Scholarship in the Digital Age - Information, Infrastructure, and the Internet
2019
Scholars in all fields now have access to an unprecedented wealth of
online information, tools, and services. The Internet lies at the core of an
information infrastructure for distributed, data-intensive, and collaborative
research. Although much attention has been paid to the new technologies making this
possible, from digitized books to sensor networks, it is the underlying social and
policy changes that will have the most lasting effect on the scholarly enterprise.
In Scholarship in the Digital Age, Christine Borgman explores the
technical, social, legal, and economic aspects of the kind of infrastructure that we
should be building for scholarly research in the twenty-first
century.Borgman describes the roles that information technology
plays at every stage in the life cycle of a research project and contrasts these new
capabilities with the relatively stable system of scholarly communication, which
remains based on publishing in journals, books, and conference proceedings. No
framework for the impending \"data deluge\" exists comparable to that for
publishing. Analyzing scholarly practices in the sciences, social sciences, and
humanities, Borgman compares each discipline's approach to infrastructure issues. In
the process, she challenges the many stakeholders in the scholarly infrastructure --
scholars, publishers, libraries, funding agencies, and others -- to look beyond
their own domains to address the interaction of technical, legal, economic, social,
political, and disciplinary concerns. Scholarship in the Digital
Age will provoke a stimulating conversation among all who depend on a rich
and robust scholarly environment.

2010
Interconnecting Smart Objects with IP: The Next Internet explains why the Internet Protocol (IP) has become the protocol of choice for smart object networks. IP has successfully demonstrated the ability to interconnect billions of digital systems on the global Internet and in private IP networks. Once smart objects can be easily interconnected, a whole new class of smart object systems can begin to evolve. The book discusses how IP-based smart object networks are being designed and deployed. The book is organized into three parts. Part 1 demonstrates why the IP architecture is well suited to smart object networks, in contrast to non-IP based sensor network or other proprietary systems that interconnect to IP networks (e.g. the public Internet of private IP networks) via hard-to-manage and expensive multi-protocol translation gateways that scale poorly. Part 2 examines protocols and algorithms, including smart objects and the low power link layers technologies used in these networks. Part 3 describes the following smart object network applications: smart grid, industrial automation, smart cities and urban networks, home automation, building automation, structural health monitoring, and container tracking.
Shows in detail how connecting smart objects impacts our lives with practical implementation examples and case studies Provides an in depth understanding of the technological and architectural aspects underlying smart objects technology Offers an in-depth examination of relevant IP protocols to build large scale smart object networks in support of a myriad of new services
Cloud computing : theory and practice
2013
Cloud Computing: Theory and Practice provides students and IT professionals with an in-depth analysis of the cloud from the ground up.Beginning with a discussion of parallel computing and architectures and distributed systems, the book turns to contemporary cloud infrastructures, how they are being deployed at leading companies such as Amazon.

Energy conservation
2013,2012,2016
This book presents recent advances in green communications and networking for wired, wireless, and smart-grid networks. These technologies not only provide the emission reduction and energy savings in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) products and services, but also enable low GHG emissions in other industries, such as electric power. The text covers new algorithms, protocols, and network architectures to make cellular networks more energy efficient. It also includes a rich set of references in each chapter.
Understanding 5G Mobile Networks
2021
Understanding 5G Mobile Networks: A Multidisciplinary Primeroffers the first manageable overview of 5G for a non-technical audience, and specifically a broad, multidisciplinary survey of the spectrum and the licensing and launch of 5G networks throughout the world, distinguishing standalone 5G from non-standalone 5G.

Signal processing -- Digital techniques
2007
A wireless sensor network (WSN) uses a number of autonomous devices to cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions via a wireless network. Since its military beginnings as a means of battlefield surveillance, practical use of this technology has extended to a range of civilian applications including environmental monitoring, natural disaster prediction and relief, health monitoring and fire detection. Technological advancements, coupled with lowering costs, suggest that wireless sensor networks will have a significant impact on 21st century life. The design of wireless sensor networks requires consideration for several disciplines such as distributed signal processing, communications and cross-layer design. Wireless Sensor Networks: Signal Processing and Communications focuses on the theoretical aspects of wireless sensor networks and offers readers signal processing and communication perspectives on the design of large-scale networks. It explains state-of-the-art design theories and techniques to readers and places emphasis on the fundamental properties of large-scale sensor networks. Wireless Sensor Networks: Signal Processing and Communications : Approaches WSNs from a new angle – distributed signal processing, communication algorithms and novel cross-layer design paradigms. Applies ideas and illustrations from classical theory to an emerging field of WSN applications. Presents important analytical tools for use in the design of application-specific WSNs. Wireless Sensor Networks will be of use to signal processing and communications researchers and practitioners in applying classical theory to network design. It identifies research directions for senior undergraduate and graduate students and offers a rich bibliography for further reading and investigation.

Web applications
2017
Today, web applications are the most important type of software applications. This textbook shows how to design and implement them, using a model-based engineering approach that covers general information management concepts and techniques and the two most relevant technology platforms: JavaScript and Java. The book provides an in-depth tutorial for theory-underpinned and example-based learning by doing it yourself, supported by quiz questions and practice projects. Volume 1 provides an introduction to web technologies and model-based web application engineering, discussing the information management concepts of constraint-based data validation, enumerations and special datatypes. Volume 2 discusses the advanced information management concepts of associations and inheritance in class hierarchies. Web apps are designed using UML class diagrams and implemented with two technologies: JavaScript for front-end (and distributed NodeJS) apps, and Java (with JPA and JSF) for back-end apps. The six example apps discussed in the book can be run, and their source code downloaded, from the book's website. Gerd Wagner is Professor of Internet Technology at Brandenburg University of Technology, Germany, and Adjunct Associate Professor at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA, USA. He works in the areas of web engineering and modeling and simulation. Mircea Diaconescu is a Software Architect and Technical Team Leader at Entri GmbH, Berlin. He enjoys to work with the newest web technologies and to build Web of Things projects. Java, JavaScript/NodeJS and C# are his favorite programming languages.
