Growth Targets Management, Regional Competition and Urban Land Green Use Efficiency According to Evidence from China
2022
Based on the panel data of 257 prefecture-level cities in China from 2010 to 2017, this paper measured urban land green use efficiency (ULGUE), incorporating undesirable outputs, via the super efficiency slack-based model (SBM). It also explored the effect, mechanism, and heterogeneity of growth targets management and regional competition on ULGUE via the time-varying gravitational spatial weight matrix and the spatial self-lagging model. The results show that growth targets management and regional competition have significant positive effects on ULGUE, and enhance the ULGUE by promoting local investment attraction, increasing innovation inputs, optimizing environmental regulations and strengthening commercial activities. Additionally, growth targets management has a more significant effect on eastern cities, non-central cities, and mature urban agglomeration, while regional competition has a more significant effect on central cities, non-central cities, and developmental urban agglomeration. Therefore, considering development as the priority, setting relatively aggressive economic growth targets and optimizing the regional competition mechanism for growth targets management can help improve the ULGUE and promote high-quality economic development in China.

Local firm upgrading in global value chains : a business model perspective
This book analyzes how a company can innovate and change its business model to the degree that it can climb up the value chain. The research synthesizes a combination of the global value chain and the business model literature to create a new framework of local firm upgrading. The findings of an empirical test of the model indicate that local firms are more than just a link within a global value chain. Each firm has a choice and inter-firm differences indicate that there is a strong firm level factor. Next to other factors, the founder is the key driver of local firm upgrading. He is possibly the most important element within a firm.

Mulching use in agriculture has been known since 1802 as the practice of spreading dry leaves and straw on the soil to prevent erosion and water loss. Our study evaluated the mulch effectiveness in the establishment of regenerating seedlings and its contribution to the control of exotic grasses. The studies were carried out in an ecological restoration area in the municipality of Itapira-SP. The treatment with mulching consisted in chemical desiccation with glyphosate herbicide application, keeping the dry grass on the ground. In the control treatment, after chemical weeding, the grass was removed with manual mowing, exposing the soil. Eight months after implantation, we sampled all regenerating seedlings in 100 plots of 50 x 50 cm in each treatment. We considered as seedlings all individuals of tree species less than 100 cm tall. We calculated richness, abundance, similarity, and the relationship of the frequency of seedlings to the height of the mulch. We sampled eight species with 42 seedlings, with only one not identified. The highest abundance and species richness were found in the treatment with mulch (n = 34 individuals; eight species), the most abundant being Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi (14 individuals) followed by Solanum mauritianum Scop. (11 individuals), and Platypodium elegans Vog. (three individuals). The presence of exotic grasses was lower in the plots of the mulching (13%) compared to the control treatment (67%). The highest frequency of seedlings was obtained with mulch height from 21 to 37 cm. We suggest that adaptive management practices, such as the use of the mulching technique, can be implemented in ecological restoration areas, because they favor the natural regeneration of native seedlings and can contribute to the control of exotic grasses, but the height of the layer must be controlled.

explores the effectiveness of development competitions as instruments to raise design quality. It suggests that the complexity of development competitions derives from their inherent tension between promoting creativity and financial viability. This cannot be resolved without careful and even‐handed management of the competition by the place promoter, who is usually a private‐ or public‐sector landowner. To encourage high quality design and ensure developer participation without wasting resources, place promoters should themselves take responsibility for masterplan preparation, stakeholder engagement and the provision of common technical information. Competitions should be informed by market realism, not burdensome rules and regulations. Place promoters also need to remember that developers are primarily interested in maximising short‐term receipts and should therefore ensure that this does not compromise the long‐term place quality sought by property users and investors. Competitions thus do not provide simple solutions to design challenges, but require careful thought and management to succeed.
