A Commentary on Opportunities for the Genetic Counseling Profession through Genomic Variant Interpretation: Reflections from an Ex-Lab Rat
2018
The genetic counseling profession continues to expand and respond to the changing landscape of genomic medicine. “Non-traditional” genetic counseling roles have become more commonplace and the transferability of the genetic counselor skill set has been widely acknowledged, particularly in genetic laboratory settings. As these expanding roles continue to mature, all genetic counselors can benefit by learning and adopting clinically relevant skills, such as genomic variant interpretation, which can be applied to direct patient care. These skills can enrich our patients’ understanding of their test results, help ensure quality patient care, and could be useful in positioning genetic counselors as critical members in the medical team as we continue to fully transition into the genomic medicine era.

Counselling Knowledge and Skills in Papua New Guinea: Identifying the Gaps
2021
This paper reports on the counselling knowledge and skills held and utilised by Papua New Guinean counsellors. Twenty-five counsellors from government and non-government sectors, representing all four regions of PNG, participated in individual in-depth interviews and video-recorded simulated counselling sessions. Counselling knowledge was assessed via content analysis of interview data that explored counselling concepts associated with the purpose and practice of counselling. Skills were assessed via the Counselling Skills and Competencies Tool. Results indicated that participants had low levels of counselling knowledge and skills. The paper outlines three key areas that should be the focus of counselling training for PNG counsellors: (1) fundamental knowledge and skills, (2) theories and frameworks for guiding the counselling process, and (3) the PNG cultural context.

Integrating video-modeling into counseling skills and techniques course and its impact on counseling self-efficacy
2022
Counselor education requires a comprehensive curriculum including entry-level courses as counseling skills and techniques which foster students’ basic knowledge in counseling and perceived counseling self-efficacy (CSE). Counselor candidates are provided opportunities to observe skills and techniques in practice through video modeling (VM) as one of the most favored teaching methods. The use of VM is not a common method in counselor training in Turkey; therefore, first aim of the current study was to investigate how VM-integrated counseling skills and techniques course affected students’ perceived counseling techniques efficacy and CSE. The second aim was to gain a deeper understanding of the use of VM as a teaching method in this course. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was used. The research setting of the current study was the undergraduate counseling skills and techniques course that integrated 10 previously developed short videos about counseling techniques or processes. There were 41 third-year students enrolled in this course who participated in the study (quantitative phase). Seven voluntary students (out of 41) participated in the focus group (qualitative phase). The paired samples t-test was applied to analyze the effectiveness of VM and the content analyses were conducted to examine qualitative data. Results showed that the VM-integrated course increased students’ perceived efficacy in using techniques and general CSE. Results of the focus group were categorized under four themes and provided critical insights to better understand the factors leading to increased self-efficacy. The results of this study were discussed in the light of previous literature on counselor education.

Research on counselors-in-training is necessary to improve the success of the counseling process. The counseling skills used by counselors are critical to managing this process. This paper aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge in counseling pedagogy by examining the role of counselor characteristics as a mediator in the relationship between counselors-in-training values and counseling skills. In this study, we had 524 counselors-in-training from various universities in Turkey. The results showed that the values of counselors-in-training significantly predict their counselor characteristics. Specifically, the values of the counselors-in-training predict their counseling skills, with the mediating role of the counselor characteristics. Additionally, the counselor characteristics of the counselors-in-training significantly predicted their counseling skills. Various practices and methods can be applied to improve counseling skills. Given that the development of values allows counselors-in-training to acquire important counselor characteristics, value education is essential in the training of counselors. Individuals who acquire essential counselor characteristics can use their counseling skills effectively.

Effect of an Emotional Intelligence Training Program Developed for Prospective Psychological Counselors on Psychological Counseling Skill Levels
2020
The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of an emotional intelligence training program for prospective psychological counselors on psychological counseling skills. The study group for the research comprised 28 prospective psychological counselors attending the guidance and psychological counseling department of a state university who volunteered to participate in the study. The research used a semi-experimental pattern with pretest, posttest and control group. The 2 × 3 split-plot included the first factor with independent process groups of the experimental and control group (14 students each), while the second factor included the repeated measures related to the dependent variables (pretest, posttest, follow-up). The personal information form and Microcounseling Skill Discrimination Scale were used as data collection tools. Analyses were completed with IBM SPSS program. According to the results obtained, for the experimental group there were significant differences identified between the pretest points and posttest and follow-up test points, while there was no statistically significant difference found between the posttest and follow-up measures. In line with this, it was concluded that the emotional intelligence training program was an effective program to develop the psychological counseling skills of prospective psychological counselors and this change continued 1 month after the treatment.
