Public management as a design-oriented professional discipline
\"What, fundamentally, is public management? This question is rarely answered clearly and confidently, whether by students of public management or academics in the field. Effects of infusing the engineering design process into STEM project-based learning to develop preservice technology teachers’ engineering design thinking
BackgroundThis study focuses on probing preservice technology teachers’ cognitive structures and how they construct engineering design in technology-learning activities and explores the effects of infusing an engineering design process into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) project-based learning to develop preservice technology teachers’ cognitive structures for engineering design thinking.ResultsThe study employed a quasi-experimental design, and twenty-eight preservice technology teachers participated in the teaching experiment. The flow-map method and metalistening technique were utilized to enable preservice technology teachers to create flow maps of engineering design, and a chi-square test was employed to analyze the data. The results suggest that (1) applying the engineering design process to STEM project-based learning is beneficial for developing preservice technology teachers’ schema of design thinking, especially with respect to clarifying the problem, generating ideas, modeling, and feasibility analysis, and (2) it is important to encourage teachers to further explore the systematic concepts of engineering design thinking and expand their abilities by merging the engineering design process into STEM project-based learning.ConclusionsThe findings of this study provide initial evidence on the effects of infusing the engineering design process into STEM project-based learning to develop preservice technology teachers’ engineering design thinking. However, further work should focus on exploring how to overcome the weaknesses of preservice technology teachers’ engineering design thinking by adding a few elements of engineering design thinking pedagogy, e.g., designing learning activities that are relevant to real life.

Design thinking as an effective method for problem-setting and needfinding for entrepreneurial teams addressing wicked problems
Organizations in a wide array of fields and disciplines are increasingly using design thinking as an innovative process to create products or services that address wicked problems in their industries. Design thinking, a method of creative and collaborative problem solving originating in the tactics of designers, is a product design and development process that is, more and more, being used as a tool to move innovation forward and structure creation processes in diverse disciplines, from product development to food creation to social science research. Increasingly design thinking has become popular beyond the confines of creative and design disciplines and into the realm of wicked problems in social and ecological systems. While design thinking has many forms and applications, this study uses a refined version built upon the key themes of inspiration, ideation, and implementation as defined by Tim Brown, CEO of IDEO (2009), and situates it within the social science discipline—namely, systems thinking, organizational learning, and action research. Through a distilled design structure this flexible methodology combines insights from organizational development, social psychology, systems theory, and design research. By embedding learning and reflective practices into the structure of design thinking, a hybrid model of design thinking emerges that is a more effective tool for framing, setting in context, and solving these types of problems within teams.
Effectiveness of artificial intelligence integration in design-based learning on design thinking mindset, creative and reflective thinking skills: An experimental study
Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into learning activities is an essential opportunity to develop students' varied thinking skills. On the other hand, design-based learning (DBL) can more effectively foster creative design processes with AI technologies to overcome real-world challenges. In this context, AI-supported DBL activities have a significant potential for teaching and developing thinking skills. However, there is a lack of experimental interventions in the literature examining the effects of integrating AI into learner-centered methods on active engagement and thinking skills. The current study aims to explore the effectiveness of AI integration as a guidance and collaboration tool in a DBL process. In this context, the effect of the experimental application on the participants’ design thinking mindset, creative self-efficacy (CSE), and reflective thinking (RT) self-efficacy levels and the relationship between them were examined. The participants used ChatGPT and Midjourney in the digital story development process as part of the experimental treatment. The only difference between the control and experimental groups in the digital storytelling process is the AI applications used in the experimental treatment (ChatGPT and Midjourney). In this quasi-experimental method study, participants were randomly assigned to treatment, an AI integration intervention, at the departmental level. 87 participants (undergraduate students) in the experimental group and 99 (undergraduate students) in the control group. The implementation process lasted five weeks. Partial Least Squares (PLS), Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), and Multi-Group Analysis (MGA) were made according to the measurements made at the T0 point before the experiment and at the T1 point after the experiment. According to the research result, the intervention in both groups contributed to the creative self-efficacy, critical reflection, and reflection development of the participants. On the other hand, the design thinking mindset levels of both groups did not show a significant difference in the comparison of the T0 point and the T1 point.
Innovation in the Era of IoT and Industry 5.0: Absolute Innovation Management (AIM) Framework
In the modern business environment, characterized by rapid technological advancements and globalization, abetted by IoT and Industry 5.0 phenomenon, innovation is indispensable for competitive advantage and economic growth. However, many organizations are facing problems in its true implementation due to the absence of a practical innovation management framework, which has made the implementation of the concept elusive instead of persuasive. The present study has proposed a new innovation management framework labeled as “Absolute Innovation Management (AIM)” to make innovation more understandable, implementable, and part of the organization’s everyday routine by synergizing the innovation ecosystem, design thinking, and corporate strategy to achieve competitive advantage and economic growth. The current study used an integrative literature review methodology to develop the “Absolute Innovation Management” framework. The absolute innovation management framework links the innovation ecosystem with the corporate strategy of the firm by adopting innovation management as a strategy through design thinking. Thus, making innovation more user/human-centered that is desirable by the customer, viable for business and technically feasible, creating both entrepreneurial and customer value, and boosting corporate venturing and corporate entrepreneurship to achieve competitive advantage and economic growth while addressing the needs of IoT and Industry 5.0 era. In sum, it synergizes innovation, design thinking, and strategy to make businesses future-ready for IoT and industry 5.0 revolution. The present study is significant, as it not only make considerable contributions to the existing literature on innovation management by developing a new framework but also makes the concept more practical, implementable and part of an organization’s everyday routine.

A conceptual model for educating design thinking dispositions
Design thinking dispositions are essential for students to understand why design thinking knowledge should be applied to perform specific tasks. However, few studies are focused on teaching design thinking dispositions. This study proposes a conceptual model that supports teaching design thinking dispositions to address this gap. The model was instantiated in an undergraduate course. Students’ reflections about the course were collected to evaluate the model. The use of the model is also demonstrated by considering different teaching scenarios. This study contributes to better teaching and learning design thinking dispositions based on a unique model that helps educators organize their design thinking courses. The study also derives some implications for educators. While teaching design thinking knowledge and skills is essential, developing students’ design thinking dispositions is equally essential.
