The Invention of Tradition
Many of the traditions which we think of as very ancient in their origins were not in fact sanctioned by long usage over the centuries, but were invented comparatively recently. This book explores examples of this process of invention – the creation of Welsh and Scottish 'national culture'; the elaboration of British royal rituals in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the origins of imperial rituals in British India and Africa; and the attempts by radical movements to develop counter-traditions of their own. It addresses the complex interaction of past and present, bringing together historians and anthropologists in a fascinating study of ritual and symbolism which poses new questions for the understanding of our history.

The major purpose of this book is to illustrate and explain the fundamental similarities and correspondences between humankind's oldest and newest thought-technologies: oral tradition and the Internet. Despite superficial differences, both technologies are radically alike in depending not on static products but rather on continuous processes, not on \"What?\" but on \"How do I get there?\" In contrast to the fixed spatial organization of the page and book, the technologies of oral tradition and the Internet mime the way we think by processing along pathways within a network. The aim of this overview study is to bring basic information on the system of safeguarding of selected elements of the intangible cultural heritage with an emphasis on the designation of products, while taking into account the geographical indication. It explains the current state related to the historical process of the origins and granting of protected designation to selected products in the former Czechoslovakia, in the Slovak Republic and the European Union. The study builds on the legal frameworks and definitions that are harmonised with industrial property protection, and observes the links between the categories of industry, intellectual property, and cultural heritage. For experts specialised in the safeguarding of the cultural heritage, it is important to know the historical development of this type of protection and its geopolitical dimension. They can thus analyse the strategies, functionality, and the impacts of safeguarding on the development of protected designations in the field of traditional folk culture and its functioning in society.
