Red China's green revolution : technological innovation, institutional change, and economic development under the commune
China's dismantlling of the Mao-era rural commune system and return to individual household farming under Deng Xiaoping has been seen as a successful turn away from a misguided social experiment. Joshua Eisenman marshals previously inaccessible data to overturn this narrative, showing that the commune modernized agriculture, increased productivity, and spurred an agricultural green revolution that laid the foundation for China's future rapid growth. -- Provided by publisher.
Factores Asociados con las Memorias Evocadas por Tres Lugares de la Comuna de Concepción, Chile
The present investigation sought to determine the variables that influence the types of collective memories, typified as recall, manipulated memory, and forgetfulness, elicited by 3 places linked to the dictatorship (1973-1990) in Concepción, Chile. A descriptive, quantitative research design was used, with a non-probabilistic accidental sampling to access 287 participants according to sociodemographic categories, political orientation, and justification or not of the coup in Chile. The instrument was applied in 3 places, 2 considered memory places, the University of Concepción Memorial and the front of the Cathedral, and one place of forgetfulness, the former Bahamondes barracks. Chi-square, Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney post hoc with Bonferroni correction, and logistic regression analyses were performed. Recall memories predominated (47%), secondly, forgetfulness (37%), and finally, manipulated memories (16%). Recall memories were associated with being young, left-wing ( = 0.29), and rejecting the coup (Cramer's V = 0.18). Memory places were more associated with recall memories versus forgetfulness ( = 0.19). Recall memories were more frequent at the University of Concepción and less at the former Bahamondes barracks. The conclusions consider the relevance of promoting memory processes focused on recall in the face of the threat of oblivion.
Together by design : the art and architecture of communal living
A growing area in the sharing economy, intentional communities (co-living, communal living, and cohousing projects) are explored in this timely survey via architecture, public policy, sociology, and sustainability. In recent years, the Atlantic, Forbes, Time, and Curbed have reported on the growth of intentional communities-collective housing alternatives that initially gained popularity in the United States in the early 1990s and originated in Denmark in the 1960s. Featuring fifteen to twenty contemporary projects that address the challenges and benefits of shared resources and spaces, Intentional Communities addresses a growing population: according to the Pew Research Center, nearly one in three adults in the United States lives in a shared household. From Copenhagen to Washington, DC, this survey covers architecture, public policy, design, lifestyle, culture, and environmental sustainability.
The gulf
\"Ever since Oli found a pamphlet for a remote island commune as a kid, it's all she can think about. Now that she's nearing the end of high school, feeling frustrated with the mounting pressure to choose a career and follow a path she has no interest in, the desire to escape it all has been steadily increasing. Everything comes to a head when Oli's relationship with her best friend goes south and she claps back at a school bully with more than just words. Oli flees to find the commune on a Gulf Island off the coast of Vancouver, taking with her Milo, who can't help but hide his feelings behind the safety of a video camera, and Alvin, a shy teen who sees more than he lets on. Behind them trails Liam, Oli's ex-best-friend and sometimes love interest, who wants to apologize for the way things went down. All four are grappling with a world that cannot be changed ... and simply trying to find their place in it\"-- Amazon.com.
