Theorising democide : why and how democracies fail
The common assumption is that the path to democratisation is, once begun, near impossible to reverse. Particularly where democratic transition has been properly consolidated conventional wisdom and empirical evidence both suggest that no democracy should follow the example of Classical Athens or Germany's Weimar Republic and return to despotism. Starting from the premise that democracies are often deeply implicated in their own downfall, \"Theorising Democide\" challenges this conventional view by showing how democratic collapse is symptomatic of the inherent logic of democracy. Democide, in some cases, can thus be understood as a kind of ideological suicide with the tenets and devices of democracy being somehow intrinsic to its own collapse. In other words democide denotes the capacity that democracy has to come undone, to risk its own safety, to take its own life while doing what it was intended to do.

Democratization
2024
This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the ongoing challenges face in Portuguese justice system. Over the past two decades, the Portuguese justice system has witnessed a series of significant reforms, each aimed at addressing the evolving needs of society, improving efficiency, and enhancing accessibility. This article pretends to provide valuable insights into the impact of justice reforms, its challenges, and the path forward. Methodologically, in order to fulfill our objectives a mixed analysis was used. Firstly, we analyzed the reforms implemented by the Portuguese government from 2002 to 2022. Posteriorly, we used descriptive statistics to assess if those reforms had a significant and desirable impact on the court's performance indicators. The results led to the conclusion that the Portuguese reform process is marked by twists and turns caused by the lack of coherent planning. Performance indicators have evolved in a more fruitful direction; however, they have not yet reached the desirable values, and many reforms have not been able to fulfil their expectations.

Do Authentic Leadership and Transformational Leadership Promote LMX in a Context of Political Instability?: Case of Tunisian Companies
2021
In a context of change, the literature highlights the importance of both transformational and authentic leadership styles in maintaining the quality of the relationship between leaders and followers. To the authors' knowledge, no research has addressed this relationship in a context of political instability. So, this research seeks to study the influence of both transformational and authentic leadership styles on LMX in a period of political instability. The objective is to know whether these two styles of leadership remain effective in a context of democratic transition. To this end, a quantitative approach is adopted. A questionnaire was distributed to 126 managers belonging to industrial firms in Tunisia. Unlike the literature, authentic leadership does not influence the LMX. The latter is partially influenced by transformational leadership. Therefore, it is important to consider other factors such as political skills in order to maintain the quality of LMX in a situation of political instability.

Disenfranchising democracy : constructing the electorate in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France
\"The first wave of democratization in the United States - the removal of property and taxpaying qualifications for the right to vote - was accompanied by the disenfranchisement of African American men, with the political actors most supportive of the former also the most insistent upon the latter. The United States is not unique in this respect: other canonical cases of democratization also saw simultaneous expansions and restrictions of political rights, yet this pattern has never been fully detailed or explained. Through case studies of the USA, the UK, and France, Disenfranchising Democracy offers the first cross-national account of the relationship between democratization and disenfranchisement. It develops a political institutional perspective to explain their co-occurrence, focusing on the politics of coalition-building and the visions of political community coalitions advance in support of their goals. Bateman sheds new light on democratization, connecting it to the construction of citizenship and cultural identities\"-- Provided by publisher.
The Current Political Challenges to the Mexican Democratisation Process
2019
This paper will attempt to answer what the current state of contemporary democracy in Mexico is after the return of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) to the presidency by analysing the role of Civil Society, Political Society and the Rule of Law from 2012 to 2018. This paper will also explore if the party’s return was indeed a step backwards in the process of Mexican democratisation, or whether it was simply another step on a long road in which the various political parties alternate power. In 2018, Mexico elected its new president for the next consecutive 6 years along with a fair number of congressional seats and local gubernatorial posts, an election that again put Mexican democracy through a difficult test.
