DON'T LOOK DOWN
Mark Hetzler, professor of trombone at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is notable for the ingenuity and iconoclastic nature of his albums, often employing electronics and unique extended techniques to enhance his musical product. [...]from the liner notes, Dont Look Down was composed in January 2019 as a reaction to the building fatigue, anxiety, and gloom the three of us were sensing in society and among our colleagues, students, friends, and family-even before the momentous events of 2020 Though composed before the events of 2020, Dont Look Down eerily foreshadows struggles faced worldwide throughout that year. Each movement is intended to illustrate a specific moment in a day, whether that be the ethereal, floating texture of Open Your Eyes (or its recap in Momentum is Bruising), the boisterous, chaotic trio of Vicious World, or the overwhelming white noise of Noise Signal I with its resolution and clarity in Noise Signal II.
