'Valedictorian' vanishing from grads' vocabularies ; After next week, Eden Prairie High School will no longer name valedictorians. It's the latest school to abandon the time-tested title in favor of a different honors system
2007
\"I'm not comfortable with this,\" [Nancy Nicklay] said. \"We have a lot of kids who focus on academics in this district.\" \"In the past, there might be students who weren't on that stage who took more rigorous courses than valedictorians and salutatorians,\" [Conn McCartan] said. \"This expands the number of kids that we can honor.\" \"I'm all for recognizing achievement and believe there are lots of valid reasons for doing so,\" [Thomas Guskey] said. \"But I also believe that the process requires that we define what excellence really means in terms of explicit, rigorous achievement criteria, rather than in terms of standing among classmates.\"

Religion's role in Iraq uncertain
2004
Some scholars think the mainstream American culture typically has had more influence on religion in the U.S. than vice versa. In Iraq, the opposite quite possibly could be the case. Dr. Francis Beckwith is the associate director of the J.M. Dawson Institute of Church- State Studies at Baylor University and thinks religion tends to do more adjusting to government than the other way around, at least in America. More than 200 years later, the \"wall\" and its metaphorical dimensions are still debatable. Now, as a war with marked religious undertones continues, and as federal lawmakers debate whether to define what constitutes marriage, separation of religion and government is hot again. In Iraq, it's bound to continue percolating until a semblance of stability is established.

Let's hear it for the netminders
2011
Vancouver Canucks' Roberto Luongo and the Boston Bruins' Tim Thomas treated fans to a classic goaltenders' duel as the Canucks took the opening game 1-0, with the lone goal coming in the final 20 seconds. Both goalies were among the game's three stars in Vancouver's 3-2 overtime win in Game 2. Ironically, [Ken Dryden] wasn't even the best goaltender in the playoffs that year, statistically, at least. That honour went to the Hawks' Tony Esposito, whose 2.19 goals-against average in the playoffs outshone Dryden's 3.00 figure. Much has been made of Thomas's advanced age -- 37 -- but he's just a kid compared to my first goaltending hero, Johnny Bower, who was 42 when he helped my beloved Toronto Maple Leafs win their last Stanley Cup in 1967. Bower shared the goaltending duties with 37-year-old Terry Sawchuck that year, posting an amazing 1.65 goals-against average in the four games he played. But it was Sawchuck who stepped in for the injured Bower and turned in some outstanding play as the Leafs upset the Canadiens in the finals that year.

Firefighters save teen, contain blaze at popular Auburn cafe
2000
\"She couldn't have gotten out by herself,\" [Dale Thomas] said. \"I couldn't have lifted that thing from underneath.\" \"It's going to hurt a lot,\" [Elly Ingersoll] said. \"[Kelly Conn]'s created about a third of the traffic down here.\" Auburn firefighters (above) douse a flare-up Monday afternoon inside the gutted Kelly's Cafe downtown. Cafe owner [Lance Conn] talks to an insurance adjuster Monday afternoon about the fire. A charred cash register, one of the few items Conn salvaged from the blaze, sits atop a steel plate firefighters removed to rescue a 17-year-old girl from the apartment below the cafe. 2 color photos of fire-destroyed cafe, PHOTOS BY [Larry Peirce]/Lincoln Journal Star color map of businesses of U.S. 75 (J Street), D.
