The Pervasive Force of Music in African, Caribbean, and African American Drama
Olaniyan, who calls Soyinka's play \"the most powerful evocations in contemporary African drama of a classical African ritualistic sense of space\" (52), reminds us of Soyinka's exhortation that the play Death and the King's Horseman \"can be fully realized only through an evocation of music from the abyss of transition\" (author's note). Playwright and Obie winner Paul Carter Harrison strives to mimic the style of pianist Thelonious Monk in his writing: \"IJfI could create the tension, the space, the rhythmic sensibility of Thelnious Monk in a play I will have achieved the fullest possible accomplishment in theater\" (Interview).

Cultural Dialogics and Jazz: A White Historian Signifies

An essay discusses research by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. on Signifyin(g) and the practice's place in jazz. In informal black discourse, Signifyin(g) connotes a variety of ways of speaking and interacting that are characterized by irony, indirection, needling, and trickery. In approaching a most compelling variety of African-American music, writings about jazz have mainly reproduced the gestures of a white, European-American musicology. Like the canon of European music, the jazz canon is a strategy for exclusion. If, as Gates has suggested, the jazz tradition is essentially a Signifyin(g) tradition, it is also true that much of the jazz musician's Signification has played on musical works and styles from outside the jazz critics' mainstream. Jazz Signification is largely extra-canonic. An examination of reaction to Miles Davis' fusion jazz, which was outside the European canons of jazz, is included.

Essential parallels between John Coltrane's enigmatic diagram of 1960 and several ancient cyclic music theories of China are proposed, by relating musical constructs with cross-cultural concepts. The author attempts to realign jazz perception of John Coltrane's modal periods of the 1960s with ancient Chinese musical theoretical constructs. The article includes charts and musical examples.
