The ability to identify and accurately predict abnormal behavior is important for health monitoring systems in smart environments. Specifically, for elderly persons wishing to maintain their independence and comfort in their living spaces, abnormal behaviors observed during activities of daily living are a good indicator that the person is more likely to have health and behavioral problems that need intervention and assistance. In this paper, we investigate a variety of deep learning models such as Long Short Term Memory (LSTM), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), CNN-LSTM and Autoencoder-CNN-LSTM for identifying and accurately predicting the abnormal behaviors of elderly people. The temporal information and spatial sequences collected over time are used to generate models, which can be fitted to the training data and the fitted model can be used to make a prediction. We present an experimental evaluation of these models performance in identifying and predicting elderly persons abnormal behaviors in smart homes, via extensive testing on two public data sets, taking into account different models architectures and tuning the hyperparameters for each model. The performance evaluation is focused on accuracy measure.

2024
Background
Owing to an increase in life expectancy, it is common for the older adults to suffer from chronic diseases that can result in disability and a low quality of life. This study aimed to explore the influence of chronic diseases and multimorbidities on activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental ADLs (IADLs) in an older Chinese population.
Methods
Based on the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (2018), 9,155 older adults aged 65 years and above were included in the study. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information on demographic characteristics, chronic diseases, ADLs, and IADLs. The impact of factors affecting ADL and IADL impairment in older adults was analysed using binary logistic regression.
Results
In total, 66.3% participants had chronic diseases. Hypertension, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and cerebrovascular disease were among the top chronic diseases. Of these, 33.7% participants had multimorbidities. The most common combination of the two chronic diseases was hypertension and heart disease (11.2%), whereas the most common combination of the three chronic diseases was hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes (3.18%). After categorising the older adults into four age groups, dementia, visual impairment, and hearing impairment were found to be more prevalent with increasing age. The prevalence of hypertension, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, gastrointestinal ulcers, arthritis and chronic nephritis gradually increased with age until the age of 75 years, peaked in the 75–84 years age group, and then showed a decreasing trend with age. Multimorbidity prevalence followed a similar pattern. Regression analysis indicated that the increase in age group and the number of chronic diseases independently correlated with impairments in ADL as well as IADL. Additionally, gender, physical activity, educational background, obesity, depressive symptoms, and falls also had an impact on ADLs or IADLs.
Conclusion
Chronic diseases and multimorbidities are common in older adults, and it is important to note that aging, multimorbidity, obesity, and unhealthy lifestyle choices may interfere with ADLs or IADLs in older adults. Therefore, it is imperative that primary healthcare providers pay special attention to older adults and improve screening for multimorbidity and follow-up needs.

Estimation of a Structural Equation Modeling of Quality of Life Mediated by Difficulty in Daily Life in Survivors of Breast Cancer
2023
Background: The purpose of this study was to clarify the structural relationship of quality of life (QOL) in survivors of breast cancer, including difficulty in daily life and negative experiences in daily activities, as health-related indicators. Methods: Participants were survivors of breast cancer for more than 2 years after primary breast cancer surgery and belonged to self-help groups. The assessment used FACT-B (QOL), HADS (anxiety and depression), SOC (sense of coherence), WHODAS 2.0 (difficulties in daily life), and CAOD (negative experiences in daily activities). Bayesian structural equation modeling (BSEM) was performed to analyze the hypothesized model. If the causal model was significant, multiplication of the path coefficient from emotional distress (anxiety and depression) to QOL, and from SOC to emotional distress, was considered a direct effect on QOL, and from SOC to difficulty in daily life, from difficulty in daily life to negative experiences in daily activities, and from negative experiences in daily activities to anxiety and depression were considered indirect effects on QOL. Results: The participants comprised 73 survivors of breast cancer. The goodness of fit of the model in the BSEM was satisfactory. The direct effect was 0.274, and the indirect effect was 0.164. Conclusions: An additional finding of this study is that coping with difficulty in daily life and negative experiences in daily activities related to QOL may improve QOL.

2016
Objective The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence and pattern of cognitive dysfunction observed in primary Sjögren's syndrome (PSS) and to examine the relationships between cognitive abilities, depression, fatigue, and quality of life. Materials and Methods Thirty‐two subjects with PSS were compared with 19 healthy controls on comprehensive neuropsychological, depression, fatigue, health state, and daily‐life activities tests. Results There was low performance in Clock Drawing, COWAT, Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT), Colorless Word Reading (Stroop1) and Recognizing Colors (Stroop2) Patterns of STROOP test, SDLT, Auditory–Verbal Learning Test (AVLT), immediate and long‐term verbal memory, Benton Judgment of Line Orientation Test (BJLOT), and in all the patterns of RCFT in PSS patients compared to the healthy control group (p < .05). It was observed an increased depression frequency and fatigue severity, impairment in health condition, and a decreased quality of life in PSS cases compared to the healthy controls (p < .05). All the depression, fatigue severity, and quality of life tests showed a significant positive correlation with each other (p < .05). A significant negative correlation between Clock Drawing and SF‐36‐BP (p = .031, r = −.382) and SF‐36‐GH (p = .027, r = −.392) was observed. Conclusions Clock Drawing, PASAT, and AVLT are very useful tests to determine the subclinical and clinical cognitive dysfunction to evaluate attention, information processing speed, executive functions, and short‐term and long‐term verbal memory in PSS patients. Depression and fatigue may not affect the neuropsychological tests performance. Clock drawing, PASAT, and AVLT are very useful tests to determine the subclinical and clinical cognitive dysfunction to evaluate attention, information processing speed, executive functions, and short‐term and long‐term memory in PSS patients.

Introduction. The purpose of this article is to highlight the features of daily life in cities of rearguard during World War II (as exemplified by Alma-Ata), the strategy of survival of people in the extremely difficult war years (1941–1945). Methods and materials. The study of features of daily city life in the extreme wartime from the point of view of the systematic approach is a basis for analytical generalizations and scientific hierarchization of the collected historical material. The system method is inextricably linked with the macro-and micro-approach, the combination of which allows to reveal the general and the particular in the studied processes, both from the point of view of the state-institutional view – “from above” and from the point of view of their ordinary participants and witnesses – “from below”. The micro-level of the research allows to study the problem in different projections: economic, political, socio-cultural one, helps to show the humanitarian dimension of the city daily life in wartime. Using the multifaceted approach to the formation of the research source base, introducing new declassified archival documents into scientific circulation allows to restore the daily life of Alma-Ata during the Great Patriotic War, to approach its objective and multidimensional understanding. As the main group of sources the authors use documents extracted from the archives of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in particular, the Central State Archive of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Almaty) (CSA RK), the National archive of Kazakhstan (Astana) (NA RK). Analysis and Results. The result of the research is a demonstration of the daily life of ordinary citizens who bravely endured all the hardships of war both at work and at home, in the family, helping fellow citizens who were evacuated to the city during the war.
