The year 2010 marked the 100th anniversary of Mark Twain’s death. In celebration of this important milestone and in honor of the cherished tradition of publishing Mark Twain's works, UC Press published Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1, the first of a projected three-volume edition of the complete, uncensored autobiography. The book became an immediate bestseller and was hailed as the capstone of the life’s work of America's favorite author. This Reader's Edition, a portable paperback in larger type, republishes the text of the hardcover Autobiography in a form that is convenient for the general reader, without the editorial explanatory notes. It includes a brief introduction describing the evolution of Mark Twain's ideas about writing his autobiography, as well as a chronology of his life, brief family biographies, and an excerpt from the forthcoming Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 2—a controversial but characteristically humorous attack on Christian doctrine.

In post-revolutionary Europe, the rise of nationalisms constitutes a movement both political and cultural that has been defined everywhere as resolutely anti-French: with the conquests of Napoléon, a political supremacy had indeed added, at the beginning of the 19 th century, to the intellectual and cultural reign of Enlightenment France. This article recalls, first, how European nationalisms appeared, then points out that this phenomenon is linked to the birth of Romanticism and evokes the reluctance manifested by France in the constitution of its own nationalism, because it seemed to fly in the face of French habits, from Louis XIV to Napoléon. Second, the article examines how Chateaubriand, once an opponent of Napoléon, integrated into his political thought the new data of nationalism and how he helped to define its contours, in a country which, by vocation \"universalist\", appeared the European nation least susceptible to this temptation. We will thus see the specificities, even the contradictions, of French nationalism.

Traduire le Black English (« C’est comme ça des fois. »)

Le problème de la traduction des sociolectes demeure « […] one of the biggest lacunae in translation studies » (Herrera 2014 : 290). Dans ce qui suit, j’espère contribuer à la discussion entamée par Brodsky (1993, 1996), Lavoie (1994, 2002) et d’autres sur la traduction du vernaculaire noir américain (VNA) en examinant le cas de deux romans autobiographiques de Maya Angelou, I Know Why theCaged Bird Sings (1969) et The Heart of a Woman (1981), et le bestseller de Lawrence Hill, The Book of Negroes (2007). Il s’avère que le rôle du Black English dans ces romans dépasse celui de la simple « couleur locale ». Comment les traducteurs Besse (2008), Saint-Martin et Gagné (2008), et Noël (2011/2014), les traducteurs des romans précédemment cités, ont-ils négocié la tension entre fidélité à la langue source et fidélité à la langue cible ? Il ressort de cette étude qu’une plus grande volonté de dévier des normes et des formes du français permettrait de mieux « traduire » ce parler noir dans le but d’en préserver la valeur culturelle et idéologique.

La retraduction de Huckleberry Finn : Huck a-t-il (enfin) trouvé sa voix ?
Les différentes traductions françaises de Adventures of Huckleberry Finn de Mark Twain ont souvent fait l’objet de critiques, qui mettaient surtout l’accent sur les lacunes traductives concernant le traitement des spécificités langagières du roman. Dans cet article, nous proposons de voir en quoi la nouvelle traduction de Bernard Hoepffner, publiée aux éditions Tristram en 2008, se démarque de certaines versions antérieures quant à la façon dont a été traduite la voix de Huck. Nous portons notre attention sur le projet de retraduction et examinons quelques aspects quantitatifs mais surtout qualitatifs du texte, avec l’étude de différents marqueurs (lexicaux, phonographologiques, morphologiques, syntaxiques et grammaticaux), qui montrent l’inventivité dont a fait preuve le traducteur. Enfin, nous nous intéressons à la réception de cette traduction en France et tentons de voir si les commentaires dithyrambiques sont justifiés ou sont susceptibles d’être nuancés.
