Vintage sawmill regains its buzz
2007
The 97-year-old Belsaw portable mill with its round 48-inch saw was silent behind [Dennis Swanson]. It sat beneath a cedar tree, looking much like he found it on the eastern shore of Lake Meridian in Kent after he pulled off enough of the blackberry vines that covered it. With his sawmill, Swanson has built a large storage building on his property and made barn boards for neighbors. When the White River Valley Museum needed to repair the 1897 barn at its Mary Olson Farm, Swanson donated wood and time, producing several hundred board feet. He was delighted that the cut marks of his saw matched the size of those on the existing barn boards. After five years, his wife, Joann, grew tired of the constant attention to the mill. Swanson thought she was jealous. Finally he knew the time had come: it was the Belsaw or Joann.

Dennis Swanson: Man With the Midas Touch
2012
Dennis Swanson is a member of broadcasting's old guard. He's a bear of a man, an intimidating-looking former Marine, and when he speaks, it's to the point. Swanson has been president for Fox Television Stations since 2005, but he's been in broadcasting for his entire 45-year career. He has held top jobs at all four major broadcast networks- ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. Swanson comes from a solid news background, having worked in television news since graduating from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, in 1966 with a master's degree. In between getting his undergraduate and graduate degrees, Swanson spent two years as a captain in the US Marine Corps. By 1983, he returned to Chicago to run ABC'S WLS. While there, he discovered a young African-American woman who seemed to have a real affinity for the camera.

Downtown shops happy with holidays

Swanson, Dennis
2006
At that time, we were worried, said [Dennis Swanson], who with wife Sherri also owns a seasonal Christmas-related store downtown. But in the fourth quarter, we bounced back. Overall, it was a very positive holiday season. Rachael Snedecor used the words swamped and out of control to describe the downtown scene over the past month. As executive director of Livermore Downtown Inc., she said she has heard plenty of positive stories from merchants. Some of these same merchants had reported slow sales earlier in the year amid intense construction activity. The main part of the so-called streetscape project involved narrowing First Street to one lane in each direction between Maple Street/Railroad Avenue and L Street. Diagonal parking spaces were added along the roadway. In coming months, the expanded sidewalks are expected to feature outdoor dining, street vendors, and art displays.
