\"Children learn from physical stimulation, from really seeing what to do,\" said Fire Marshal Craig Haney, who helped unveil the mobile home at [Barger] on Tuesday. \"It'll be great to concentrate our efforts (in fire safety education) with what we have here and see what we'll be able to do with it.\" The safety house, along with a new van to tow it and its two robotic mascots, Sparky the Dalmatian and Freddy the fire engine, cost more than $100,000, Mr. Haney said. The package was bought recently with homeland security grant money supplemented by city funds, he said. SCITS student Mike Commeau, a defensive tackle with the Lambton Lions junior football team, was a member of Team Ontario which won gold at the Canada Cup at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa. Team Ontario won the national title for a third straight year beating Team Alberta 21- 18 in overtime in the championship game on a 37-yard field goal by Sean Harvey. SCITS alumnus Craig Haney finished ninth in his age category (age 24-29) at the World Long Course Triathlon championships held in Sater, Sweden. Haney, a kinesiology graduate from Western who now resides in Kitchener (where he operates a fitness centre), completed the race in six hours, 58 minutes, 44 seconds. The long course includes a four kilometre swim (1:06.52), 120 kilometre bike ride (3:29.18) plus a 30 kilometre run (2:19.28). Earlier in the summer he won a triathlon in Parry Sound and would like to compete in the Bluewater Triathlon in Bright's Grove but is unable to do so because of a friend's wedding. Haney also has one Ironman triathlon on his resume. Matt Hill of the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club played in the U.S. Junior championships in San Francisco, earlier this week. Although he missed the cut, it was an amazing accomplishment to qualify for the tournament. Very few Sarnians have ever competed and this year Hill was only one of two to make the final field of 156 golfers. At present, the SGCC has the most amazing collection of junior golfers that Sarnia has seen since a great crop in the late-80s.
Superb debut
Craig Haney, a 25-year-old Sarnian, participated in the Canadian Ironman triathlon in Penticton, British Columbia.
Education, equipment reduce fire fatalities
\"It's just so tragic every time (a fire) happens,\" Ms. [Claudia Moore] said. \"It's folks that are living on the edge, at the poverty level or below. So it's really important to get that information to them.\" \"The 2008 holiday season and the start of 2009 may be recorded as one of the deadliest for residential fires in recent memory of the fire service,\" U.S. Fire Administrator Greg Cade said in a news release. \"Not only has there been a significant number of preventable fires, but the occurrences of multiple fatalities resulting from these fires are simply unacceptable within our nation. There should be a smoke alarm protecting every person in this nation today, particularly as we sleep.\" \"We see it every year, and we tell people every year, 'Watch where your heaters are sitting,'\" he said. \"Every chance we get, we will talk about something new.\"

Fire marshal pushing for new sprinkler codes
\"We're a big proponent of sprinkling buildings,\" Fire Marshal Craig Haney said. \"It saves property, saves lives.\" \"It hasn't been presented to us yet,\" committee Chairman Jack Benson said. \"I've heard just casual conversations about it.\" \"It's just an added cost for safety and, as every construction project goes, you put that cost into your projections,\" he said. \"I think the grandfathering in is a good thing. I think it's a good idea (to put in sprinklers) for new construction.\" \"We had some pretty significant fires like the MGM hotel fire in Las Vegas in 1980, and that was kind of the threshold event,\" he said. \"Over the years, we saw where sprinklers could have probably made a difference.\"
