When Ethics Was of Little Concern to Medical Practice. (Re)Discovering Cronin
2022
A. J. Cronin was a Scottish-born physician-turned-novelist whose professional experience undoubtedly left a mark on his literary works. The first half of the 20th century was a period of uncertainties in medical sciences, lack of standardised practice, the absence of guidelines for the treatment of various diseases, and, sometimes, scarcity of ethical guidelines in healthcare research or medical practice. A connoisseur of the British medical system, Cronin was able to identify its flaws and transpose them into his literary output. His novel The Citadel was screened a few months after the publication. This paper aims to identify and discuss some of the ethical problems that The Citadel motion picture of 1938 portrays.

James Cronin (1931–2016)
2016
For decades, physicists have puzzled over why the Universe contains more matter than antimatter - essentially, how it is that we are here. It was expected that particles of matter and antimatter would mutually destruct. A major step towards the answer came from an experiment in which James (Jim) Cronin and Val Fitch, along with two other colleagues, showed that an elementary particle, called a neutral kaon, decayed in an unexpected manner. For their discovery, Cronin and Fitch received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1980.

James W. Cronin (1931-2016)
2016
A Nobel laureate raised the profile of physics worldwide James W. Cronin, who shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1980 with Val L. Fitch for the discovery of an unexpected breakdown in the symmetries of charge (C) and parity (P), died on 25 August 2016. Their work help explain the conundrum as to why there is more matter than antimatter in the universe. An outstanding experimentalist and gifted data analyst, Cronin's talents led to major discoveries in the fields of particle and cosmic-ray physics.

Archibald Joseph Cronin: a Writing-Doctor Between Literature and Film
2017
This paper broaches the subject of the life and numerous cinematographic and TV adaptations of the vast and controversial literary work of Scottish doctor Archibald Joseph Cronin (1896-1981). Through it, we intend to stress the influence his books and/or the films based on them had on many young generations who, under their shelter, chose a career in medicine. Prize-winning writer and PhD, in his works -formally adorned with his great talent for description and observation- he intermingles naturalism, conflicting passions, medical situations and social criticism. Beyond all discussion about his literary career and his repercussion on film, his influence on those who embraced Medicine following in the steps of his characters, many of whom were nothing more than a reflection of himself, is unquestionable.

Towards a Poetics of Detachment: The Role of Nostalgia in Patrick Kavanagh’s Christmas Poems (1939-1943)
2025
Between 1939 and 1943, Patrick Kavanagh wrote a series of poems around the theme of Christmas that set forth the enabling role of nostalgia in the transmission of hope in times of trouble. Commonly experienced as a longing for the past, nostalgia appears as a natural emotional response to pain (algos) engendered by angst, insecurity, and displacement. In Kavanagh’s poems, the theme of nostalgia is mainly explored through the lens of a “lost home”, often associated with life in the countryside, childhood, and a deep sense of belonging. This inclination towards a return (nostos) is triggered on the one hand by the turmoil of a global historical context with the effects of “The Emergency” on Irish society, and on the other hand by the poet’s personal context while struggling to adapt to life in Dublin. Using Christmas as a symbol of transition and renewal, the poems thus bridge the personal and collective imaginary. The poetic devices used to transfigure reality reveal how nostalgia provides perspective and distance to foster a return to simplicity and acceptance of reality, beyond mere idealisation. It also ultimately contributes to the transmission of hope and appears as a key aspect in Kavanagh’s poetics of care and detachment.
