Ludovico Domenichi's La donna di corte and the Paradoxical Representation of Female Perfection
2023
Having dealt with the womanly virtues and what they share with male virtues in his work La nobilta delle donne (1549), Ludovico Domenichi focuses in La donna di corte (1564) on the amorous behaviour of a specific type of woman: the palace lady, the harmonious counterpart to the courtier. In this article, I analyze the underlying ambiguity of Domenichi's message. Making an effort to defend the perfection of women without being highly critical of men, Domenichi suggests that the emancipation implied by the public role of court entertainment is in fact constantly controlled through an education based on pudicitia and honesta. He has no intention of changing either the social order or the role of women.

This tutorial provides an introduction to Palm distributions for spatial point processes. Initially, in the context of finite point processes, we give an explicit definition of Palm distributions in terms of their density functions. Then we review Palm distributions in the general case. Finally, we discuss some examples of Palm distributions for specific models and some applications.

Patronage and Humanist Literature in the Age of the Jagiellons

2007
Every epoch has its artists, thinkers, and creators, and behind many of these people, there is a patron waiting in the wings. Patronage and Humanist Literature in the Age of the Jagiellons looks at the relationship between humanist scholars and their patrons in east central Europe during the early sixteenth century. It is the first study in English specifically to address literary patronage as it existed in this particular time and place.
Drawing on the writings of three itinerant scholar-poets associated with the courts of Cracow, Buda, and Vienna, Jacqueline Glomski argues that, even while they supported the imperial pretensions of the Jagiellonian monarchs, the humanist scholars of east central Europe also created effective propaganda for themselves by representing their own role in the conferring of fame upon their patrons. Using a wide array of source material, from dedicatory letters to panegyric and political literature, Glomski describes how important patronage was to the scholar-poets, and analyzes the process by which conventions of Renaissance humanism spread across Europe.
Patronage and Humanist Literature in the Age of the Jagiellons is an insightful historic account that is accessible to anyone interested in patronage at the time of the European Renaissance.

Web-Based Survival Analysis Tool Tailored for Medical Research (KMplot): Development and Implementation
2021
Background: Survival analysis is a cornerstone of medical research, enabling the assessment of clinical outcomes for disease progression and treatment efficiency. Despite its central importance, no commonly used spreadsheet software can handle survival analysis and there is no web server available for its computation. Objective: Here, we introduce a web-based tool capable of performing univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards survival analysis using data generated by genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, or metabolomic studies. Methods: We implemented different methods to establish cut-off values for the trichotomization or dichotomization of continuous data. The false discovery rate is computed to correct for multiple hypothesis testing. A multivariate analysis option enables comparing omics data with clinical variables. Results: We established a registration-free web-based survival analysis tool capable of performing univariate and multivariate survival analysis using any custom-generated data. Conclusions: This tool fills a gap and will be an invaluable contribution to basic medical and clinical research.
