James Panero touches upon challenges facing the modern realist painter to attend to the spiritual and unseen in ways that seem true, and applauds the painter Amy Lincoln, who incorporates an outsider artist sensibility for symmetry, overgrowth and oversaturated color in a selection of smaller acrylics on display at the Morgan Lehman Gallery in Chelsea. He also considers Paul Reiska's solo show at Lori Bookstein, the eighth such in a career spanning eight decades, and touches on the exhibition titled \"Tilts and Pinwheels,\" by Dutch artist Rob de Oude, who uses grids and intersections in his oil paintings to produce remarkable optical effects, before finally evaluating the work of Thornton Willis, an original Soho abstractionist whose compositions can appear simple, but are engaging and sophisticated.
