The embodiment of power as upward/downward movement in Chinese-English bilinguals

Using an action compatibility task, we investigated whether POWER is embodied in terms of upward and downward movement in two languages (first and dominant language: Chinese; second language: English). Chinese-English bilinguals were asked to quickly and accurately categorize power-related words (e.g., “boss,” “intern”) as “powerful” or “powerless.” The response to indicate that the word was “powerful” required an upward movement in the compatible condition, while the response to indicate “powerless” involved a downward movement. These responses were reversed in the incompatible condition (“powerful”-downward/“powerless”-upward). When the response actions were compatible rather than incompatible, participants were faster to categorize the words. Furthermore, the action compatibility effect was observed in both languages, but surprisingly the action compatibility effect was larger in their L2. The findings support the psychological reality of the “POWER IS UP” conceptual metaphor that is active when participants process language in both their primary and secondary languages.

Aortic Root Downward Movement as a Novel Method for Identification of an Adequately Performed Valsalva Maneuver to Detect Patent Foramen Ovale during Transesophageal Echocardiography

The Valsalva maneuver (VM) is the most sensitive auxiliary method for the detection of patent foramen ovale (PFO), but it is difficult to assess whether the maneuver is adequately performed during transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). In this study, we tried to use aortic root downward movement as a novel method for judging whether VM was adequate or not, and to evaluate whether this novel method can increase the sensitivity of detecting PFO. A total of 224 patients with clinically suspected PFO were enrolled in this study. These patients were injected with activated normal saline to detect the right-to-left shunt (RLS), in the following three conditions: contrast-enhanced transthoracic echocardiography under adequate VM (AVM cTTE), contrast-enhanced TEE under non-adequate VM (non-AVM cTEE), and cTEE under adequate VM (AVM cTEE). A novel method in which the aorta root moves downward (movement range ≥16 mm) in the cTEE judged whether AVM was performed. The PFO detection rate and sensitivity of AVM cTEE were better than that of non-AVM cTEE (detection rate: 108 PFOs [48.2%] vs. 86 PFOs [38.4%], p = 0.036; sensitivity: 100% vs. 79.6%). Among AVM cTTE, non-AVM cTEE, and AVM cTEE, the RLS grade evaluation results were inconsistent, with significant differences (p < 0.05). Non-AVM cTEE had RLS underestimation or false negatives. Compared with non-AVM cTEE, AVM cTEE and AVM cTTE had better consistency in evaluating PFO RLS (kappa value = 0.675). Aortic root downward movement could be used as a novel method for judging the effectiveness of VM, which is critical for the detection of PFO in cTEE. Concerning effectiveness and convenience, this method should be promoted during the clinical detection of PFO.

High levels of pesticide use are associated with intensive crop production. Pesticides are increasingly prevalent in surface and groundwater, which is a major environmental concern. Various methods have been proposed to improve the retention and/or degradation of pesticides in soils. These methods are mainly based on soil adaptation with organic wastes to mitigate soil and water pollution. In addition, there has recently been increased interest in assessing the influence of organic waste additions on pesticide movement in soils with low contents of organic matter. Agriculture and related industries generate large amounts of waste each year. Because of their components, they have the great ability to produce high-value products for environmental restoration. This study reports on the influence of four different agro-industrial wastes (orange peel, beer bagasse, grape pomace, and gazpacho waste) used as organic amendments on the leaching of metobromuron and chlorbromuron (phenylurea herbicides) on a silty clay loam soil (gypsic–calcaric regosol) with low organic matter contents from a semiarid area (southeastern Spain). The adsorption, leaching, and dissipation processes of these herbicides were evaluated on a laboratory scale in amended and unamended soils. In addition, the main leaching indices (GUS, LIX, LEACH, M LEACH, LIN, GLI, HI, and ELI) commonly used to assess groundwater protection against pesticide pollution were evaluated. The sorption coefficients (KOC) increased in the amended soils. Metobromuron was found in leachates in all cases, although a marked reduction was observed in amended soils, while chlorbromuron was mainly retained in soils, especially in the top layer. The disappearance time (DT50) for metobromuron and chlorbromuron in soil ranged from 11 to 56 d and 18 to 95 d, respectively. All indices except GLI categorize metobromuron as mobile or very mobile in unamended soil. For chlorbromuron, GUS, LIX, LEACH, MLEACH, and Hornsby classify this compound as a medium-to-high leache, while GLI and ELI classify it as having low mobility. In amended soils, most indices classify metobromuron as transitioning to mobile, while most indices catalog chlorbromuron as immobile/transition.

FLRT3 Marks Direction-Selective Retinal Ganglion Cells That Project to the Medial Terminal Nucleus

The mammalian retina extracts a multitude of diverse features from the visual scene such as color, contrast, and direction of motion. These features are transmitted separately to the brain by more than 40 different retinal ganglion cell (RGC) subtypes. However, so far only a few genetic markers exist to fully characterize the different RGC subtypes. Here, we present a novel genetic Flrt3-CreERT2 knock-in mouse that labels a small subpopulation of RGCs. Using single-cell injection of fluorescent dyes in Flrt3 positive RGCs, we distinguished four morphological RGC subtypes. Anterograde tracings using a fluorescent Cre-dependent Adeno-associated virus (AAV) revealed that a subgroup of Flrt3 positive RGCs specifically project to the medial terminal nucleus (MTN), which is part of the accessory optic system (AOS) and is essential in driving reflex eye movements for retinal image stabilization. Functional characterization using ex vivo patch-clamp recordings showed that the MTN-projecting Flrt3 RGCs preferentially respond to downward motion in an ON-fashion. These neurons distribute in a regular pattern and most of them are bistratified at the level of the ON and OFF bands of cholinergic starburst amacrine cells where they express the known ON-OFF direction-selective RGC marker CART. Together, our results indicate that MTN-projecting Flrt3 RGCs represent a new functionally homogeneous AOS projecting direction-selective RGC subpopulation.

Valorization of Organic Wastes to Reduce the Movement of Priority Substances Through a Semiarid Soil

In this work, we examined the effect of two different organic wastes, composted sheep manure and coir, on the sorption, persistence, and mobility of three pesticides (alachlor, chlorfenvinphos, and chlorpyrifos) included as priority substances in European Directive 2013/39/EU. With this aim, leaching studies were conducted using disturbed soil columns filled with a typical agricultural soil (hipercalcic calcisol) from a semiarid area (southeastern Spain) to determine their potential for groundwater pollution. The three compounds were found in leachates of unamended soil although in different proportions: 53% (alachlor), 9% (chlorfenvinphos), and 6% (chlorpiryfos). The addition of organic wastes significantly increased the sorption of the studied pesticides. As a consequence, the half-lives of the studied pesticides were higher in amended than in unamended soils. A marked reduction of the amount recovered in leachates was observed in the amended soils, except for chlorpiryfos, whose recoveries barely changed. According to their potential groundwater pollution calculated as the groundwater ubiquity score (GUS) index, alachlor and chlorfenvinphos show medium leachability while chlorpiryfos is unlikely to leach.

Stress avoidance: vertical movement of entomopathogenic nematodes in response to soil moisture gradient

. Infective juveniles (IJs) were applied to the surface of moist (11–13% w/w moisture) sandy soil in buckets. Nematode distribution was monitored at different depths 3, 14 and 28 days after application. In uncovered buckets, soil moisture decreased to 1% in the upper 5-cm layer after 28 days.

IJs abandoned the upper soil layers as dryness intensified with >80% found in the bottom (20–25 cm) layer. In contrast, >70%

To analyze the relationship between eccentric downward eye movement/eccentric downward eye-positioning (EDEM/EDEP) encountered in patients undergoing ophthalmic surgeries and its return to a centralized position under general anesthesia (GA) with the depth of anesthesia (DOA).
Patients undergoing ophthalmic surgeries (6 months-12 years) under sevoflurane anesthesia without non-depolarizing muscle relaxant (NDMR) who witnessed a sudden tonic EDEM/EDEP were both retrospectively (R-group) and prospectively (P-group) enrolled (ambispective study). R-group included data-points after induction (AI) till the time surgery lasted while P-group compiled data both during induction (DI) and AI. DOA in terms of MAC (minimum alveolar concentration) at the time of EDEM/EDEP and centralization of eyeball and their timings were noted and compared for both AI and DI data-points. Also, vertical eccentric eye positions were scored and correlated with MAC.
AI data included 22 (14R+8P) events and their mean MAC of EDEM/EDEP and centralization were 1.60 ± 0.25 and 1.18 ± 0.17 respectively (
= 0.000). DI data included 62 (P) cases and its mean MAC of EDEM/EDEP and centralization was 2.19 ± 0.43 and 1.39 ± 0.26 respectively (
= 0.000). Median (IQR) eye positions during down-positioning in 84 events was -3 (-3.9 to -2.5). It was preceded by an eccentric upward drift of eyes in 10/22 (6R+4P) AI cases. A strong negative correlation was seen between DOA and eccentric eye positions (
= -0.77,
= 0.000).
Tonic down-rolling of eyes is not uncommon in children seen without NDMR with higher depths of sevoflurane anesthesia compared to point of centralization and fluctuations in DOA should be avoided to circumvent inadvertent complications during ocular surgery.

Long-term effects of nitrogen fertilizer use on ground water nitrate in two small watersheds

Changes in agricultural management can minimize NO3-N leaching, but then the time needed to improve ground water quality is uncertain. A study was conducted in two first-order watersheds (30 and 34 ha) in Iowa's Loess Hills. Both were managed in continuous corn (Zea mays L.) from 1964 through 1995 with similar N fertilizer applications (average 178 kg ha-1 yr-1), except one received applications averaging 446 kg N ha-1 yr-1 between 1969 and 1974. This study determined if NO3-N from these large applications could persist in ground water and baseflow, and affect comparison between new crop rotations implemented in 1996. Piezometer nests were installed and deep cores collected in 1996, then ground water levels and NO3-N concentrations were monitored. Tritium and stable isotopes (2H,18O) were determined on 33 water samples in 2001. Baseflow from the heavily N-fertilized watershed had larger average NO3-N concentrations, by 8 mg L-1. Time-of-travel calculations and tritium data showed ground water resides in these watersheds for decades. \"Bomb-peak\" precipitation (1963-1980) most influenced tritium concentrations near lower slope positions, while deep ground water was dominantly pre-1953 precipitation. Near the stream, greater recharge and mixed-age ground water was suggested by stable isotope and tritium data, respectively. Using sediment-core data collected from the deep unsaturated zone between 1972 and 1996, the increasing depth of a NO3-N pulse was related to cumulative baseflow (r2 = 0.98), suggesting slow downward movement of NO3-N since the first experiment. Management changes implemented in 1996 will take years to fully influence ground water NO3-N. Determining ground water quality responses to new agricultural practices may take decades in some watersheds.

Assessment of Mesotrione Leaching Applied Alone and Mixed in Seven Tropical Soils Columns under Laboratory Conditions

Herbicide leaching is influenced by soil physical and chemical properties as well as the prevailing climatic conditions. However, little is known about leaching of mixture of herbicides in the soil, especially in tropical regions like Brazil. The objective of this study is to evaluate the leaching of 14C-mesotrione (cyclohexane-2-14C-mesotrione) alone and in a mixture with S-metolachlor and terbuthylazine in seven tropical soil columns under laboratory conditions. These soils represented a wide range of properties with varying textures, cation exchange capacity (44 to 154 mmolc kg−1), pH (6.0 to 7.7), organic carbon content (0.58 to 27.32 g kg−1) and clay mineral contents (50 to 605 g kg−1), which are typical of tropical soils. Mesotrione residues were observed across all soil column layers (0–30 cm) in all evaluated soils by simulating 200 mm of water for 48 h. The application of mesotrione, alone or in a mixture, does not influence the leaching of this herbicide. Leaching of mesotrione ranged from low (up 15 cm) to very high (up 30 cm and leachate) in the tropical soils and may pose a potential groundwater contamination risk. In sand and loamy sand soil, the mesotrione was quantified in the leachate at all sampling times as above 80% of the amount initially applied. Thus, mesotrione application without the prior knowledge of the soil physical and chemical properties can result in inefficient weed control on field condition due to high leaching potentials.
