Why we're taking our newborn baby back to Beirut
Cardiff-born Maurice Collis and his heavily-pregnant wife Lidia lived and worked in Beirut during the height of the conflict. They were preparing to celebrate their son William's fourth birthday when the bombs started to drop on July 13. The family checked into the Holiday Inn in Limassol, Cyprus, where they stayed for three days before flying to Cardiff. Since they arrived in Cardiff they have been staying with Mr Collis' mother in Cyncoed Road, and on August 26, Lidia gave birth to Julia- Megan. 'The people in the city of Beirut are wonderful and are trying to close the door on what's happened and rebuild their lives. We want to go back and pick up where we left off. 30 per cent withdrawal: Since the ceasefire of the 34-day conflict was called, Israeli forces have withdrawn from more than 80 per cent of Lebanese territory which was conquered, and handed it over to UN peacekeepers.
ROCK, B-MOVIES AND TRAFFIC TIE-UPS ARE MAKING INROADS ON BURMESE LIFE The Talk of Rangoon
''Ah, Maurice Collis,'' said a gray-haired Burmese to a browser at a bookstall here. ''I've read him for years. A British civil servant. 'Trials in Burma.' 'The Journey Outward,' et cetera.'' Pressing forward under a tarpaulin to avoid the rain, the elderly gentleman spotted a moldy volume in a stranger's hand. ''I believe he was still writing books in the 1960's,'' the Burmese said tentatively about Mr. Collis, a writer on Oriental subjects and an art critic, ''but I haven't read them yet.'' ''You know, I've been free for six years and now I move around freely, I go where I want, but I don't feel free,'' he said. The university has been quiet since the late 1970's. The field where the students took Mr. [U Thant]'s coffin is overgrown with weeds. ''That's the place,'' a Burmese said quietly, walking past the field. ''Don't move your head.''
