BSO'S SYMPHONIC PROTEST MUSIC ; `ROCKING THE CRADLE' QUESTIONS WAR IN THE `CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION'; MUSIC PREVIEW
After a quietly ominous start, the first movement of Richard Danielpour's new symphony, Rocking the Cradle, explodes with pounding chords. The movement is called \"Shock and Awe.\" The second movement, alternately reflective and anguished, has an equally strong title: \"In Memory of the Innocent.\" For Danielpour, the \"innocent\" commemorated in the finale of his new work include \"Daniel Pearl, the Iraqi civilian casualties that nobody talks about - anyone innocent. But it's mainly about the [U.S.] soldiers, who do what they are told, and do it with tremendous integrity.\"
AT THE KRAVIS, AN INTRIGUING LOOK AT LIFE
The quartet was unquestionably in sync with [Richard Danielpour]'s musical psychology for the debut performance. The opening phrases suggest slices of light that prompt an awakening, sharply outlined via Kalichstein's aggressive piano handiwork while Robinson's cello creates auburn hues of morning imagery.
String quartet to play a compelling mix ; Danielpour, Beethoven, Brahms pieces featured; PREVIEW; Howard Live; Arts and entertainment in Howard County
The American String Quartet, formed in 1974, has won critical acclaim for its performances of the classical string quartet repertoire and for its collaborations with distinguished contemporary composers. Sunday's program by quartet members Daniel Avshalomov (viola), Margo Tatgenhorst Drakos (cello), Peter Winograd and Laurie Carney (violins) will feature an early Beethoven quartet (Op. 18, No. 5), Richard Danielpour's Quartet No. 2, and [Brahms]' Op. 51, No. 1 quartet. The Beethoven is a substantial opening work, sounding much closer to Mozart's quartets than to the quartets Beethoven composed later in his life. Throughout his first set of six quartets, published in 1801, Beethoven pays homage to Mozart's quartet writing, yet his distinctive fingerprints are abundantly audible in the short motives that generate movements, the dynamic range, the unexpected rhythmic accents and the adventurous harmonies.

STRING QUARTET DELIVERS THE GOODS THE GROUP DIDN'T STINT WITH ITS SPIRITED, EXPRESSIVE PLAYING EVEN THOUGH THE ROLLINS HALL WAS LESS THAN PACKED
Not the sort you'd tell around the campfire, though. The first movement is a fantasy after the opera La Boheme: Rodolfo, left alone by Mimi's death at the opera's close, has a dream in which Mimi beckons to him from the beyond. The third movement, [Richard Danielpour] said, relates to his grandmother, who shortly before she died claimed that her deceased husband had been communicating with her. The finale evokes a pet monkey that belonged to the legendary Florida architect Addison Mizner, who was so devoted to the creature that he built a memorial to it in Palm Beach.
