[James Chuter Ede] wrote to [J Arthur Rank] in August 1947 telling him that if such an approved school existed it would be his duty to close it down. He later had lunch with the film mogul and extracted a promise of improvements. Rank then compounded his offence by adding a scene suggesting that the girl's downfall was the fault of the poor quality of teachers at the school. Sir Sidney Harris, the official censor, told Chuter Ede that he regarded it as deplorable that Rank should stoop so low as to produce such a sordid and undesirable story. But there were no grounds for refusing it a certificate for public viewing. Chuter Ede told Rank that he could see no way of altering the film other than by removing the offending passage altogether, and warning that he would speak out against it if questions were raised in the Commons.
