About the Difficult Relationship Between the Polish Idea and the Polish Ethos in Contemporary Art. Marginalized Transcendentals, Critical De-coincidence, Intensive Dialogue, and Affirmative ‘Renewal’
2025
First, the text introduces the notion of the ‘Polish idea,’ which is presented as metaphys- icality in art and metaphysicality of art. In this context, the de-coincidence between the Polish idea and the Polish ethos can be perceived as criticism in contemporary art, as in the work of Artur Żmijewski. De-coincidence causing a ‘thrill of transcendence’ can be perceived as a threat, which Jerzy Bereś and Piotr Uklański warn against in their works. It can also reveal a ‘margin of transcendence’ (including that of the Polish idea), inspiring thereby innovative artistic explor-ations (Jakub Różalski, Jakub Woynarowski, Adu Karczmaczyk). They are pursued thanks to various forms of dialogue that revive affirmative views on ideas and the metaphysics of art.

Futures of the contemporary : contemporaneity, untimeliness, and artistic research
Futures of the Contemporary' explores different notions and manifestations of ?the contemporary? in music, visual arts, art theory, and philosophy. In particular, the authors in this collection of essays scrutinise the role of artistic research in critical and creative expressions of contemporaneity. When distinguished from ?the contemporaneous? of a given historical time, ?the contemporary? becomes a crucial concept, promoting or excluding objects and practices according to their ability to diagnose previously unnoticed aspects of the present. In this sense, the contemporary gains a critical function, involving particular modes of relating to history and one?s own time.0Written by major experts from fields such as music performance, composition, art theory, visual arts, art history, critical studies, and philosophy, this book offers challenging perspectives on contemporary art practices, the temporality of artistic works and phenomena, and new modes of problematising the production of art and its public apprehension.

No Sympathy for the Devil
2011,2013
In this cultural history of evangelical Christianity and popular music, David Stowe demonstrates how mainstream rock of the 1960s and 1970s has influenced conservative evangelical Christianity through the development of Christian pop music. For an earlier generation, the idea of combining conservative Christianity with rock--and its connotations of nonreligious, if not antireligious, attitudes--may have seemed impossible. Today, however, Christian rock and pop comprises the music of worship for millions of Christians in the United States, with recordings outselling classical, jazz, and New Age music combined.Shining a light on many of the artists and businesspeople key to the development of Christian rock, Stowe shows how evangelicals adapted rock and pop in ways that have significantly affected their religion's identity and practices. The chart-topping, spiritually inflected music created a space in popular culture for talk of Jesus, God, and Christianity, thus lessening for baby boomers and their children the stigma associated with religion while helping to fill churches and create new modes of worship. Stowe argues that, in the four decades since the Rolling Stones first unleashed their hit song \"Sympathy for the Devil,\" the increasing acceptance of Christian pop music by evangelicals ultimately has reinforced a variety of conservative cultural, economic, theological, and political messages.
Landscape into Eco Art
2018
Dedicated to an articulation of the earth from broadly ecological perspectives, eco art is a vibrant subset of contemporary art that addresses the widespread public concern with rapid climate change and related environmental issues. In Landscape into Eco Art, Mark Cheetham systematically examines connections and divergences between contemporary eco art, land art of the 1960s and 1970s, and the historical genre of landscape painting.
Through eight thematic case studies that illuminate what eco art means in practice, reception, and history, Cheetham places the form in a longer and broader art-historical context. He considers a wide range of media—from painting, sculpture, and photography to artists' films, video, sound work, animation, and installation—and analyzes the work of internationally prominent artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Nancy Holt, Mark Dion, and Robert Smithson. In doing so, Cheetham reveals eco art to be a dynamic extension of a long tradition of landscape depiction in the West that boldly enters into today's debates on climate science, government policy, and our collective and individual responsibility to the planet.
An ambitious intervention into eco-criticism and the environmental humanities, this volume provides original ways to understand the issues and practices of eco art in the Anthropocene. Art historians, humanities scholars, and lay readers interested in contemporary art and the environment will find Cheetham's work valuable and invigorating.
