Daring The Devil On Wheels
Sample overkill sentences, plucked from among many: \"He always lived as if his pants were on fire\"; \"He was Harold Hill, the Music Man, discovering trouble right here in River City\"; \"He walked with the home-run hitters now.\" Knievel got his stage name, the author suggests, when he was tossed in jail (he was a juvenile delinquent, and a prolific thief) with a troubled man named William Knofel, whom the cops had nicknamed Awful.
BOOK REVIEW; A peek at Knievel's 'Evel' ways; Leigh Montville logs the daredevil's bold feats, spectacular failures and the wildly colorful life in between
In the 1970s, Knievel, the motorcycle daredevil clad in a white jumpsuit, flew over cars and buses and canyons (well, he had issues with the canyons) and became a branded entity on ABC's \"Wide World of Sports,\" on which he would appear 17 times in 10 years, and draw the highest ratings in the show's history (some 55 million viewers) when he jumped over 14 Greyhound buses at the Kings Island Amusement Park near Cincinnati in 1975. According to Hamilton's own autobiography, quoted here, Knievel, angered by what he'd been told was a critical portrayal of him, summoned Hamilton to his Hollywood motel and ordered the actor to read the script at gunpoint.
