The impact of sleep quality on emotion regulation difficulties in adolescents: a chained mediation model involving daytime dysfunction, social exclusion, and self-control

Objective
Previous studies have revealed associations between sleep quality and mental health, yet the comprehensive role of sleep quality, daytime dysfunction, social exclusion, and self-control in difficulties with emotion regulation remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate how sleep quality affects emotion regulation difficulties among middle school students through pathways involving daytime dysfunction, social exclusion, and self-control, thereby providing a more comprehensive theoretical basis for mental health interventions.
Methods
Utilizing the pittsburgh sleep quality index, the adolescent social exclusion scale, the brief self-control scale, and emotion regulation scale-short form, we assessed 1067 students randomly selected from four middle schools from October to November 2023. After the removal of extreme values (those exceeding 3 standard deviations), 806 students were retained for data analysis.

Our findings indicate that poor sleep quality significantly contributes to increased daytime dysfunction(

Waking to use technology at night, and associations with driving and work outcomes: a screenshot of Australian adults

Abstract
The use of smartphones/electronic devices and their relationship with outcomes are understudied in adult populations. We determined daytime functional correlates of using technology during the night in a population sample of Australian adults. A cross-sectional, national online survey of sleep health was conducted in 2019 (n = 1984, 18–90 years). Nocturnal technology use was assessed with: “In the past seven days, how often did you wake or were woken to send or receive text messages, emails or other electronic communications?” Waking to use technology during all/most nights was reported by 4.9%, with 13.8% reporting two to three nights per week, and 12.7% reporting just one night per week. Technology users were more likely to be younger, employed, experience financial stress, and speak English as a second language. In adjusted analyses, compared to no use, technology use at least two to three nights per week was significantly associated with daytime problems (sleepiness, fatigue and impaired mood, motivation, and attention) and was more evident in participants not reporting/perceiving a sleep problem. Technology use was independently associated with at least one drowsy driving-related motor vehicle accidents/near miss per month (odds ratio [OR] = 6.4, 95% CI = 3.8 to 10.7) and with missing work (OR = 4.8, 95% CI: 3.2 to 7.2) and making errors at work (OR = 2.2, 95% CI = 1.5 to 3.3) at least 1 day in the past 3 months due to sleepiness/sleep problem. These associations were not significantly modified by age. Public health implications of waking to engage with electronic devices at night may be significant in terms of safety, productivity, and well-being. Limiting sleep-disrupting technology use will require innovative language-diverse strategies targeted broadly across age groups.

(1) Examine performance on an objective measure of reward-related cognitive impulsivity (delay discounting) among self-reported habitual short sleepers and medium (i.e. recommended 7-9 hours) length sleepers either reporting or not reporting daytime dysfunction; (2) Inform the debate regarding what type and duration of short sleep (e.g. 21 to 24 hours of total sleep deprivation, self-reported habitual short sleep duration) meaningfully influences cognitive impulsivity; (3) Compare the predictive utility of sleep duration and perceived dysfunction to other factors previously shown to influence cognitive impulsivity via delay discounting performance (age, income, education, and fluid intelligence).
We analyzed data from 1190 adults from the Human Connectome Project database. Participants were grouped on whether they reported habitual short (≤6 hours) vs. medium length (7-9 hours) sleep duration and whether they perceived daytime dysfunction using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.
All short sleepers exhibited increased delay discounting compared to all medium length sleepers, regardless of perceived dysfunction. Of the variables examined, self-reported sleep duration was the strongest predictor of delay discounting behavior between groups and across all 1190 participants.
Individuals who report habitual short sleep are likely to exhibit increased reward-related cognitive impulsivity regardless of perceived sleep-related daytime impairment. Therefore, there is a reason to suspect that these individuals exhibit more daytime dysfunction, in the form of reward-related cognitive impulsivity, than they may assume. Current findings suggest that assessment of sleep duration over the prior month has meaningful predictive utility for human reward-related impulsivity.

Background
The aims of this study were 1) to clarify the prevalence of sleep problems (insomnia, insufficient sleep, and delayed sleep-wake phase) among Japanese university students; 2) to examine sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, and sleep-related symptoms in each sleep problem; and 3) to evaluate the association between the above-mentioned sleep problems and daytime dysfunction in school life.
Methods
Self-report questionnaire surveys were conducted at eight universities in Japan, and we received 1034 valid answers (78% female). The questionnaire consisted of socio-demographic characteristics, information on lifestyle, sleep pattern, sleep-related symptoms, and daytime dysfunction in school life. Groups with insomnia, behaviorally induced insufficient sleep syndrome (BIISS), delayed sleep-wake phase (DSWP), and BIISS + DSWP were defined. To identify the association between sleep problems and daytime dysfunction in school life, the generalized linear mixed effect model was conducted.
Results
Sleep duration on weekdays was 5.9 ± 1.2 h, and 38.2% of the students had a sleep duration < 6.0 h. About 16% of the students were categorized as evening-type individuals. More than half of the students (56.1%) had excessive daytime sleepiness. Insomnia was associated with tardiness (aOR: 0.8, 95%CI: 0.7–0.9) and falling asleep during class (aOR: 1.6: 95%CI: 1.4–2.0). BIISS was associated with tardiness (aOR: 1.5, 95%CI: 1.1–2.2) and interference with academic achievement (aOR: 1.9, 95%CI: 1.3–2.6). DSWP and BIISS + DSWP were associated with absence (aOR: 3.4, 95%CI: 2.2–5.1 / aOR: 4.2, 95%CI: 3.2–5.6), tardiness (aOR: 2.7, 95%CI: 1.8–4.1 / aOR: 2.2, 95%CI: 1.6–2.8), falling asleep during class (aOR: 2.6, 95%CI: 1.4–4.8 / aOR: 7.6, 95%CI: 3.3–17.2), and interference with academic achievement (aOR: 2.6, 95%CI: 1.7–3.9 / aOR: 2.1, 95%CI: 1.6–2.8).
Conclusions
Students with DSWP and BIISS + DSWP were significantly associated with daytime dysfunction in school life, i.e. absence, tardiness, falling asleep during class and interference with academic achievement. Students displaying BIISS + DSWP were considered to have a relatively more serious condition compared with those with only insomnia, DSWP, or BIISS. It is therefore of utmost importance that university students aim to prevent DSWP and BIISS which were associated with daytime function in school life.

Sleep disorders are more common in diabetes mellitus (DM) cases rather than normal ones. In addition, this condition could be associated with diabetic retinopathy (DR) development with more inflammatory indices in circulation. In the present study, we have evaluated the association between DR and sleep quality. This cross-sectional study is a part of the second phase of the study of the elderly cohort of Amirkola City, which was conducted in 2015-2016 on all people aged 60 and higher. Of all diabetic cases, 44 cases had retinopathy and were selected as the case group. To compare two control groups, 135 diabetic patients without retinopathy and 135 people without diabetes were randomly selected. The presence and type of retinopathy were determined based on an eye physical examination by an ophthalmologist. In addition, sleep quality was evaluated based on the Pittsburgh Questionnaire. The obtained data were analyzed by ANOVA, t-test, and linear regression tests. In the present study, there was a significant difference in the score of the Pittsburgh questionnaire between people with DR (45.5±68.2) compared to diabetic people without retinopathy (76.5±48.2) and people without diabetes (95.4±36.2) (P=0.470), but diabetic people without retinopathy had significantly worse sleep quality than people without diabetes (P=0.019). Also, sleep quality in women with DR was worse than in men (P=014). In the linear regression analysis, it was observed that age, gender, diabetes, and history of depression significantly affect the sleep quality of the evaluated cases (P<0.05 for all). According to the results of the present study, DR does not negatively influence the quality of sleep, and DR is not related to sleep disorders.

The Concomitant Pattern of Association Between Subjective Global Sleep Quality and Daytime Dysfunction in Hypnotic-Treated Older Adults: The Yilan Study, Taiwan

The relationship between improvements in subjective sleep quality and restoration of daytime function remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the concomitant pattern between subjective sleep quality and daytime dysfunction in hypnotic-treated older adults.
This was a community-based, cross-sectional study. Participants comprised community-dwelling adults aged ≥ 65 years. Individual items from the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were adopted to evaluate subjective global sleep quality and daytime dysfunction. Daytime dysfunction included composite scores of daytime dysfunction in the PSQI and its two sub-components: \"staying awake\" and \"maintaining enthusiasm.\" Based on hypnotic use and status in subjective sleep quality, participants were categorized into four groups: \"healthy control,\" \"treated with good sleep quality (T+GSQ),\" \"treated with poor sleep quality (T+PSQ),\" and \"not treated with poor sleep quality (NT+PSQ)\". The associations between these four groups and daytime dysfunction were analyzed using logistic regression.
In total, 2622 individuals participated in the study. After controlling for covariates, the T+PSQ group was more likely to have daytime dysfunction, including \"composite daytime dysfunction\" (OR: 6.41; 95% CI: 3.90-10.55), \"poor at staying awake\" (OR: 3.04; 95% CI: 1.45-6.37), and \"poor at maintaining enthusiasm\" (OR: 7.42; 95% CI: 4.33-12.70) compared to the T+GSQ group. However, the healthy control group was less likely than the T+GSQ group to present with daytime dysfunction, including \"composite daytime dysfunction\" (OR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.26-0.72) and \"poor at maintaining enthusiasm\" (OR: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.22-0.68).
Subjective sleep quality attributed to hypnotic use did not necessarily indicate restoration of daytime dysfunction.

Daytime dysfunction may be associated with postoperative delirium in patients undergoing total hip/knee replacement: The PNDABLE study

PurposePostoperative delirium (POD) is a usual complication after total hip/knee replacement, which may be affected by sleep characteristics. However, up to now, preoperative sleep characteristics have not been evaluated as risk factors of POD. The relationship between self-reported sleep characteristics and POD in patients has been investigated in this study.Patients and MethodsWe recruited 495 cognitively intact individuals in the final analysis from the Perioperative Neurocognitive Disorder and Biomarker Lifestyle study. Sleep characteristics were tested by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Mini-mental state examination was applied to assess preoperative mental status of patients. Postoperatively, we used confusion assessment method and memorial delirium assessment scale to evaluate the incidence of POD and POD severity, respectively. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of T-tau, P-tau, Aβ40, and Aβ42 were detected by enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay before the operation. Logistic regression, multiple linear regression, and mediation effects were performed to analyze the relationship between self-reported sleep characteristics and POD.ResultsPOD was detected in 11.31% (56/495) of the patients, with logistic regression analysis showing that daytime dysfunction, P-tau, and T-tau were risk factors of POD, and Aβ42 was a protective factor of POD. Multiple linear regression analysis confirmed that daytime dysfunction was positively correlated with P-tau in patients with POD. Meanwhile, compared to the patients with no postoperative delirium, the CSF levels of P- and T-tau were higher in patients with POD. Furthermore, mediation analysis showed that it was probable that daytime dysfunction mediated POD through P-tau (proportion: 12.90%) partially.ConclusionDaytime dysfunction is a risk factor of POD preoperatively. To sum up, CSF P-tau protein might partially mediate the influence of daytime dysfunction on POD.Clinical trial registrationThis study was registered at Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2000033439).

Dietary Patterns and Insomnia Symptoms in Chinese Adults: The China Kadoorie Biobank
Limited attention has been paid to the effect of dietary patterns on sleep problems. In the present study, we analyzed the cross-sectional data of 481,242 adults aged 30–79 years from the China Kadoorie Biobank. A laptop-based questionnaire was administered to collect information on food intakes and insomnia symptoms. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios of each insomnia symptom according to quartiles of each dietary pattern, with adjustment for potential confounders. Two major dietary patterns were derived by factor analysis. The traditional northern dietary pattern was characterized by high intakes of wheat and other staple food, whereas the modern dietary pattern was characterized by high intakes of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, fresh fruit, and dairy products. Both dietary patterns were associated with a decreased prevalence of insomnia symptoms (p for trend < 0.001); after adjustment for potential confounders, individuals who had the highest quartile score of traditional northern dietary pattern were 12%–19% less likely to have insomnia symptoms compared to those in the lowest quartile (odds ratio: 0.81–0.88), and the corresponding values for the modern dietary pattern were 0.89–1.01. Furthermore, interactions of these two dietary patterns on insomnia symptoms were observed. Further prospective studies are needed to elucidate the relationship between diet and insomnia.

Daytime Dysfunction: Symptoms Associated with Nervous System Disorders Mediated by SIRT1

Daytime dysfunction, including symptoms like sleepiness, poor memory, and reduced responsiveness, is not well researched. It is crucial to develop animal models and study the biological mechanisms involved. We simulated sleep disorders through sleep deprivation, and stressful stimuli were used to establish daytime functional animal models. We used tests like the sodium pentobarbital sleep synergy test and the DSI telemetry system to measure sleep duration and structure. We also used tests like the Morris water maze, open field test, grip test, and baton twirling test to assess mental and physical fatigue. To assess the intrinsic biological mechanisms, we measured sleep–wake-related neurotransmitters and related receptor proteins, circadian rhythm-related proteins and cognition-related proteins in hypothalamus tissue, and oxidative stress, inflammatory factors, S100β, and HPA axis-related indexes in serum. Multi-factor sleep deprivation resulted in the disruption of sleep–wakefulness structure, memory–cognitive function degradation, decreased grip coordination, and other manifestations of decreased energetic and physical strength. The intrinsic biological mechanisms were related to the disturbed expression of sleep–wake, circadian rhythm, memory–cognition-related proteins, as well as the significant elevation of inflammatory factors, oxidative stress, the HPA axis, and other related indicators. Intrinsically related biological mechanisms and reduced sirt1 expression can lead to disruption of circadian rhythms; resulting in disruption of their sleep–wake-related neurotransmitter content and receptor expression. Meanwhile, the reduced expression of sirt1 also resulted in reduced expression of synapse-associated proteins. This study prepared an animal model of daytime dysfunction by means of multi-factor sleep deprivation. With sirt1 as a core target, the relevant biological mechanisms of neurological disorders were modulated.

Associations between Insomnia Symptoms and Anxiety Symptoms in Adults in a Community Sample of Southeastern Pennsylvania, USA

Although insomnia is reliably associated with anxiety symptoms, aspects of insomnia may differentially relate to one anxiety symptom versus another. Therefore, treatment for insomnia comorbidity with anxiety might be individually tailored to optimize treatment response. Working from this hypothesis, we analyzed data from a survey of 1007 community-dwelling adults. Insomnia was measured using the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), categorizing items as nighttime disturbances, daytime dysfunction, or self-perceived dissatisfaction. Anxiety symptoms were measured with the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item questionnaire (GAD-7). Linear and binomial logistic regression were used and adjusted for covariates. Post hoc forward stepwise analyses determined which components of the insomnia contributed to individual anxiety symptoms. Significant associations between nighttime disturbance (β = 0.88 [0.44, 1.3]), daytime dysfunction (β = 1.30 [0.81, 1.80]), dissatisfaction (β = 1.20 [0.60, 1.7]) and total GAD-7 score were maintained after adjusting for covariates. Nighttime disturbance was associated with excess worrying, restlessness, irritability, and fear of catastrophe. Daytime dysfunction was associated with all symptoms except for fear of catastrophe, and self-perceived dissatisfaction was associated with all symptoms except irritability. Stepwise analyses revealed that daytime dysfunction and dissatisfaction were most consistently related to anxiety symptoms. Greater attention should be paid to daytime dysfunction in patients with insomnia and anxiety, as improving daytime functioning may improve anxiety.
