Influence of the mix proportion and aggregate features on the performance of eco-efficient fine recycled concrete aggregate mixtures
Most of the previous research on recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) has focused on coarse RCA (CRCA), while much less has been accomplished on the use of fine RCA particles (FRCA). Furthermore, most RCA research disregards its unique microstructure, and thus the inferior performance of concrete incorporating RCA is often reported in the fresh and hardened states. To improve the overall behaviour of RCA concrete advanced mix design techniques such as equivalent volume (EV) or particle packing models (PPMs) may be used. However, the efficiency of these procedures to proportion eco-efficient FRCA concrete still requires further investigation. This work evaluates the overall fresh (i.e., slump and rheological characterization) and hardened states (i.e., non-destructive tests, compressive strength and microscopy) performance of sustainable FRCA mixtures proportioned through distinct techniques (i.e., direct replacement, EV and PPMs) and incorporating different types of aggregates (i.e., natural and manufactured sand) and manufacturing processes (i.e., crusher fines and fully ground). Results demonstrate that the aggregate type and crushing process may influence the FRCA particles’ features. Yet, the use of advanced mix design techniques, particularly PPMs, may provide FRCA mixes with quite suitable performance in the fresh (i.e., 49% lower yield stress) and hardened states (i.e., 53% higher compressive strength) along with a low carbon footprint.

Exploring humorous design techniques in product through incongruity-resolution theory
The incongruity-resolution model plays a key role in the cognitive mechanisms of perceived humour. This study employed the incongruity-resolution model to discuss humorous design techniques to help design novices and students understand the influence of various humorous design techniques on perceived humour. First, 260 humorous products currently on the market were randomly collected. Subsequently, two focus group interviews were conducted, in which 10 postgraduate students from various majors and 6 design postgraduate students compiled, categorized, and discussed techniques to design humorous products. Next, questionnaires were distributed and 336 valid responses of young adults were obtained. The results revealed that humorous design techniques can be assigned into the following categories: implication, scenario, causality, displacement, opposite meaning, unrelatedness, exaggeration, and optical illusion. Furthermore, resolution plays a mediating role in the relationship between incongruity and perceived humour in humorous products; incongruity has no direct explanatory power for perceived humour and can only exert humorous effects through resolution. Finally, the findings of this research regarding humorous design techniques and perceived humour are discussed. The results and measurement tools provide guidance for novices in and students of design to create humorous products and offer practical strategies to enhance perceived humour in their products.

Applying persuasive techniques in an online learning environment: A mixed-method study
Persuasion is inherent to the instructional process. Instructions delivered through online programs do not always generate expected and consistent learning outcomes, and hence persuasion in online instructional design is even more critical. Through this mixed-method study, we aim to identify the most widely used persuasive design techniques, the challenges limiting their applications, and their implications. Furthermore, this paper discusses the recommendations of new persuasive techniques put forth by Instructional Designers.

Influence of Motivational Design Techniques on Use and Acceptance of Self-Management Health Systems in Older Adults
INTRODUCTION: Self-Management Health Systems (SMHS) are envisioned to support older adults and contribute to ageing in place. To promote the use and acceptance of SMHS, designers may resort to using motivational design techniques (MDT).OBJECTIVES: This paper investigates how and which older adults prefer MDT in SMHS and whether these preferences are mediated by either motivation for health management (MHM) or mobile device proficiency (MDP).METHODS: Based on a user evaluation with 45 older adults (mean age=84, SD=6.75), 32 MDT, MHM, and MDP were polled through questionnaires and informal interviews.RESULTS: Findings showed that most techniques were welcomed, but also that scores vary widely, reflecting heterogeneity in the population and calling for caution in its implementation. These findings are then translated into implications for design.CONCLUSION: Overall, older adults welcome MDT in SMHS. However, MDT are no panacea; tailoring MDT to users’ needs is therefore crucial.
