Healthcare facility design is a complex process that brings together diverse stakeholders and ideally aligns operational, environmental, experiential, clinical, and organizational objectives. The challenges inherent in facility design arise from the dynamic and complex nature of healthcare itself, and the growing accountability to the quadruple aims of enhancing patient experience, improving population health, reducing costs, and improving staff work life. Many healthcare systems and design practitioners are adopting an evidence-based approach to facility design, defined broadly as basing decisions about the built environment on credible and rigorous research and linking facility design to quality outcomes. Studies focused on architectural options and concepts in the evidence-based design literature have largely employed observation, surveys, post-occupancy study, space syntax analysis, or have been retrospective in nature. Fewer studies have explored layout optimization frameworks, healthcare layout modeling, applications of artificial intelligence, and layout robustness. These operations research/operations management approaches are highly valuable methods to inform healthcare facility design process in its earliest stages and measure performance in quantitative terms, yet they are currently underutilized. A primary objective of this paper is to begin to bridge this gap. This systematic review summarizes 65 evidence-based research studies related to facility layout and planning concepts published from 2008 through 2018, and categorizes them by methodology, area of focus, typology, and metrics of interest. The review identifies gaps in the existing literature and proposes solutions to advance evidence-based healthcare facility design. This work is the first of its kind to review the facility design literature across the disciplines of evidence-based healthcare design research, healthcare systems engineering, and operations research/operations management. The review suggests areas for future study that will enhance evidence-based healthcare facility designs through the integration of operations research and management science methods.

This article proposes the redesign of the electrical power and lighting network in an Ice Cream Parlor located in the city of Quito to ensure continuity in the electrical service and a luminous level according to the UNE 12464.1 Standard, established in the country. For this purpose, a survey of all the electrical load installed in the organization was carried out, where the nominal parameters of each equipment were identified with the help of the nameplate of each one of them. Using the specifications of the Ecuadorian Construction Standard (NEC) and the data obtained from the electrical load survey, five (5) circuits for outlets were proposed, considering a possible expansion of small equipment and the ten (10) maximum outlets established by the aforementioned standard. Additionally, four (4) circuits were proposed to feed the power load. With respect to the lighting network, the DIAlux software is used to determine the number of lamps, luminaires and their location to comply with the luminous level indicated. Therefore, it was necessary to propose six (6) circuits in order not to exceed the fifteen (15) lighting points established by the NEC. For each circuit, the following was calculated: conductor cross section, overcurrent protection, type of insulation and the diameter of the corresponding conduit to protect the conductors. Finally, quotations were made for the materials required for the implementation of the project. From these, an organization is selected, based on the availability of the necessary materials, their cost and accessibility, compared to other suppliers. The total amount of the proposal is US$2,518.24.

The impact of the international construction standard application capability on contractors’ competitiveness: Chinese contractors’ experience

The application capability of international construction standards (ICS) has become a necessary element for the success of contractors in the international market. However, there is a lack of quantitative analysis of the impact of ICS application capability on contractors’ competitiveness. This paper aims to explore the driving paths between them. The authors divided the competitiveness indicators into market performance indicators and image performance indicators and developed a standard application capability measurement scale based on five dimensions (knowledge learning, talent guarantee, technical support, relationship management and organization guarantee). Then, a structural equation model (SEM), in which project performance was regarded as a mediator variable, was established to investigate the path and intensity of ICS application capability on contractors’ competitiveness. A questionnaire was distributed to the project personnel of Chinese contractors engaged in international projects, and 174 valid questionnaires were collected. The results show that 1) relationship management and technical support have a direct driving effect on the competitiveness of contractors; 2) talent guarantees and organization guarantees affect contractors’ competitiveness through project performance. This study can remind contractors of the importance of the ICS application capability and the weakness of ICS application. Additionally, it will ultimately help contractors adjust their competitiveness strategies.
