response pattern would be observed (a) among younger and less experienced music students and (b) for choral performance examples, as well as (c) to compare responses against evaluations of performances presented in an audio-only condition. Students (N = 429) enrolled in secondary level music classes rated the expressivity of two pairs of two identical choral performance excerpts (four excerpts in all) using a 10-point Likerttype scale. One group (n = 274) watched a video performance of the four excerpts featuring conductors who demonstrated either high-expressivity (HE) or low-expressivity (LE) conducting techniques. There was a significant effect of conducting condition on both the conductor and choral performance evaluations. When compared with the evaluations of a second group of participants (n = 155) who heard the same excerpts presented in an audio-only format, LE performance ratings were significantly lower; there was no difference between HE and audio-only ratings.

Choruses with orchestra - 17th century
2013
In A Conductor’s Guide to Selected Baroque Choral-Orchestral Works, Jonathan D. Green's sixth book-length contribution of guides for conductors, he offers this companion to his critically acclaimed A Conductor’s Guide to the Choral-Orchestral Works of J. S. Bach. In this volume, Green addresses works of the Baroque era from Monteverdi through Bach's contemporaries. In addition to brief biographical sketches for each composer, Green includes for each work the approximate duration, text sources, performing forces, currently available editions, locations of manuscript materials, notes, performance issues, evaluation of solo roles, evaluation of difficulty, and a discography and bibliography. Duration information comes from a variety of sources, but Green turns to actual recording times of performances. The purpose of this book is to aid conductors in selecting repertoire appropriate to their needs and the abilities of their ensembles. The discographies and bibliographies, while not exhaustive, serve as helpful starting points for further research. A Conductor’s Guide to Selected Baroque Choral-Orchestral Works should appeal to conductors in supporting their concert programming. Librarians and music student will also find this work an ideal reference title for the study of Baroque repertoire.
The Robert Shaw Reader
2004,2008
Robert Shaw is considered to be the most influential choral conductor in American history. This is the first collection of his letters and notes about music ever published-at another time, it is the book Shaw would have written himself. The letters are an invigorating mix of music history and analysis, philosophy, inspiration, and practical advice. Shaw examines technique, but only as a means to an end-he moves beyond that, delving into the essence of what music is and what it has to say to us. The heart of the book is composed of Shaw's previously unpublished notes on fifteen major choral works, ranging from Bach's B Minor Mass to Stravinsky'sSymphony of Psalms.Often inspiring and sometime hilarious, these writings reveal the full breadth of Shaw's knowledge, intensity, and humor.
Strategies and Path Analysis of Choral Conducting Teaching in Colleges and Universities in the Context of Multimedia Era
2024
This paper first presents the O2O teaching strategy for choral conducting and analyzes specific methods and processes for teaching choral conducting using the O2O model. Then, the TFAHP choral conducting teaching evaluation model was constructed, and the judgment matrix was used to calculate the comprehensive degree of fuzzy value of the evaluation criteria and to compare the importance value between the indicators. Lastly, the impact of teaching was evaluated using indicators such as grades, comprehensive performance, and learning emotions. The mean value of the achievement of all knowledge modules is much higher than the mean value before teaching, and the average value of the achievement of each knowledge module is between 0.6-0.85, and the P value of each knowledge module is lower than 0.01, which is an extremely significant difference, indicating that the teaching effect is significant. The innovative development of music education is promoted, and this study greatly impacts choral conducting education.

Sound Advice
2003
Always a vital part of community cultural life, children’s choirs can be small amateur clubs or sophisticated arts organizations on a par with adult professional choirs and orchestras. Whatever a choir’s size and ambitions, its director faces a formidable challenge. Jean Ashworth Bartle, director of the award-winning Toronto Children’s Chorus, has collected her experience and wisdom in Sound Advice. In a clear and direct style, the book offers tips on basics such as conducting fun, effective rehearsals and advanced projects including recording and touring. Stressing that the choir director’s fundamental task is to develop musicianship through singing, Bartle suggests skill-building exercises and interactive rehearsal techniques. The book’s appendixes form a sourcebook of warm-ups, repertoire, and suggested programmes, providing several seasons’ worth of inspiration. For teachers just starting out with their choirs, students of the child voice and teaching methods, and experienced choir directors seeking to take their students one step further, Sound Advice will benefit all choir directors who want their choirs to reach a higher level of artistry, musicianship and skill.
Choral Pedagogy
2013
Choral Pedagogy, Third Edition, is the ideal text for voice teachers, choral conductors, church musicians, and professional and amateur singers who wish to develop strategies for lifelong singing. It concisely and clearly presents the principles of voice pedagogy from the perspective of both conducting and voice science in a user- friendly fashion, including helpful charts and simple anatomic diagrams. In addition, it offers teaching methods from history and philosophy, medical and voice science, and pedagogical concepts from active musical experts. Special attention is given to the needs of amateur singers and conductors. Topics covered include choral diction, posture and seating, rehearsal practices, and matters of vocal health.. For the third edition, the authors have completely revised the text, updating the medical information and expanding the exercises. They have also added two new chapters:. A chapter entitled \"Singing in the 21st Century\" that considers the vocal/choral demands of the choral repertoire being written in this century. A chapter on teaching young boys to sing written by Vic Oakes, the conductor of the Chattanooga Boys Choir. With its updates and additions, Choral Pedagogy, Third Edition, is a valuable resource for students of choral conducting, music education, church music, and choral singing.
