The Grassmann manifold of linear subspaces is important for the mathematical modelling of a multitude of applications, ranging from problems in machine learning, computer vision and image processing to low-rank matrix optimization problems, dynamic low-rank decompositions and model reduction. With this mostly expository work, we aim to provide a collection of the essential facts and formulae on the geometry of the Grassmann manifold in a fashion that is fit for tackling the aforementioned problems with matrix-based algorithms. Moreover, we expose the Grassmann geometry both from the approach of representing subspaces with orthogonal projectors and when viewed as a quotient space of the orthogonal group, where subspaces are identified as equivalence classes of (orthogonal) bases. This bridges the associated research tracks and allows for an easy transition between these two approaches. Original contributions include a modified algorithm for computing the Riemannian logarithm map on the Grassmannian that is advantageous numerically but also allows for a more elementary, yet more complete description of the cut locus and the conjugate points. We also derive a formula for parallel transport along geodesics in the orthogonal projector perspective, formulae for the derivative of the exponential map, as well as a formula for Jacobi fields vanishing at one point.

Persistence Curves: A canonical framework for summarizing persistence diagrams

Persistence diagrams are one of the main tools in the field of Topological Data Analysis (TDA). They contain fruitful information about the shape of data. The use of machine learning algorithms on the space of persistence diagrams proves to be challenging as the space lacks an inner product. For that reason, transforming these diagrams in a way that is compatible with machine learning is an important topic currently researched in TDA. In this paper, our main contribution consists of three components. First, we develop a general and unifying framework of vectorizing diagrams that we call the Persistence Curves (PCs), and show that several well-known summaries, such as Persistence Landscapes, fall under the PC framework. Second, we propose several new summaries based on PC framework and provide a theoretical foundation for their stability analysis. Finally, we apply proposed PCs to two applications—texture classification and determining the parameters of a discrete dynamical system; their performances are competitive with other TDA methods.

Partial differential equations (PDEs) are indispensable for modeling many physical phenomena and also commonly used for solving image processing tasks. In the latter area, PDE-based approaches interpret image data as discretizations of multivariate functions and the output of image processing algorithms as solutions to certain PDEs. Posing image processing problems in the infinite-dimensional setting provides powerful tools for their analysis and solution. For the last few decades, the reinterpretation of classical image processing problems through the PDE lens has been creating multiple celebrated approaches that benefit a vast area of tasks including image segmentation, denoising, registration, and reconstruction. In this paper, we establish a new PDE interpretation of a class of deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) that are commonly used to learn from speech, image, and video data. Our interpretation includes convolution residual neural networks (ResNet), which are among the most promising approaches for tasks such as image classification having improved the state-of-the-art performance in prestigious benchmark challenges. Despite their recent successes, deep ResNets still face some critical challenges associated with their design, immense computational costs and memory requirements, and lack of understanding of their reasoning. Guided by well-established PDE theory, we derive three new ResNet architectures that fall into two new classes: parabolic and hyperbolic CNNs. We demonstrate how PDE theory can provide new insights and algorithms for deep learning and demonstrate the competitiveness of three new CNN architectures using numerical experiments.

Color Image Analysis by Quaternion-Type Moments

In this paper, by using the quaternion algebra, the conventional complex-type moments (CTMs) for gray-scale images are generalized to color images as quaternion-type moments (QTMs) in a holistic manner. We first provide a general formula of QTMs from which we derive a set of quaternion-valued QTM invariants (QTMIs) to image rotation, scale and translation transformations by eliminating the influence of transformation parameters. An efficient computation algorithm is also proposed so as to reduce computational complexity. The performance of the proposed QTMs and QTMIs are evaluated considering several application frameworks ranging from color image reconstruction, face recognition to image registration. We show they achieve better performance than CTMs and CTM invariants (CTMIs). We also discuss the choice of the unit pure quaternion influence with the help of experiments.
