A lovelorn son and a tragedy to chill every mother's heart
SURELY there cannot be one parent (especially of older children) who did not read about 16-yearold Alexander Codrington's suicide and think 'There but for the grace of God ...' HOW can you tell the young that the pain will pass? That in a few months the agony will have dulled? When you are young you live within the passing moment, experiencing every feeling in an intense way. Nobody (you believe) has ever felt this way before. That's why you yell, 'You don't understand!' at parents who (did you but know it) probably felt exactly the same, once. I've no doubt that Alexander's parents will always wonder if there was anything they could have done to avert the tragedy. As parents we always shoulder the blame, don't we? Proudly we allow our children their own triumphs but feel responsible for their disasters.
A lovelorn son and a tragedy to chill every mother's heart Eire Region
I can still recall her shaking shoulders as she sobbed: 'I will never be happy again.' As I stroked her head and murmured 'You will, my darling, you will', I knew no comfort from me could reach her. Her glass was empty. HOW can you tell the young that the pain will pass? That in a few months the agony will have dulled? When you are young you live within the passing moment, experiencing every feeling in an intense way. Nobody (you believe) has ever felt this way before. That's why you yell, 'You don't understand!' at parents who (did you but know it) probably felt exactly the same, once. When your child goes to school, you just know that one day other children will be mean, causing the heartbreaking wail, 'Mummy, they won't be my friends any more.' You don't want to let your kids out of your sight - but you have to. Giving them the freedom to grow is also, unfortunately, bestowing the freedom to suffer.
