Novel citation-based search method for scientific literature: a validation study
Objective: We recently developed CoCites, a citation-based search method that is designed to be more efficient than traditional keyword-based methods. The method begins with identification of one or more highly relevant publications (query articles) and consists of two searches: the co-citation search, which ranks publications on their co-citation frequency with the query articles, and the citation search, which ranks publications on frequency of all citations that cite or are cited by the query articles. Materials and Methods: We aimed to reproduce the literature searches of published systematic reviews and meta-analyses (n=250) and assess whether CoCites retrieves all eligible articles while screening fewer titles. Results: CoCites retrieved a median of 75% of the articles that were included in the original reviews. The percentage of retrieved articles was higher (88%) when the query articles were cited more frequently and when they had more overlap in their citations. Applying CoCites to only the highest-cited article yielded similar results. The co-citation and citation searches combined were more efficient when the review authors had screened more than 500 titles, but not when they had screened less. Discussion: CoCites uses the expert knowledge of authors to rank related articles. The method does not depend on keyword selection and requires no special expertise to build search queries. The method is transparent and reproducible. Conclusion: CoCites is an efficient and accurate method for finding relevant related articles.
A critical review of robot research and future research opportunities: adopting a service ecosystem perspective
Purpose Given the recent growth of service robot research in hospitality and tourism management (HTM), the purpose of this study is to identify a research agenda by conducting a systematic and holistic review of service robot research published in both HTM and broader business management (BM) journals. Design/methodology/approach Adopting a service ecosystem perspective, 38 HTM articles and 13 highly cocited BM articles out of 126 BM articles were qualitatively reviewed to analyze the intellectual structures and foundations of robotics research. Findings The relationships between service robots and the four multilevel actors of the service ecosystem were analyzed: the consumer, employee, management and society. Twenty-eight specific research questions were proposed for the robotics-customer relationship, robotics-employee relationship, robotics-management relationship and robotics-society relationship. Research limitations/implications This study contributes to understanding the intellectual structures and evolution of rapidly growing HTM robotics research in terms of the holistic relationships among the four service ecosystem actors of robotics. Future research needs to identify other actors and their activities to examine the service ecosystem of robotics. Originality/value This study provides a pathway for future hospitality and tourism research by helping to focus on important robotics issues and further develop the theoretical and empirical knowledge of robotics. This work informs practitioners of key issues associated with the industrial adoption of robots.
A Co-Citation and Co-Word Analysis of Islamic Accounting and Accounting Research
Introduction:The study of conventional accounting has been a cornerstone in both academic research and practical business applications for many years. It provides a comprehensive framework for financial reporting, decision-making, and regulatory compliance, which is universally recognized and applied across various industries globally. This widespread adoption is attributed to its well-established principles, which have been refined and tested over time, making it a reliable foundation for managing financial affairs. Purpose:This article aims to provide the intellectual structure and evolution of Islamic Accounting and Accounting Research themes. Methodology:The authors utilized co-citation and co-word analysis to select 413 Islamic Accounting and Accounting from the Scopus database. The timeframe of the research encompasses articles published from 2010 through January 2024. Findings:The research findings can be concluded, firstly, countries that have a great interest in Islamic Accounting and Accounting include Malaysia, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom. New themes for future research directions by means of co-citation and joint word analysis are suggested. Prospects in Islamic accounting and accounting include 'technology and automation', 'big data', and 'regulatory reform', and 'nuclear fuel accounting'.
Bibliometric Analysis: The Main Steps
Bibliometric analysis is a systematic study carried out on scientific literature for the identification of patterns, trends, and impact within a certain field. Major steps include data collection from relevant databases, data cleaning and refining, and subjecting data to various bibliometric methods—an ensuing step in the generation of meaningful information. Bibliometric analysis is an increasingly popular and thorough technique for examining and assessing massive amounts of scientific data, which is being used more and more in research. This entry thoroughly introduces bibliometric methodology, emphasizing its numerous methodologies. It also provides a set of reliable, step-by-step instructions for confidently performing bibliometric analysis. Furthermore, we investigate the suitable use of bibliometric analysis as an alternative to systematic literature reviews. This entry aims to be a useful tool for learning about the methods and approaches that may be used to perform research studies that use bibliometric analysis, particularly in the fields of academic study.
Visualizing a field of research: A methodology of systematic scientometric reviews
Systematic scientometric reviews, empowered by computational and visual analytic approaches, offer opportunities to improve the timeliness, accessibility, and reproducibility of studies of the literature of a field of research. On the other hand, effectively and adequately identifying the most representative body of scholarly publications as the basis of subsequent analyses remains a common bottleneck in the current practice. What can we do to reduce the risk of missing something potentially significant? How can we compare different search strategies in terms of the relevance and specificity of topical areas covered? In this study, we introduce a flexible and generic methodology based on a significant extension of the general conceptual framework of citation indexing for delineating the literature of a research field. The method, through cascading citation expansion, provides a practical connection between studies of science from local and global perspectives. We demonstrate an application of the methodology to the research of literature-based discovery (LBD) and compare five datasets constructed based on three use scenarios and corresponding retrieval strategies, namely a query-based lexical search (one dataset), forward expansions starting from a groundbreaking article of LBD (two datasets), and backward expansions starting from a recently published review article by a prominent expert in LBD (two datasets). We particularly discuss the relevance of areas captured by expansion processes with reference to the query-based scientometric visualization. The method used in this study for comparing bibliometric datasets is applicable to comparative studies of search strategies.
Thinking inside the box? Intellectual structure of the knowledge base of innovation research (1988-2008)
Innovation is becoming increasingly popular as a concept as well as a field of research. As a field, it has accumulated a significant amount of scientific knowledge. Based on bibliometric data from four major social science disciplines—economics, sociology, psychology, and management—this study presents a 'global view' of the field by combining longitudinal and structural perspectives. It identifies major research traditions in the field, determines the content and disciplinary composition of each tradition, and maps the changes in the intellectual structure of the field over time. The study suggests that innovation research is becoming increasingly compartmentalized between economics and management disciplines and each segment is becoming increasingly self-contained. A strategy along with a framework is suggested for making research contribution to the field.
Mapping the Intellectual Structure of Social Entrepreneurship Research: A Citation/Co-citation Analysis
In this paper, we employ bibliometric analysis to empirically analyse the research on social entrepreneurship published between 1996 and 2017. By employing methods of citation analysis, document co-citation analysis, and social network analysis, we analyse 1296 papers containing 74,237 cited references and uncover the structure, or intellectual base, of research on social entrepreneurship. We identify nine distinct clusters of social entrepreneurship research that depict the intellectual structure of the field. The results provide an overall perspective of the social entrepreneurship field, identifying its influential works and analysing scholarly communication between these works. The results further aid in clarifying the overall centrality features of the social entrepreneurship research network. We also examine the integration of ethics into social entrepreneurship literature. We conclude with a discussion on the structure and evolution of the social entrepreneurship field.
Fifty years of the European Journal of Marketing: a bibliometric analysis
Purpose The European Journal of Marketing was created in 1967. In 2017, the journal celebrates its 50th anniversary. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to present a bibliometric overview of the leading trends of the journal during this period. Design/methodology/approach This work uses the Scopus database to analyse the most productive authors, institutions and countries, as well as the most cited papers and the citing articles. The investigation uses bibliometric indicators to represent the bibliographic data, including the total number of publications and citations between 1967 and 2017. Additionally, the article also develops a graphical visualization of the bibliographic material by using the visualization of similarities viewer software to map journals, keywords and institutions with bibliographic coupling and co-citation analysis. Findings British authors and institutions are the most productive in the journal, although Australians’ are growing significantly the number of papers published. Continental European institutions are also increasing the number of publications, but they are still far from reaching the British contribution so far. In the mid-term, however, these zone’s authors and institutions, especially those from big European countries like France, Germany, Italy and Spain, should reach a closer performance to British ones; more as less long, historic, but more recent periods of analysis are considered. Practical implications This article is useful for any reader of this journal to understand questions such as papers’ European Journal of Marketing-related scientific productivity in terms of, for instance, contributors/authors, institutions and countries, or the main sources used to back them. Originality/value This is the first comprehensive article offering a general overview of the leading trends and researchers of the journal over its history.
Citation-based clustering of publications using CitNetExplorer and VOSviewer
Clustering scientific publications in an important problem in bibliometric research. We demonstrate how two software tools, CitNetExplorer and VOSviewer, can be used to cluster publications and to analyze the resulting clustering solutions. CitNetExplorer is used to cluster a large set of publications in the field of astronomy and astrophysics. The publications are clustered based on direct citation relations. CitNetExplorer and VOSviewer are used together to analyze the resulting clustering solutions. Both tools use visualizations to support the analysis of the clustering solutions, with CitNetExplorer focusing on the analysis at the level of individual publications and VOSviewer focusing on the analysis at an aggregate level. The demonstration provided in this paper shows how a clustering of publications can be created and analyzed using freely available software tools. Using the approach presented in this paper, bibliometricians are able to carry out sophisticated cluster analyses without the need to have a deep knowledge of clustering techniques and without requiring advanced computer skills.
Identifying interdisciplinary topics and their evolution based on BERTopic
Interdisciplinary topic reflects the knowledge exchange and integration between different disciplines. Analyzing its evolutionary path is beneficial for interdisciplinary research in identifying potential cooperative research direction and promoting the cross-integration of different disciplines. However, current studies on the evolution of interdisciplinary topics mainly focus on identifying interdisciplinary topics at the macro level. More analysis of the evolution process of interdisciplinary topics at the micro level is still needed. This paper proposes a framework for interdisciplinary topic identification and evolutionary analysis based on BERTopic to bridge the gap. The framework consists of four steps: (1) Extract the topics from the dataset using the BERTopic model. (2) Filter out the invalid global topics and stage topics based on lexical distribution and further filter out the invalid stage topics based on topic correlation. (3) Identify interdisciplinary topics based on disciplinary diversity and disciplinary cohesion. (4) Analyze the interdisciplinary topic evolution by inspecting the intensity and content in the evolution, and visualize the evolution using Sankey diagrams. Finally, We conduct an empirical study on a dataset collected from the Web of Science (WoS) in Library & Information Science (LIS) to evaluate the validity of the framework. From the dataset, we have identified two distinct types of interdisciplinary topics in LIS. Our findings suggest that the growth points of LIS mainly exist in the interdisciplinary research topics. Additionally, our analysis reveals that more and more interdisciplinary knowledge needs to be integrated to solve more complex problems. Mature interdisciplinary topics mainly formed from the internal core knowledge in LIS stimulated by external disciplinary knowledge, while promising interdisciplinary topics are still at the stage of internalizing and absorbing the knowledge of other disciplines.
